I could feel her chest shaking as she tried not to cry but failed. For all of my twenty-four years, my mom had been supportive. Strength and protection had always flowed from her to me. Now I knew it would have to flow the other way. Mom didn’t stay down for long. After the shock of breast-cancer, she armed herself with a notebook and a pen and a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell counts and medications(药物) with long names as though she were studying for entrance exams into medical school.” The not-knowing is the worst.” she said. The operation was successful. The chemo(化疗)was the harder part. I went with Mom to every chemo treatment. She rarely complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and fingernails fell out one by one. She joked that she could save money on nail polish and put it toward the doctor bills, even though she never wore nail polish.” Cancer can take my hair, my nails, my health, my very life. But it can’t take my smile.” Mom said. Mom learned to share her fears with me, and it formed an even deeper bond between us. Yet I am certain there were fears she didn’t share because she was still protecting me--worries she only shared with Dad. Even in the darkest hours, she would just joke about the cancer. Mom always said,” When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it, you take away some of its power.” Mom was one of the lucky ones. She did beat her cancer, though not without scars. From her, I’ve learned I may not get to choose what I face, but I do get to choose how I face it. 24. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean? A. There were other ways to treat cancer. B. Knowledge of cancer would be helpful. C. Mom had to stay stronger to beat cancer. D. I should be the one being there for Mom. 25. Which of the following words can best describe Mom? A. Humorous and generous. B. Considerate and ambitious. C. Optimistic and determined. D. Caring and knowledgeable. 26. What is the fifth paragraph mainly about? A. The fear Mom shared with me. B. The ways Mom faced fear. C. The jokes Mom told me. D. The bond Mom and I formed. 27. What lesson did the author learn from Mom? A. Luck counts in beating diseases. B. Complaint does no good to one’s health. C. Positive attitudes get one through hardship. D. Sharing feelings helps reduce sufferings a lot. C A walk through the galleries of Quebec's Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) places individuals face-to-face with some 43,000 artworks ranging from Chinese ceramics (陶瓷制品) to Inuit sculpture. While the visiting is an incredible cultural experience, a group of local physicians will soon be able to prescribe(开处方) museum visits as treatment for some illnesses. Hélène Boyer, vice president of a Montreal-based medical association, explains that museum visits have been shown to increase levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter (神经传导物质) known as the "happy chemical" which helps to lift mood. According to Boyer, the small increase in hormones(荷尔蒙)associated with enjoying an afternoon of art is similar to that offered by exercise, making museum prescriptions ideal for the elderly experiencing pain that prevents them from regularly joining in physical activity. The museum visits are designed to improve traditional methods. As Bondil notes, spending time in a peaceful environment can provide a welcome distraction. "What is most important is this experience can help them escape from their own pain," she says. "When you enter the museum, you escape from the speed of our daily life." "I am convinced that in the 21st century, culture will be what physical activity was for health in the 20th century," said Bondil. " Some people would do well to recall that just in the 19th century, sports were believed to do harm to the body. Just as doctors now prescribe exercise, they will be able to prescribe a visit to the MMFA." 28. What does Hélène Boyer think of museum visits? A. They can cheer people up. B. They can reduce physical activity. C. They can slow down our life pace. D. They can increase levels of art appreciation. 29. How do museum visits affect people? A. Stop them concentrating on pain. B. Stop them focusing on traditional methods. C. Encourage them not to be absent-minded. D. Encourage them to slow their steps while walking. 30. What does the last paragraph suggest? A. Physical activities were popular in the 19th century. B. Sports are considered to be harmful to the body. C. Ideas of treating illnesses are changing over time. D. Doctors prescribe museum visits regularly now. 31. What is the main idea of the text? A. Museum visits are ideal for the elderly. B. Happy chemical helps to lift mood. C. Peaceful environment helps escape pain. D. Cultural activities will promote health D People aren't walking any more—if they can figure out a way to avoid it. I felt superior about this matter until the other day I took my car to mail a small parcel. The journey is a matter of 281 steps. But I used the car. And I wasn't in any hurry, either. I had merely become one more victim of a national sickness: motorosis. It is an illness to which I had thought myself immune(免疫的), for I was born in the tradition of going to places on my own two legs. At that time, we regarded 25 miles as good day's walk and the ability to cover such a distance in ten hours as a sign of strength and skill. A wellknown British physician, Sir Adolphe Abrhams, pointed out recently that hearts and bodies need proper exercise. A person who avoids exercise is more likely to have illnesses than one who exercises regularly and walking is an ideal form of exercise---the most familiar and natural of all. It was Henry Thoreau who showed mankind the richness of going on foot. The man walking can learn the trees, flowers, insects, birds and animals, the significance of seasons, the very feel of himself as a living creature in a living world. He can’t learn in a car. The car is a convenient means of transport, but we have made it our way of life. Many people don't dare to approach Nature any more. To them the world they were born to enjoy is all threat; to them security is a steel river thundering on a concrete road. And much of their thinking takes place while waiting for the traffic light to turn green. I say that the green of forests is the mind's best light. And none but the man on foot can evaluate what is basic and everlasting. 32. What is the national sickness? A. Walking too much. B. Travelling too much. C. Driving cars too much. D. Climbing stairs too much. 33. What was life like when the author was young? A. People usually went around on foot. B. People often walked 25 miles a day. C. People used to walk ten hours every day. D. People considered a tenhour walk as a hardship. 34. What is compared to “a steel river” in Paragraph 5? A. A queue of cars. B. A ray of traffic light. C. A flash of lightning. D. A stream of people. 35. What is the author's intention of writing this passage? A. To tell people to reflect more on life. B. To encourage people to return to walking. C. To advise people to do outdoor activities. D. To recommend people to give up driving. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Mistakes are not only a part of life but also necessary for a successful life. But without making use of our mistakes, we would neither go on to master any skill nor realize our goal. George Bernard Shaw said, ''A man learns to skate by staggering(摇晃)about, making a fool of himself. 36 .'' But some of us, terrified by possibility of failure, lose pleasure of adventures by being too concerned with what people will think. 37 .Sometimes some parents set impossible high standard to encourage top performance. They tell children so often that it will be a great disappointment if they do not reach the goal. 38 .As a result it goes against their wish. One of the first things to realize is that success follows a natural course of trail and error. Impossible standards of perfection make us lose our peace of mind. The sooner one accepts that he is less than perfect, the sooner he can achieve his goal. 39 . We often tell our children how great those inventors are, for they invent the products of man’s achievements. But what we forget to emphasize is the painful process by which these miracles came into being. We should stress that nothing comes out right the first time. The great successes in life are those few who accept responsibility for their mistakes. 40 .Many major achievements have resulted from adventurous mistakes, which become stepping-stones of success. They gather their strength to realize their goal, never giving up. Accept mistakes, take a sense of homour, work hard and there is no doubt your success will come in end. A. They can go on with great adventure. B. In fact, no perfect things exist in the world. C. He is taking great pain that can't be imagined. D. These parents in fact force their children into fear of failure. E. They never waste emotion on regrets when they make a mistake. F. The fact is that most people never observe us so closely as we believe. G. Indeed, he progresses in all things by not minding making a fool of himself. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 During the day, I heard something happened at the Twin Towers.
