With the help of the car manufacturer (汽车制造商) Hyundai, a 13-year-old girl was able to send a message to space, where her dad works on the International Space Station (ISS).
“He gets to live and work in space and he is doing lots of experiments up there. He has to stay there for long periods of time. . . I miss him when he is gone, ” Stephanie, who is from Houston, Texas, said in a video. “I think if we could write a really big message he would be able to see it from space. ”
Hyundai took her wish to heart and decided to take on the challenge. Using Nevada’s Delamar Dry Lake as a canvas (画布), 11 drivers drove Hyundai cars, spelling out “Steph♡s you” across 2. 14 square miles of desert. A promotional video, which Hyundai made to record the process, caught her father’s response and showed the picture he took of her message from the ISS.
“I am happy that he could see it and knows that we are thinking about him back home, ” Stephanie said. “He has seen so many things up there, but I hope that this message was the most special. ”
There are many misunderstandings about what can and cannot be seen from space. Contrary to popular belief, the Great Wall of China cannot be seen from space, but many seemingly less important things can be seen.
“A farmer from Louisiana could be burning wastes in his backyard, and it would make a big smoke trail that astronauts could see it from space, ” said Mike Gentry, a photo researcher for NASA’s human-tended vehicles. And with a special camera, they can see the earth in great detail and even keep an eye on their favorite sports teams.

Not long ago, few little girls imagined they could grow up to become astronauts. For years in the United States, only men had that opportunity. In 1983, that changed. Sally Ride made history by becoming the first American woman to travel to space.
On July 23, 2012, Ride died at the age of 61.“Sally was a national hero and a powerful role model，” former President of the USA, Barack Obama said in a statement. “She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars.”
Ride became interested in space when she was a kid. “If you asked me when I was 12 whether I wanted to be an astronaut, I'm sure I would have said yes，” she said in a 2010 interview. “But I didn't even think about that as a possible career.”
After studying physics in college and graduate school, Ride got her chance. She was accepted into NASA's astronaut training program in 1978, and then chosen to be the first American female in space. In 1983, she blasted into space aboard the Challenger shuttle. “There is no amusement park ride on the Earth that even comes so close，” she said.
Ride returned to space on the Challenger a second time in 1984. Between the two missions, she spent a total of 343 hours in orbit. After that, she remained involved with the space program and also worked to share her passion for science with kids. She wrote six science books with others for children, and started her own science education company.
Ride knew that she held a unique place in history. “I realized how important it was for a woman to break that barrier and open the door for other women to be able to do the same exciting things that the men had been doing，” she said.

“It’s certainly new territory (领地), especially as home security cameras become easier to fix, ” says Lizzie Post, president of the Emily Post Institute, America’s distinguished manners advisors. “I think it will be very interesting to see what manners appear in terms of whether you tell people you have a camera or not, and whether guests have a right to ask that it be turned off, if it’s not a security issue. ” Post wants to make clear that she’s not talking about legal rights, but rather personal preference.
When it comes to security cameras, Post says it’s a host’s responsibility to make sure guests feel comfortable within their home.
