Sliced noodles are one of the most popular kinds of noodles in China. They are known as daoxiaomian in Chinese. In the past, they were made by hand. But now, things have changed.
Cui Runquan, a 35-year-old restaurant owner from Hebei Province in northern China, invented the robot Chef(主厨) Cui. Only within a few minutes, a bowl of sliced noodles is ready to serve. And customers think the noodles made by the robot chef taste good and look great! They even say the noodles are as good as the handsliced ones.
Cui Runquan came up with the idea of a robot chef while working in his restaurant. His idea became real in 2006 after a few months’ research. “As there are more and more job chances, young people don’t want to work as a daoxiaomian chef, because this job is tiring. And it’s a trend(趋势) that robots will finally work in factories and restaurants instead of people,” Cui Runquan said.
He is right. Thousands of Chef Cuis have been sent out to make noodles in restaurants around China since it was put into mass production(批量生产). And more Chef Cuis are waiting in line to work in restaurants.

It is surprising that owls(猫头鹰) were trained to send letters at an animal protection centre in England. The trainer Amy Smith said, “Taking a letter is not different from taking wild animals that they caught.” Amy painted some boxes in six colors, and put letters in them. The owls were taught to recognize(认出) the six colors first. Then they were trained to pick up a letter from one of the boxes, and put it into another box of the same color anywhere at the centre.
Otto is a rabbit with the “thought” of a chicken! He is like any other rabbit from its look. But he eats chicken food, sits on chicken eggs, and likes to hang out with chickens. Otto has lived with a group of hens since he was born. And the hens raised him as one of their own. Maybe Otto simply feels he is one of them because he has never known anything about rabbits. Otto acts like a chicken. For the chickens, he is one of them.
Koshik, an elephant, lives at the Everland Zoo in South Korea. He seems to have learnt the Korean language. He was brought to the zoo at the age of 5. He was the only elephant there. At last, the smart elephant learned to speak the language of the people there by himself. Although he only knows five words in Korean, which mean “hello”, “no”, “sit down”, “good”, and “lie down” in English, it is still amazing.

By greeting him and saying something about the training lessons, you are breaking the ice, and get his name naturally.

How do the old people around you spend their time? Do they spend it with their family or pets? Mr.Cao, an old person from Chengdu, has lived with a pet dog while his only son works far away. He and the dog have been with each other for seven years. But the dog is missing now.
What would you do if you were in Mr.Cao’s shoes? Will you do whatever you can to get it back? Mr.Cao put an ad in the newspaper and decided to offer his house to the person who could help get his pet dog back. Maybe you think it’s hard to believe. That’s because you know little about the feelings of the empty-nest (空巢) old people like Mr.Cao. With their children studying or working far away, their houses have become empty and they have no one to talk with at home.
According to a survey, more than 40 million empty-nest old people in China face endless days and loneliness in their life. The report shows that half of Chinese families are empty-nests, and in most big cities, it is even worse, as many as 70% of the families are empty-nests. Many of the old people are trying to make their days more enjoyable with the help of pets.
As the number of Chinese empty-nest old people is rising in the next few years, one fourth of the old will become empty-nest people. So it is time for all of us to think how we are going to help the old enjoy their later years.
