I visited Aruba last week. On the first day, I mainly enjoyed comfortable sunshine on the beach there. But I needed more than sunshine and sand to fill my week.
I rented a car the next day. My first stop that day was the Alto Vista Chapel, a historic north-side Roman Catholic church. Just as I entered it, a colourful “party bus” filled with singing tourists pulled into the parking lot, ending the silence. So I left soon.
From the church I made my way to the California Lighthouse, named for the steamship California that sank nearby in 1891. After spending some time there, I went to La Trattoria El Faro Blanco, an Italian restaurant that sits on top of the hill and offers scenic views.
I love golfing, so I wasn’t going on vacation without spending a day on the courses. The Tierra del Sol Country Club is for golfing on the island located at its northwest point. Opened in 1995, it is a beautiful place with views of the sea and the California Lighthouse. I spent a full day there.
To completely escape from the other tourists, I booked a four-hour jeep tour for the fourth day. I went to the Arikok National Park, which covers nearly 20 percent of the island. I stood on a cliff and looked down on a natural pool that was formed inside volcanic rock (火山岩). It was amazing.
My final night was spent at Madame Janette Restaurant. Friends who had been to Aruba told me I had to go there. I dined there while listening to a local musician performing the Beatles’ While My Guitar Gently Weeps. It was so good and the crowd demanded more.

Do you jump out of bed early, wide awake and ready to start your day? If so, you would be called an “early bird”. Perhaps, you hate the sound of your alarm clock (闹钟) each morning and have little energy until afternoon. If so, you’re probably a “night owl”.
Most people can be divided into such two groups, but what makes us this way? And is one better than the other? There are different opinions.
Usually, early risers have been praised as hard-working while those who prefer to get up late are considered lazy. Most people believe the early bird catches the worm.
Yet some scientists now believe “night owls” can really focus longer and produce more than early risers.
Research has found that the early bird does not always get the worm. In a Belgian study, both “morning people” and “evening people” were watched during their normal asleep and awake routines(常规). After 10 hours of being awake, the “ evening people” became more alert(思维敏捷的). However, the “ morning people” became sleepy and less focused. Researchers believe the reason for this difference is that night owls receive a last-minute increase from their brains. This added energy allows them to stay alert for longer periods of time.
Environment, lifestyle, activities and childhood routines all may have an effect on sleeping habits, yet genetics (遗传) may play the biggest role.
It is possible to change your sleeping habits through regular bedtimes, early exercise and by avoiding midnight snacks. But if you're happy rising early or staying up late, you’re probably doing what works best for your own personal body clock.

D. Early risers can think clearly after being awake for 10 hours.
31. What opinion does the author finally agree to?
A. People should get up early. B. Whatever time suits you, it’s OK.

Asking for help is a sign of strength(力量;长处) rather than weakness(弱点). In American culture, the independent individual(个人) is seen as their ideal(理想;典范). As the University of Missouri at St. Louis states on its website under the heading Key American Values, “Americans have been trained since very early in their lives to consider themselves as separate individuals who are responsible for their own situations in life and their own destinies(命运).” The value also makes them think they can do everything themselves, and makes them feel badly about asking for help when they need it.
And when it comes to work situations, when they think about asking for help there, sometimes they fear that a request for help would make them look inept. While this has always been true for men, many women in the workplace have felt the need to try twice as hard as their male colleagues and do twice as much to get just as far and to prove their worth. Sometimes when we think about asking for help, our inner voices tell us, “See, if you admit you can’t do this on your own, they’ll see you for the imposter(骗子) you really are.”
But the fact is, even though individualism is on the rise, we can’t do everything by ourselves and we shouldn’ t try.
Apple founder Steve Jobs once told the Santa Clara Valley Historical Association about the power of asking for help, and how he “never found anybody who didn’t want to help me when I asked them for help”. He said, at the age of 12, he called Bill Hewlett, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard, on the phone after getting his number from the phone book and asking him for spare parts so he could build a frequency counter (计频器). And Hewlett agreed and offered young Jobs a summer job assembling (装配部件) frequency counters.
“If you’re afraid of failing, you won’t get very far.” Jobs said.
32. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. What key American values are. B. Asking for help is a sign of strength.
C. Why Americans refuse to ask for help. D. Americans are responsible for their life.
33. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “inept” in Paragraph 2?
A. Impolite B Impatient. C Impossible D. Incompetent(不胜任的).
34. What can be learned from this US cultural phenomenon?
A. Americans suffer a lot from mutual distrust.
B. Americans lay emphasis on (重视) individual values.
C. Americans should learn to build up confidence.
D. Americans see weakness as a sigh of strength.
35. What can we learn from Job’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.
B. Be brave to try whatever you want.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. Learn to cooperate with others.

Kids and Food: Advice for Parents
It is important for parents to know how to help their kids eat healthy. Here are a few easy ways:
Parents control the supply lines(补给线). 36 Though kids may keep asking for less nutritious(有营养的) foods, parents should decide which foods are regularly provided in the house. Kids won’t go hungry. They’ll eat what’s available in the fridge at home.
Say goodbye to the “clean-plate club”. 37 Lots of parents grew up under the clean-plate rule, but that way doesn’t help kids listen to their own bodies when they are full. When kids feel full, they’re likely to overeat.
38 Food preferences are developed early in life, so try to offer different kinds of food. Likes and dislikes begin forming even when kids are babies. Parents may need to serve a new food on several different occasions for a child to accept it.
Food is not love. Find better ways to say “I love you.” When foods are used to reward kids and show love, they may start to turn to food when feeling worried or unhappy. 39
Kids do as you do. 40 When trying to teach good eating habits, try to set the best example.
Choose nutritious food, eat at the table, and don’t forget breakfast.
A. Start them young.
B. Rewrite the kids’ menu.
C. Be a role model and eat healthily yourself.
D. Offer praise and attention instead of food treats.
E. Let kids stop eating when they feel they’ve had enough.
F. You decide what foods to buy and when to serve them.
G. Let kids choose what to eat and how much of it they want.
