(福建省福州市2020届高三毕业班适应性练习)As a kid, Joanna Buckley wasn't interested in science—until she had a chance to try it. That happened when she got a chemistry set for Christmas.
“Over the course of a few weeks, I'd completed every experiment. But in the process, I polluted my parent's dining room carpet and burned the kitchen worktop with the spirit burner,”she says.
Now science is Buckley's job. She works in the chemistry department at the University of Sheffield in England. “I realize, firsthand, it is important that something or someone can show you why science is so great,” she says.Now the good news is that citizen science appears.
Citizen science takes the fun of experimenting a step further than Buckley's athome chemistry kit. That's because these experiments are real,looking for novel answers.
“Compared with a oneoff experiment, what's cool about citizen science is that students get that this has a purpose,” says Prunuske, who teaches microbiology and immunology at a medical college.“Students want to do a good job, because they know scientists are going to use the new data in their own research.”
Jennifer Long's job is to coordinate (协调) education and outreach.She agrees with Prunuske.“Kids like that it's real. And they like that it's important, that it matters.”Citizenscience projects have made big discoveries. One found a previously unknown galaxy cluster (星团).Another project helped assess how much damage a big earthquake had caused in Japan.And one of the first citizenscience projects helped scientists learn where monarch butterflies go every winter.
“Some adults worry about teens losing interest in science. That's one reason why they hope that fun, exciting citizenscience projects can help them keep engaged,” Long says.And she has some evidence that it's working. “Last year, a couple of students did say, ‘I really think I want to be a scientist now.’”

The youth aged 8 to 18 enter the Ministry through a secret door that is designed to open a world of opportunity by encouraging a love for writing.The organization believes that, “Writing increases selfrespect, improves communication—and can change lives.” That's because writing allows children's voices to be heard.
This year, the workshop is celebrating 10 years of helping children discover a love for writing through creative programs.Founded by Lucy Macnab, Ben Payne and bestselling author Nick Hornby, the organization works with around 1,000 children per year participating in schools, and community programs across Hackney,Islington, and Tower Hamlets.It now has over 400 volunteers and runs its programs free of charge for the youth of the areas.
“Through a range of creative writing programs, and onetoone mentoring, we aim to help young people find their own qualities that can be developed,” Macnab told The Telegraph.“We build confidence,selfrespect,and communication skills in both workshops for schools and outofschool writing clubs.”
One 10year participant, Nmeso, said that the weekly afterschool club he attends at the Ministry has helped him grow his imagination and improve his academic performance. In fact, he was able to move up a grade in school. What's even more remarkable is that Nmeso has had a story he wrote published—along with other writers in the program—titled Andre has a Hard Time.This is Nmeso's success story.
