The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest bridge in the world from 1937 when it was completed until the Verrazano Narrows Bridge was built in New York in 1964.Today,it is still the ninth longest bridge in the world.
For many years before the Golden Gate Bridge was built, the only way to get across San Francisco Bay was by ship. And by the early twentieth century the Bay was crowded because of them.In the 1920s,engineer and bridge-builder Joseph Strauss believed that a bridge should be built across the Golden Gate to solve the problem.
Many groups went against him, each for their own selfish reasons.Besides, the engineering challenge was also huge — the Golden Gate Bridge area often has winds of up to 60 miles per hour, and strong ocean currents (洋流) sweep below the surface. If all that weren’t enough,it was the middle of the Great Depression, and funds were hard to find.
Strauss didn’t give up,and the Golden Gate Bridge history began when San Francisco officials approved$35 million to build the Golden Gate Bridge. After the artistic design and red color were chosen, construction work began in 1933.The Golden Gate Bridge project was completed in 1937,an important date in San Francisco history.
Strauss was a pioneer in building safety. The Bay Bridge, which was being built at the same time cost 24 lives while the Golden Gate Bridge cost only 12,a great achievement in a period of time when one man was killed on most construction projects for every million spent.

For a mother and kids at the Philadelphia Zoo,in Pennsylvania,it was a close encounter of the frightening kind.Directly in front of them was a Siberian tiger. But the family did not dread. They laughed. The tiger was in an enclosed (围住的) walkway.
That tiger trail (路径) is part of Zoo360.It has changed the way humans and animals experience the zoo.But Zoo360’s bigger influence may come from its effort to change animals’ lives in captivity (圈养).Many experts think zoos need much repair work if they’re going to last. The Philadelphia Zoo may be the best model for that change.
“Even the best zoos today are based on captivity,” says Jon Coe.He is the zoo designer who invented the Zoo360 Animal Exploration Trail.“To me,that’s the big weakness.”
In 1975,when David Hancocks took over as director of the Woodland Park Zoo,in Seattle,Washington,it looked like any other big-city zoo.But within a year,Hancocks asked Coe to rethink how zoo animals are kept.Coe developed a plan that included plants growing naturally, wide open areas, and plenty of light.
Many zoos, however, have difficulty in providing a proper home for animals.Take elephants, for example.A recent study shows how well elephants live when they have social connections and can collect their own food.In 2011,the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) started requiring zoos with elephants to keep at least three of the animals and an elephant scientist on staff. Not every zoo can afford that.
Hancocks has done a lot to shape the zoos we see today. Now he spends more time thinking about their future—and weaknesses.
People are going to zoos in greater numbers than ever.According to the AZA,in 2015,more than 170 million people visited zoos in the U.S.Still,those big numbers will do little to lessen the growing arguments against keeping animals captive.
“Where are we going?” asks Hancocks.“I guess I’m worried.”

Why do you run? Different people have different reasons.Whatever your reason, there’s one thing we can be sure of:Running is much better injury-free.In his book,Dr.Jordan Metzl’s Running Strong,Metzl has the perfect suggestions for enjoying your running without losing your well-being.Here are five must-follow rules for injury-free running:
1.Train for your level of fitness and your goals.
1 If you run for fitness and your goal is 30 minutes a day, that’s cool. But if you are just starting out,you need to get there slowly.
2.Wear the right shoes for your feet.
You will hear lots of opinions about whether running shoes really help prevent injury and whether you should even wear them. 2 And some of you may need a little added assistance from inserts (鞋垫).
3. 3
Be honest about how much sleep you need and stick to it.The cool runner is the one who wins the race.Sleep will get you there.
4.Fuel your body right for running and recovery.
4 And after a workout or race, you need to deliver nutrients to all the body rebuilders in your muscles,so they can do their job and get you back into tip-top shape for your run tomorrow.
5.Pay attention to pain.
When pain changes the way you run, stop running. 5 And use dynamic rest (动态休息) to stay in shape until you are back on your running feet.
A.Try to find out what’s going on and treat it.
B.Get seven to eight hours of sleep every night.
C.Running should be seen as fun rather than pain.
D.Don’t run more miles than your body can deal with.
E.A good pre-run meal plan is one that keeps you stepping strong.
F.It is because of the health benefits, including lowering your risk for disease.
