It was in 1978, when I was 18 and was working as a nurse in a small town about 270 km away from Sydney, Australia. I was looking forward to enjoying a five-day vacation. Unluckily, the only train back to my home in Sydney had already left. So I thought I could find a lift.
Waiting by the side of the highway for three hours, I still failed to find a lift. No one stopped for me. Finally, a man walked over and introduced himself as Gordon. He said that although he couldn’t give me a lift, I should go to his house for lunch. He had noticed me standing for hours in the November heat and thought I must be hungry. I was doubtful as a young girl but he assured(使…放心) me I was safe, and he also offered to help me find a lift home. When we arrived at his house, he made sandwiches for me. After lunch, he helped me find a lift home.
In 2003, while I was driving to a nearby town, I saw an elderly man standing in the heat, trying to find a lift. I thought it was a chance to help, just as I’d been helped 25 years earlier. I pulled over(靠边) and asked him to get into my car. I made him comfortable on the back seat and offered him some water.
After a few moments of small talk, the man said to me, “You haven’t changed a bit, even your red hair is still the same.” I couldn’t remember where I’d met him. He then told me he was the man who had given me lunch and helped me find a lift all those years ago. It was Gordon.

Sending messages to space is problematic, so when a teenager from Houston, Texas, wanted to send a message to her astronaut father, she had to be creative.
13-year-old Stephanie decided that long-distance phone calls weren't enough and she wanted to make a special sign for her father to know how much she missed him while he was away.
Her father is good at taking photos and likes to take pictures of the earth when he is flying in space. Stephanie thought she could use his hobby to send him a message from back on earth.
Stephanie decided to create a huge art project in the desert that her father would be able to see from the International Space Station. She asked car producer Hyundai for help, to make the desert drawing, which has now broken a world record for its size.
The car company used eleven cars to draw the message on the land in Nevada’s Delamar Dry Lake, that read ‘Steph [hearts] you!’, using coordinates(坐标) and a helicopter(直升飞机).
Stephanie drew the note on paper and worked with Hyundai to get it copied onto a large land surface. Her father took a picture of the project from space to show his daughter that her plan had worked.
As large as 5,556,412 square meters, the Guinness World Record has now announced it the largest of its kind.

Watching volcano eruptions(火山喷发) is a wonderful experience, and you can certainly feel the beat by climbing to the top of Pacaya for a close look. There are guided tours every day up this active volcano from Antigua, giving travelers a chance to see Mother Nature at her most powerful.
It’s easy to drive to Pacaya from Antigua, a beautiful city with many colorful houses along its old streets that are turned into art-works during its Holy Week festival. Whenever you come to Antigua, there are always many people to visit Pacaya.
But climbing Pacaya is no easy job: it is 2560 meters high, and reaching the summit takes two to three hours. As you climb, you can hear the sounds of eruptions high above. You can see remains from recent eruptions along the path as you are near the active top.
Many tours are planned carefully so when you arrive at the top there is plenty of time to admire sunset(观赏日落). On a good day the view from the top is very exciting. The active mouth boils(沸腾), sending red lava(岩浆) over its sides, and sometimes shoots hot steam(蒸气) up to 100 meters into the air. There is a strong bad smell in the air. As evening turns deeper into the night, the burning lava quietly falls down the side of the volcano. For you, too, it is time to get down.

Lions prefer to eat without having to do too much work. When resting in the shade, they are also watching the sky to see what is flying by, and even in the heat of the day they will suddenly start up and run a mile to find out what is going on. If another animal has made a kill, they will drive it off and take the kill for themselves. A grown lion can easily eat 60 pounds of meat at a single feeding. Often they eat until it seems painful for them to lie down.
Female lions, being thinner and faster, are better hunters than the males. But the males don’t mind. After the kill they move in and take the best share.
Most kills are made at night. It’s about twenty daytime tries for one kill.
When lions are hiding for an attack by a water hole, they wait patiently. Killing is the exciting moment in their daily life, since these great animals spend most of their time, about 20 hours a day, sleeping and resting.
Lions are social animals, and when they are having a rest, they love to touch each other. After drinking at a water hole, a female lion rests her head on another’s back. When walking, young lions often touch faces with older ones, an act of close ties among members of the group.

A. Lions make most kills in the daytime.
B. Female lions are stronger than males so they’re successful hunters
