Maybe it had to do with the news Dad read before Colin left. The morning headlines(标题)were full of the usual sad stories. “No good news again!” Dad said. Car accidents! House burns! Storm damage(损害)! Colin moved quickly from house to house leaving papers in the mailbox. He wished he could bring only good news to his family, also to his friendly neighbours. “How could I make things better for everyone?” he wondered. Colin noticed Alice coming. She only had one real eye. The other was made of glass. He liked Alice even if many others laughed at her. He didn’t realize how much it helped her, having a friend like Colin. Each time Colin left a paper by a customer’s door, he thought, “How could I make some good news?” Colin gave his usual cheerful “Hi” to everyone on his way. His smile was like the rising sun. Someone was crying and he ran to where a little boy had fallen and hurt his leg. Colin calmed him down until the boy’s mother arrived. “I’m glad you’re my paperboy,” she told Colin. He continued on his way, but he didn’t feel tired. It was fun doing what he usually did—helping others. He raced up the street to his last customer. Mrs. Williams saw Colin coming and had peanut butter cookies as a treat for her favourite paperboy. She wondered why such a lively boy always had time to chat with an old lady. Colin’s own treat for his customers came from his heart. He did have much good news to share, even if he didn’t realize it. His smile and polite manners brought cheering-up news to all his customers. 1.What was Colin’s trouble? A.His news-bag was too heavy. B.He had heard of many sad stories. Your feelings about other people, however, are really just show the way that you look at yourself. So you can allow others to be the mirror to see your own feelings of self-worth more clearly. And,you can see the people you don’t like as mirrors to show you what you are not accepting about yourself. To live peacefully with others, you will need to learn patience. A big challenge is to let your judgment of others be a lifelong research of yourself. Your task is to consider all the judgments you make onto others carefully and to begin to see whether you can use them to help yourself to become better. Several days ago I had a business lunch with a man who showed objectionable table manners. My first feeling was that he was impolite. When I noticed that I was judging him, I stopped and asked myself what I was feeling. I discovered that I was nervous to be seen with someone who was eating with his mouth open.I was very surprised to find how much I cared about how the other people in the restaurant judged me. Remember that your judgment of someone will not stop you from becoming like him. Just because I think my lunch partner impolite, it does not prevent me from looking or acting like him. In the same way, my patience to him would not make me eat food with my mouth open. When you get close to life in this way, those whom you hate and those whom you love can be seen as mirrors, guiding you to discover parts of yourself that you dislike and to accept your greatest personalities you are proud of. 1.When we judge others, we are really . A.beginning to know them B.treating them in a polite way C.showing what we ourselves are D.telling them what they should do 2.The writer felt nervous when he was with his lunch partner because . A.he was afraid to be influenced by his lunch partner B.he was too angry to go on with his lunch any more C.he was afraid he might be thought badly of by others D.he was too surprised at the manners of his lunch partner 3.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “objectionable”? A.unknown B.unacceptable C.unfair D.unreasonable 4.What is the best title for this passage? A.An Impolite Lunch Partner B.Pay Attention to Our Manners C.How to Judge Others Properly D.Know Ourselves by Judging Others C 15、Many people take running as a way to keep fit. They like to run in hot weather and enjoy the feeling of being wet through with sweat while running. Cold weather during winter months, with low temperatures and freezing cold winds, may keep many people from running in the open air. However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance. Many runners might find it easier to run in winter than in hot weather. Lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower. And the body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather because dehydration levels are lower in winter than in warmer conditions. John Brewer is a professor of applied sports science at ST. Mary’s University in London. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room where summer and winter weather conditions are recreated. The test subjects, were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions and their biological measurements were recorded and studied. From the study, every movement runners make produces heat. The heat can be really damaging unless the body can lose it. One way in which people lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through droplets of sweet. The body also loses it by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin and it puts more stress on the heart, particularly in hot conditions because it’s much harder to lose heat when the outside environment is warm. As the result shows running in hot temperatures results in 6 percent higher heart rates. When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to pump blood to the skin surface. Therefore, it requires less energy. The most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keep as dry as possible when exercising in low temperatures. Wear mittens on your hands instead of gloves. Wear more than one layer of clothing to keep sweat away from your skin. So don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running. 1.Why do most people dislike running outdoors in winter? A.It’s too cold. B.It’s hard to run. C.It’s too easy to sweat. D.It’s bad for the heart rate. 2.What does the underline word "dehydration" in Paragraph 3 means the loss of ______from the body. A.water B.heat C.stress D.blood 3.Why did John Brewer make a group of people run in a room? A.It was easier to be reduce stress. B.It was easier to produce heat. C.It was easier to recreate different weather conditions. D.It was easier to record their biological measurements. 4.What should people wear while running in cold winter? A.A hat. B.Gloves. C.More clothing. D.More than one layer of clothing. 5.What’s the purpose of the passage? A.To tell people not to run in summer. B.To describe how runners run in winter. C.To encourage people to run outdoors in winter. D.To compare the advantages of running in winter and in summer. D 16、 Today, I want to tell you some stories from my life. The first story is about connecting the dots(小圆点). Reed College, the college I attended, offered perhaps the best calligraphy(书法) lessons in the country. Calligraphy was attractive to me, so I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I didn’t hope for any real use of this in my life. It was just a hobby. But ten years, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. You might be very confused about the meaning of what you are doing now. But you have to believe the dots will somehow connect in the future. Every effort you make is worth the price. It will pay off in the end. This belief has never let me down, and it has made all the differences in my life. My second story is about love and loss. Woz and I started Apple in a garage when I was 20. But later, I got fired(解雇). How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, it just happened. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was so hard for me. But it turned out to be the best thing that could have ever happened to me. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life. I’m pretty sure if I hadn’t been fired from Apple, I wouldn’t become who I am now. The loss completed me. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. What’s more, you have to find out what you love. The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. You’ll know when you find it. 1.Jobs told us _____ stories in the passage. A.one B.two C.three D.four 2.In the first paragraph, we can find EXCEPT “_____”. A.When Jobs designed the first computer many years later, he used his calligraphy. B.Jobs was interested in calligraphy when he was at college. A.satisfied B.pleased C.sad D.happy 5.The underlined word “brick” in the last paragraph probably means _____. A.something soft B.something hard C.something light D.something different E 17、Mr. Brown was going away for a week. Before he left, he said to his son, "If anyone asks for me, you can tell him that your father has been out for doing something, and will be back in a week, then be sure to ask him to sit down for a cup of tea." "OK, Dad," said his son. But he was afraid his son couldn't remember this, he wrote these words down on a piece of paper and gave it to him. His son put it into his small pocket, took it out and looked at it every now and then. Four days passed, but no one came to see his father. The boy thought that there was no man to come and that the piece of paper was of no more use for him,
