13、It was the Greek shopkeeper who taught me about the power of being kind.
In 2008 I left Spain to study alone in London. My parents had to bring up my three younger sisters and two younger brothers, so I found three part-time jobs to pay for my studies. I worked early mornings and late nights, so I was tired, really tired, all the time.
Unfortunately, I got a cold and had a very high fever. Because I had spent all my free time working since I came to London. I hardly took part in any activities and I had no friends. Besides, I was too shy to communicate with others and ask others for help. After sleeping on the sickbed for two days, I went out to get some food. Normally, I went to the supermarket, but this time I went into the Greek shop, a small corner shop, because it was closer.
I picked up some food and gave it to the shopkeeper, who asked me, "You look terrible, my boy! You are not feeling well, right?"
I said "Yes" in a low voice.
She pointed at the salami(腊肠) and bread I was buying and offered, "I can make you a sandwich, so you don't have to do it yourself. "
I nodded without saying a word.
So, she made the sandwich and asked me to wait a moment. She went into the back room and came again with a bowl of hot soup.
"It will warm you up, " she said with a friendly smile.
What really warmed me up was not the soup. It was her smile that told me she cared me. Her kindness reminded me of my mother.
I had been quite shy, but from that day on, I did not let shyness prevent me from communicating with and being kind to others. Now I work in a children's hospital in Africa. I love my work and people around me. I always bring my smile and kindness to them.

Box-office monster “Zootopia” has been called the “most Easter egg-packed(彩蛋) movie ever made by Disney”. One of its Easter eggs comes to the species of the news anchor seen on the film’s ZNN channel. Depending on where in the world you’re watching “Zootopia”, the type of animals hosting may change.
Zootopia went a step further to make the different versions (版本). In the US, Canada, France, the news anchor is moose(麋鹿). In Brazil, it’s a jaguar(美洲虎). Australia and New Zealand get a koala; while Chinese audiences see a giant panda.

What can I say…. I’m a huge Disney fan. Maybe not like my friend over at________________________, the Disney cartoons have been a big part of my life. So, in a sense, the Disney animated features are a big deal to me.
Whether young or old, Zootopia’s story carries a powerful and thematic commentary message that’s highly valued and relative (especially in today’s world). As Judy Hopps says in the movie “Life’s a little bit messy. We all make mistakes. No matter what type of animal you are, change starts with you.” And I can’t agree more with that statement.

15、My friends and I had just finished lunch at a hotel when it started to rain heavily. When it became lighter, I decided to get my car which was parked at my office three streets away.
My friends argued that I shouldn’t go, mainly because I was seven months pregnant (怀孕的) then. I promised that I’d be very careful. One of them wanted to come with me but I asked her to stay with another friend who needed help with her baby.
I walked out of the hotel and started making my way to the car. At the crossing, a black car stopped and a man came out with an umbrella. Before I knew what was happening, he walked right through me and told me he’d escort (护送) me. Although I refused, he insisted (坚持) that he would.
During our walk, he kept telling me to walk slower, as the ground was wet. When we got to the car-park, I thanked him and he went away. I did not get his name and can hardly recognize (认出) him now. Did he stop for me? I’ll never know.
So how did I pay it forward? I was at home when I noticed two Indian workers walking in the heavy rain. They were probably on their way to the working place near my home____________

Laura:You know, people in the city wish for the life in the countryside. It relaxes my work pressure; besides, it gives me the exciting experience of being a “thief”.

17、Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, drink and even fight. They often do something dangerous.
Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely (可能) to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong? Not really. So what’s the reason?
According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them—that is “peer influence”.
As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and also they care more about what they think of them. This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs.
In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely.
Why do peers have such a big influence on teens’ behavior?
As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油门) but a weak brake (刹车). The “accelerator” is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake” is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident.
But the good news is that a violent (暴力的)teenager doesn’t necessarily become a violent adult. About two-thirds to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it. “They get more self-controlled.”
1.What does the underlined word “irrational” in the 2nd paragraph mean?
A.Quick. B.Crazy. C.Careful.
2.Why are teenagers likely to make wrong decisions according to the text?
A.They like difficult tasks.
B.They don’t care about costs.
C.They care a lot about what their peers think of them.
3.How does Laurence explain the influence of peer pressure on teens’ behavior?
A.By comparing it with how a car works.
B.By comparing it with an accident.
C.By showing research findings.
4.What can we learn from the text?
A.Teenagers are easy to have traffic accidents.
B.Peer influence is bad on teenagers.
C.Most of the teenagers become less violent when they grow up.
