Many people are afraid to eat it, because they think the bacteria(细菌) in it might make them sick. However, a new study shows that sea bacteria are good for people. The study finds that a special enzyme(酶) from sea bacteria is helpful to humans. It helps people to get more energy from food. To people’s surprise, the enzyme is present only in the Japanese. The Japanese traditionally like to eat food rich in seaweed(海藻). And the seaweed is rich in this kind of enzyme. However, the enzyme isn’t present in all the Japanese. During the study, just 5 out of 14 Japanese had the enzyme. All the Americans studied didn’t have the enzyme. “The number is small,” said researcher Mirjam Czjzek. “But we can say that this enzyme is present only in the Japanese and not in the North Americans.” Then some people think that maybe other people are able to get the enzyme if they eat a lot of seaweed. The study suggests that they collect uncooked seaweed to make their sushi. Restaurant sushi is often cooked, which will destroy the enzyme. Although dogs are seen as friends and part of the family today, China and Western countries have different cultural beliefs about dogs. In Chinese, some words about dogs have derogatory meaning, such as “Lead a dog’s life.” In English, however, the situation is different. People use “every dog has his day” to describe a period of good luck, “work like a dog” to describe a hard worker and “a gay dog” to describe a happy person. The dog-human relationship goes right back to the beginnings of Western civilization. Perhaps the most moving example is from the 8th century BC, in Greek poet Homer’s The Odyssey. When Greek hero Odysseus finally returns home after 20 years away at war, no one but his dog Argos recognizes him. The Argos is an old, sick dog, and is about to die; but he is overjoyed to see his owner again after so many years. In fact, people were close to dogs in away they weren’t close to cows, pigs or even horses. Farmers worked closely with dogs. But even after science came to agriculture and dogs lost their traditional roles, the relationship between men and dogs remained. Nowadays in the West, millions of people keep dogs as pets. They are at the heart of family life. People feed them, take them on holidays and look after them. In return, dogs are loyal in a way that friends sometimes aren’t. This loyalty is the origin of the English saying, “A dog is man’s best friend.” 1.Which may be a saying about dogs in China? A.A gay dog. B.Lead a dog’s life. C.Work like a dog. D.Every dog has its day. 2.The story of Odysseus and his dog is moving because . A.the dog will die in two years B.he is overjoyed to see his dog again C.only the dog recognizes him after the war D.he returns home after twenty years away at war 3.What happened to dogs after science came to agriculture? A.Farmers worked closely with dogs. B.They still kept their traditional roles. C.People preferred pigs and horses to dogs. D.Men and dogs remained in good relationship. 4.What can we know from the passage? A.All people keep dogs as pets in western countries. B.In fact, dogs may be more loyal than some friends. C.Argos was a great Greek hero in the 8th century BC. D.China and England have the same beliefs about dogs. C 15、Maybe you think that many parents have a lot to learn about what their children are doing online. According to a recent survey by Symantec Company, which makes many kinds of security(安全)software for home and business computers, there's a "huge difference between parents and their kids". Parents of children under the age of 18 were asked to estimate(估计)how much time their kids spent online each week. The parents said about three hours a week on average(平均).The kids-ages 8 to 17-who took the survey said they were spending an average of seven hours online each week. "I really think that's because of the time they spend on their mobile phones and computers, when their parents don't even know they're online," says Symantec's Bill Rosenkrantz. "Remember, cellphones, PDAs and video game machines all make it possible to surf the Internet. You don't have to sit in front of a computer screen." And what are the kids doing on the Web? "They're doing things, like downloading music, they're going to social networking sites, they're actually shopping online when parents don't think they're doing those kinds of activities," says Rosenkrantz. "They're also, we think, doing some things with research papers and other kinds of activities with homework maybe where they're getting some information online and they really shouldn't be." Nearly a quarter of the kids (23 percent) night do things their parents would not agree. So how does a modern parent deal with this type of situation? "The first thing we strongly recommend is that parents spend fine with their children online," Rosenkrantz, says. "Sit down with them and understand what they're doing. Secondly, have a dialogue about it. Have a dialogue about what's an acceptable activity, what's an unacceptable activity, and set some ground rules-time online, things you can and can't do. Really have those conversations. That's the most important ." There are a lot of bad people on the Internet. That's why it's so important for parents to know what their kids are doing online. 1.The data(数据)in the second paragraph are used to show . A.parents don't exactly know kids' online activities B.time spent online changes with children's ages C.children always spend too much time online D.children spend more time online than their parents 2.What can we learn from the passage? A.Some kids surveyed may go against their parents' rules. B.Most parents know what their kids are doing online. C.Special home computers are being made by Symantec. D.Parents are too busy to pay attention to their kids. 3.In Rosenkrantz's opinion, the key to the situation is that parents should . A.shorten their kids' time spent online B.know their kids' online activities C.use security software in computers D.have a dialogue with their kids 4.What's the purpose of the passage? A.To advertise a piece of useful security software. B.To call parents' attention to kids' online behaviour. C.To warn children of the risks online activities. D.To give reasons for kids' bad Internet habits. D 16、Circle 0 if the statement is not true of your child. Circle 1 if the statement is sometimes true of your child. E 17、When I was about seven or eight years old, I once went into the barn (马厩) one evening where my dad was doing his daily work. I was surprised to see him wearing his hat backwards. It looked funny. When I asked Dad why he put his hat backwards, he smiled and gave me an explanation. There was a large water tank for the cattle that had to be filled every day. Since it took a long time to finish the work, he would turn the water on and then go about doing other things like cleaning the barn or feeding the cattle, which usually cost him twenty minutes or even more time. The danger, of course, was that if he forgot to turn the water off, the tank would overflow and water would be wasted, which would make a mess. Then he told me the reason why he had his hat turned around. When he finished other work and began to take off his work clothes, he would notice as he removed his hat that the visor (帽舌) was not where it was supposed to be. This would remind him that the water was still running. Then he would go back to the barn and turn it off. I have seen my dad develop many other systems over the years. And I will never forget how helpful and valuable they are. Some may have even been life-saving. Sometimes, people may forget some things. So they will easily make mistake though they may try their best. Using some good methods can help them operate more effectively. In order not to blame others or yourself for mistakes, you’d better look for some ways, whether they are funny or not, as long as they will help you in achieving what you truly wish to do. This could be utility, and as simple as a checklist. Now I’ve used a lot of them, such as putting my car keys in the same place every time. It could be having someone check your work and it could also be a computer program that helps to find out whether your calculations are correct. 1.The author found his father’s behavior funny because__________. A.he had never been to the barn before B.his father’s hat was different from others C.the horses played some tricks D.his father wore the hat in a strange way 2.What would the author’s father NOT do in the barn according to the passage? A.Clean the barn B.Feed the chic
