21.(6分)In a country where many girls are still discouraged from going to school, Sushma Verma is having anything but a typical childhood.
The 13-year-old girl from a poor family in north India has enrolled in (入学登记) a master’s degree in microbiology, after her father sold his land to pay for some of his daughter’s tuition to help her to be part of India’s growing middle class.
Verma finished high school at 7 and earned an undergraduate degree at age 13 with the encouragement of her uneducated and poor parents. “They allowed me to do what I wanted to do,” Verma said, “I hope that other parents don’t make their children accept their choices.”
Sushma lives with her family in a crowded single-room apartment in Lucknow. Their only income is her father’s daily wage of up to 200 rupees (less than $3. 50) for laboring on construction sites. Their most precious possessions include a study table and a second-hand computer. It is not a great atmosphere for studying, she admitted. But having no television and little else at home has advantages, she said. “There is nothing to do but study.”
Her first choice was to become a doctor, but she cannot take the test to qualify for medical school until she is 18. “So I chose the master’s of science and then I will do a doctor’s degree,” she said.
In another family, Sushma might not have been able to receive higher education. Millions of Indian children are still not enrolled in grade school, and many of them are girls whose parents choose to hold them back in favour of advancing their sons. Some from conservative (守旧的) village cultures are expected only to get married. “The girl is an inspiration for students who are born with everything”, said Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak of Sulabh International, who decided to help after seeing a local television program on Sushma. She is also receiving financial aid from well-wishing civilians and other charities.
1、Which word can best describe Sushma Verma’s father?

C.To tell us her room is poorly furnished.
D.To tell us her room is a great place to study in.
3、What made Sushma not qualified to take the test for medical school?
A.Her age. B.Her choice.
C.Her interest. D.Her poverty.
4、What can we infer from paragraph 6?
A.Indian parents treat their sons and daughters equally.
B.Indian parents spend much of their income on education.
C.Indian boys have more chances to receive higher education.
D.Indian girls in the countryside get married when they leave primary school.
22.(8分)We are enrolled in the full-time school called “life”. Every day in this school, we have opportunities to learn new lessons. No matter whether we like these lessons or not, we have to take them, because they are our lessons.
Why are we here in this world? What is the purpose of life? Humans have tried to discover the meaning of life for thousands of years, but failed to get the answer, because the meaning of life is different from person to person.
Each one of us has his or her special purpose and path, unique and different. As we travel on our life path, we will learn many great lessons in order to fulfill that purpose. Learning our lessons well is the key to discovering the real meaning of our own life.
As we travel through our lifetime, we may be taught hard lessons that others don't have to face, while others spend years struggling with problems we don’t need to deal with. We may never know why we love English, not physics, which indicates that our path is different. While traveling on our own path, sometimes alone, we should, first of all, take a basic lesson in openness.
Openness means being receptive. Life will present us with so many lessons, none of which are useful to us unless we can recognize them and are open to their values. These lessons arc not easy to learn, but we should regard them as gifts. But how can we recognize these lessons? It is a matter of what “glasses” we are wearing at the time. It is not difficult to spot them if we take them as opportunities. So when we are not open to learning our lessons, failing a weekly English test might be like a disaster rather than an opportunity to us. Of course, the hard lessons may not be fun, but they can actually be the biggest gifts we receive from life.
1、The author may be in favor of the viewpoint that all men are born .
A.equal B.different
C.to learn lessons D.ready for challenge
2、The example of “we love English, not physics" is mentioned to show that we .
A.choose our own path in life
B.need to face some hard lessons
C.discover the meaning of our own life
D.realize the necessity of openness
3、Whether we can see life lessons as gifts depends upon our .
A.angles of view
B.common value system
C.experiences from life
D.willingness to face challenge
4、What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Life and lesson B.Life as School
C.Life School and Students D.Gifts from Life
23.(8分) Russ Gremel, now 98 years old, decided it was time to donate $2 million to the Illinois Audubon Society, a charity to purchase nearly 400 acres of land for wildlife protection. Gremel was able to make this amazing donation because he purchased $1,000 worth of Walgreens stock seven decades ago whose value has grown recently.
“A single man with no kids, Gremel has lived in the same Chicago house for 95 years, and has always lived simply”, neighbor Patrick Falso told TODAY. Falso said he heard Gremel say many times the “money wasn’t mine to begin with” and that he always intended to give it away.
The Gremel Wildlife shelter was founded on June 4. Illinois Audubon Society president Jim Herkert said Gremel’s donation was extremely generous. “It’s allowing us to protect a really valuable and important possession and realize one of Gremel’s wishes that we could find a place where people could come out and experience nature the way he did as a kid,” Herkert told TODAY.
After doing all this, this past weekend, Gremel adopted an old Chihuahua(吉娃娃犬). Winnie the dog was picked up as a homeless dog several months ago. She suffered from a kind of cancer, which was treated—and all she needed was a loving home, which Colleen Collins, the founder of Perfect Pooches Adoption Agency, was determined to find.
Gremel had lost his own beloved Chihuahua earlier this year. When he reached out to Collins about Winnie, she felt this could be a good match. That feeling grew when she brought Winnie to his house for a meet and greet, and Winnie was introduced not only to Gremel but also some of his friends and neighbors. One had brought over a lot of fresh strawberries; all said they’d be there to help out in any way needed.

24.(8分)Middle school graduation style may be a bit more casual than formal high school or college ceremonies, but the move from junior to senior high school is still an important occasion that can be celebrated in many ways.
The decision whether students will wear caps and gowns(礼服)for middle school graduation is usually up to the individual school. Some feel that this is the perfect way to commemorate the special occasion, while others feel the cap and gown is unnecessary for a junior high ceremony.
For those schools that choose not to use caps and gowns,it is typically suggested that students wear dress clothes for the occasion.Students may also be encouraged to dress for graduation in a uniform manner, such as white shirts and black pants or skirts,or educators may suggest dressing in the school colors.Schools that choose to have students wear academic regalia(制服)for the ceremony may choose to purchase gowns in a variety of sizes from a store such as Graduate Affairs, and then let students borrow them, and reuse them each year.Caps may be purchased by a Parent-Teacher Organization or by the individual graduates.
Parents may choose to host open house or party when their child graduates from middle school. This is typically an informal affair, such as a barbeque or pool party,or simply appetizers or cake to honor the graduate.Simple backyard games such as volleyball, bocce ball, and Frisbee are a fun way to entertain young teens, tweens, and well-wishers.Other party games and a band might also be considerations for a large or more complicated gathering.
