But even more important are different concepts of time and approaches to time in different cultures. People from the USA as well as other North Americans believe “Time is money”. This value of time is rooted in their ancestors. Early in the 17th century, their ancestors arrived on the Atlantic coast, a new, undeveloped land. To survive in the tough environment, they had to struggle day and night. Time meant so much to them that they had not even one second to waste. After decades of struggle, they developed the value of efficient use of time and passed it down. Thus far, the Americans are still eager to finish things quickly and are impatient with too reflective(深思熟虑的) people. In some countries, the American work style of speeding everything up will have no significance. In the Arab East, the more important you are, the faster service you get. Close relatives take absolute priority; non-relatives are kept waiting. In the Middle East, a deadline, which is often established to show the degree of urgency or importance of work, will do nothing but stop the Middle Easterners from working, because they consider it rude and overly demanding. Another aspect reflecting different concepts of time is the classification of monochronic-time and polychronic-time by Edward T Hall. People from monchronic(共时性的) cultures, such as the Germans, the Austrians, the Swiss and the Americans, do only one important thing at a time. In polychromic(多元时间模式的) cultures, people such as Arab, Asians and Latin Americans take an entirely opposite approach. They do several things at once. Time commitments, e.g. deadlines, schedules, are taken rather casually and changed often and easily. Miscommuication will arise when people from two cultures contact. Charlies Hawkins, a U.S. teacher, told me that many a time his appointments with Indians were interrupted constantly, not only by private phone calls, but also by long conversations with other people and even the neighbor’s children, which displeased and even annoyed him. 1、Why did the ancestors of the North Americans believe “Time is money”? A.They had to work efficiently to survive. B.They got the idea from their past generations. C.They didn’t like to deal with reflective people. D.They formed the habit of finishing work ahead of time. 2、What can be concluded from Paragraph 3? A.Deadlines will make American people angry. B.In the Arab East, you’d better speed everything up. C.Middle Easterners can’t deal with demanding work. D.People from the Arab East attach importance to relationship. 3、What can we learn about people from monochronic cultures? A.They tend to interrupt others constantly. B.They can’t tolerate lateness or interruptions. C.They are more likely to change their schedules. D.They like to schedule several activities at the same time. 4、Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A.The importance of the diversity of culture B.The relationship between efficiency and culture C.Different time values in different cultures D.Monochronic culture and polychronic culture 22.(8分)The 18-year-old Hope from Arlington, Virginia has a lot of reasons to be happy. Her high school graduation is just days away. She goes to Guatemala in the summer to work there with her church. Then, in the fall, she will head to Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. But that is not why she is smiling right now. Tonight, in a beautiful long dress, with her hair perfectly curled, she is excited to be going to prom. A prom is a formal dance for high school students that’s usually at the end of the year. Prom was born in the United States more than 100 years ago and has spread to other parts of the world. In America, it has become an industry similar to the wedding business. A study done by the American financial company, Visa, found that, on average, an American family spends more than 900 dollars on prom. Much of it is spent on what the young adults wear to the formal dance. Gowns (礼服) often cost hundreds of dollars. And then there are costs linked to hair and makeup, flowers for prom dates, dinner and transportation. It adds up. But some students find ways to make the event less expensive. “I borrowed my dress,” says Maggie Kinnett. Like Hope, Maggie is a senior at Yorktown High School in Arlington. She got her makeup done without cost by a professional who is a family friend. Hope also cuts costs. She bought her dress online for far less than she would have paid in the stores. She also did her own hair. Besides, many girls choose to get ready for the prom with friends. They might get their hair done at a beauty shop together. They might hire a professional make-up artist for a few hours to share the costs. Probably the least costly thing about prom is the ticket to the dance. Yorktown held its event at a hotel in Arlington. The tickets were $ 45. 1、What makes Hope cheerful at present? A.The coming college life. B.The ball of high school graduation. C.Her attractive dress and curled hair. D.Her coming high school graduation. 2、Why did Maggie ask a friend to do her makeup? A.To save money. B.To get the best effect. C.To win a prize in the ball. D.To compete with other students. 3、What did Hope do to save money for the ball? A.She shared the cost of makeup with others. B.She rented her dress online. C.She did her hair by herself. D.She got the ticket for free. 4、What can we learn from the text? A.Renting gowns online for prom has become a trend. B.Prom has become a heavy burden for most families. C.The author is against prom due to the high cost. D.Prom has grown as a rising economy as wedding business. 23.(8分) March 3 marks World Hearing Day. This year’s theme is “Check your hearing!” Many experts and health organizations, including those who pay attention to the hearing-impaired (听力障碍), are working to help people realize the importance of protecting their hearing and avoid hearing loss. When we talk about music, what kind of feelings does it bring? Excitement… and relaxation. But what if the music lasts for hours? We interviewed a group of musicians based in Beijing during the weekend. They all said that hours of exposure to loud music can cause discomfort. One added that band members like to play at maximum volume (音量) and forget the harm that loud music can cause. The same thing not only occurs to musicians. It’s also not rare for daily users since listening to loud music on loud sound equipment has become a part of modem life. According to the WHO, the practice has put more than a billion people around the world, aged 12-35, at risk of losing their hearing. We also interviewed some headphone users in the street, and most of them said that they are not heavy users but admitted they use headphones for hours on the subway and in the office or home. It’s easy for these people to gradually increase the volume without awareness, especially in a noisy environment. Often, headphone users fail to realize they’re listening to audio at unsafe levels until serious hearing problems suddenly occur. There are many reasons for hearing loss, including loud acoustic (听觉的) sources, drug abuse, and diseases. Experts suggest frequent medical checks and prevention measures. Whether congenital (先天的) or acquired, loss of hearing is usually irreversible. “Once the hearing loss occurs, it’s already too late to be changed back to what it was before,” said Yang Shiming, expert of the Chinese PLA General Hospital. “Early prevention, early identification and early treatment. If everyone could do these things, hearing loss and its harm could be kept to a minimum,” Yang said. Of course, this applies to every one of us. 1、What might be a reason for hearing loss? A.Listening to music. B.Taking medicines. C.Ignoring sound pollution. D.Using headphones. 2、What does Yang Shiming advise people to do about hearing loss? A.Get rid of drug abuse. B.Make prevention ahead of time. C.Stop playing music in bands. D.Choose music with the help of musicians. 3、Which can best explain “irreversible” underlined in the last paragraph? A.Incurable. B.Unavailable. C.Unbelievable. D.Invisible. 4、What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Preventing Hearing Loss B.Reasons for Losing Hearing C.The Origin of World Hearing Day D.Raising Awareness of Protecting Hearing 24.(8分)A device that stops drivers from falling asleep at the wheel is about to undergo testing at Department of Transport laboratories and could go on sale within 12 months. The system, called Driver Alert, aims to reduce deadly road accidents by 20% — 40% that are caused by tiredness. Airline pilots can also use it to reduce the 30% of all pilot-error accidents that are related to fatigue. Driver Alert is based on a computerized wristband (腕带).The device, worn by drivers or pilots gives out a sound about every four minutes during a car journey. After each sound the driver must respond by squeezing the steering wheel (方向盘). A sensor in the wristband detects this pressing action and measures the time between the sound and the driver’s response ‘ Tiredness is directly related to a driver’s response time. Usually, a watchful driver would use about 400 milliseconds to respond, but once that falls to more than 500 milliseconds, it suggests that the driver is getting sleepy. In such cases the device gives out more regular and louder sounds, showing that the driver should open a window or stop for a rest. If the driver's response continues to slow down, the sounds become more frequent until a nonstop alarm warns that the driver must stop as soon as possible. The device has been delivered to the department’s laboratories for testing. If these tests, scheduled for six months’ time, are successful, the makers will bring the product to market within about a year. 1、Driver Alert is a device that can . A.keep drivers asleep. B.change drivers’ response accuracy. C.reduce the possibility of accidents. D.protect drivers when accidents happen 2、What does the underlined word “fatigue” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Illness. B.Tiredness. C.Carelessness, D.Impoliteness, 3、How does Driver Alert work? A.By being used as a nonstop alarm all the time. B.By squeezing the steering wheel on the way. C.By reminding or warning drivers if necessary. D.By being worn on drivers* hands every moment. 4、What do we know about Driver Alert? A.It must be fixed on the driver’s cars. B.It aims to prevent drivers from sleeping. C.It has gone through testing at laboratories. D.It isn't available to drivers at the moment. 25.(10分) These messages are posted to Homestay Web Hosts by guests throughout the world.Message board for advertisements from guests Message board for advertisements from guests Kanae Masuda * I will study Cantonese (粤语) in CUHK from this September.
