This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem—inability to read. In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my “secret sharer”, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical(相同的) to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos: the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer. Under the shade of a brush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. I never told my mother about my “miraculous(奇迹)” experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held. 1、The author’s mother told him to borrow a book in order to ________. To train the workforce of the future, companies around the world are wildly developing computing languages to introduce children to the appealing world of programming both in and out of school. The only drawback is that to learn or observe the results of their programming efforts, children have to be able to see. As a result, kids with limited or no vision (视觉) are prevented from participating in this exciting trend. To change that, researchers at Microsoft’s Cambridge, UK Lab have developed a new physical programming language that can be learned by all children. Project Torino allows visually damaged kids aged 7 to 11 to create code (编码) that plays music, stories, or poetry by connecting physical pods (检测装置) together. Once done, an accompanying app changes the physical code into digital code. The smart system covers all the major concepts and is ready to adapt to the needs of each student and set challenges based on the individual’s skill. Most importantly, it provides instant feedback, enabling educators to assess students’ progress and provide assistance as needed. The Microsoft team is currently developing the system further. Among the changes is adding color to the previously all-white pods because it helps children with limited vision to learn better. The size of the pods is also being increased since kids working in pairs were more engaged when they could both physically hold the pods and touch hands. The program will be expanded to 100 elementary school children in the UK this fall, and, once perfected, to kids across the world. While the system was created with visually damaged children in mind, Cecily Morrison, one of the researchers working on the project, hopes that it will appeal to everyone. 1、Why do companies introduce children to the programming world? A.To satisfy children’s curiosity. B.To develop children’s potential. C.To foster the future programmers. D.To make children more competitive. 2、What does the underlined word “that” probably refer to? A.The exciting trend. B.The drawback. C.Limited and poor sight. D.A physical language. 3、What is the advantage of the new smart system? A.It can help judge children’s progress. B.It bases the challenges on kids’ vision. C.Children with poor sight can see the code. D.It gives children guidance and instructions. 4、What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4? A.The size of the pods. B.The color of the pods. C.The Microsoft team’s hard work. D.The improvement to the new system. 23.(8分)The housing market in Canada has been in a dangerous situation. A recent news item said that the owner of two high-rise buildings of rental apartments had told his tenants (房客) that their rent would double in three months. Toronto doesn’t have rent controls to stop this sort of thing from happening. However, the politicians warn almost immediately that landlords (房东) should be careful because it could cause new laws to pass that they may not like. Tenants in the two buildings, meanwhile, are angry and some will have to move out because they simply can’t afford to stay. The next day another news story noted that the purchase price of a house in Toronto has jumped 33 percent this year, which might destroy the dream of owning a house for most young people. Both of these stories came out of Toronto but similar things are happening in Canada’s other major cities such as Vancouver, Ottawa, Montreal and Calgary. The cost of both home rental and home purchase is related to the supply and demand pressures of the market place and this is probably as it should be. The catch is that the rapid increase in both costs is far outstripping (超过) the increase in salaries, particularly in those jobs that beginners and probably even the majority of people can get. We can’t leave these people out on the streets. I think the expanding gulf between the haves and the have-nots that we are seeing in Canada is dangerous because when some people seem to have everything and others are next to nothing it can lead to desperation, depression and sometimes to violence. I doubt whether this phenomenon is limited to my country but it’s very concerning here. I feel sorry for the young people just entering the housing market. 1、Why do the politicians warn the landlords not to double their rents in the near future? A.They are kind-hearted men and feel sorry for the poor. B.They’ll have to raise the salaries for workers if rents are too high. C.It is cold in Canada, so it is dangerous to leave people on the street. D.The government will take measures to protect the interest of tenants. 2、That the writer thinks the housing market in Canada in a dangerous situation is because ________. A.Canada doesn’t have rent controls to stop rents from rising B.most young people take no interest in buying their own house C.the government are unable to provide the poor with free houses D.the problems caused by high rents may lead to serious social conflicts 3、According to the context, which of following word has the closest meaning to the underlined word “catch” in paragraph 4? A.Problem. B.Dilemma. C.Depression. D.Desperation. 4、What is the best title for the text? A.Beyond Most Buyers B.Tenants Will Move Out C.Toronto Is No Longer a Good Place D.To Help the Young or Not, This Is a Question 24.(8分) The new study shows that we spend more time using the mobile Internet than reading newspapers or magazines. According to the European Interactive Advertising Association (EIAA), the average European spends 4.8 hours reading newspapers and magazines but 1.6 hours more using the mobile Internet a week. The EIAA questioned 15, 000 people in 15 European countries, looking at how people are using the Internet and its influence on their everyday lives. It has found that the mobile Internet is increasingly finding its way into the public awareness. Over 71 million Europeans now have Internet access on their mobiles phones. In the UK, 10 million people now access the Internet through their mobile phones and spend 6. 3 hours doing so in a week. Unsurprisingly younger generations in the UK are leading the way, with nearly half of the country’s 16-to-24-year-olds and a quarter of 25-to-34-year-olds using the mobile Internet, spending 6.5 and 6.2 hours online each week. Entertainment plays a major role in our mobile Internet lives, with one in five British people using their phones for online games, a third listening to the online radio and 39 percent watching films, TV or other videos at feast once a week. One third of those using an Internet phone said they received videos, images or other multimedia on their mobile, and 61 percent said they passed on contents they received. From a communication point of view, 80 percent of those questioned agreed that the Internet had made it easier for them to stay in touch with friends and family. Alison Fennah, director of the EIAA, said the mobile Internet use had come to the point that marketers should be looking to develop strategies that connect with consumers more effectively. ‘‘Better devices as well as improved consumer motivation that start coming together in 2011 can make a great difference to extending the online experience.” Fennah said. 1、How long does a European spend on the mobile Internet per week according to the EIAA? A.6. 2 hours. B.6. 4 hours. C.4. 8 hours. D.1. 6 hours. 2、What do the words “doing so” mean in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.Reading papers and magazines. B.Playing computer games. C.Watching films online. D.Using the mobile Internet. 3、What do people mainly use the mobile Internet for? A.Communication. B.Study. C.Amusement. D.Advertising. 4、It can be known from the passage that _______. A.more than half of the young people in the UK use the mobile Internet. B.the Internet is the most effective way to stay in touch with friends and family. C.the UK has the largest number of people who use the mobile Internet in Europe.
