21.(6分)Australian scientists are trying to give kangaroo-style stomachs to cattle and sheep in order to cut the greenhouse gases they send out, which is thought to be responsible for global warming.
Thanks to special bacteria in their stomachs, kangaroo flatulence (肠胃气胀) contains no methane and scientists want to transfer that bacteria to cattle and sheep who produce large quantities of the harmful gas.
While the usual image of greenhouse gas pollution is a billowing smokestack, pushing out carbon dioxide, farm animals’ passing wind contribute a surprisingly high percentage of total emissions in some countries.
“Fourteen percent of emissions from all sources in Australia are from enteric methane from cattle and sheep,” said Athol Klieve, a senior research scientist with the greensland state government. “And if you look at another country such as New Zealand, which has got a much higher agricultural base, they are actually up around 50 percent,” he said.
Researchers say the bacteria also make the digestive process much more efficient and could potentially save millions of dollars in feed costs for farmers. But it will take researchers at least three years to isolate the bacteria before they can even start to develop a way of transferring it to cattle and sheep.
Another group of scientists, meanwhile, have suggested Australians should farm fewer cattle and sheep and just eat more kangaroos. And about 20 percent of health-conscious Australians are believed to eat the national symbol already.
It’s low in fat, it’s got high protein levels and it is very clean in the sense that basically it is free-range(放养的) animal,” said Peter Ampt of the University of New South Wales’ institute of environmental studies.
1、Scientists intend to put bacteria into cattle and sheep ________.
A.to help Australian farmers to earn more money
B.to prevent them from sending out harmful gases
C.so that they can protect Australian ecosystem
D.so that they can make full use of special bacteria
2、Athol Klieve seems to believe that _________.
A.farm animals are to blame for greenhouse gases
B.less cattle and sheep are raised in New Zealand
C.cattle and sheep produce less carbon dioxide
D.New Zealand has the most animals in the world
3、The advantages Peter Ampt lists about kangaroos don’t include ________.
A.it is rich in protein
B.it is low in fat
C.it is cheaper than beef
D.it is cleaner than sheep
4、The main idea of the passage is to ________.
A.discuss a better way to protect the earth
B.warn farmers of the danger of animal waste

Alanna Mallon is a Cambridge City Councilor.
Each year in November, I receive a flurry of emails and texts from friends who want to volunteer with their families on Thanksgiving as a way to give back. I also field phone calls from organizations who want to donate to local programs that provide Thanksgiving meals.
However, as an official who still works in the nonprofit sector, I also feel deeply anxious because I know the other 51 weeks of the year, these critical programs that provide food access to residents in need are starving for both volunteers and donations. Hunger is a year round problem, and each week volunteers are the necessary part to ensure that programs are able to serve the community.
At Food For Free, we rely on about 100 volunteers per week, and each of those volunteers is extremely important to providing fresh, healthy food to people in the Greater Boston area who need it. School children who take backpacks of food home on Fridays, community college students who rely on our Family Meals program to thrive in class, elderly and disabled residents who receive twice monthly deliveries of food to their doors through our Home Delivery program, — they all rely on us ensuring enough volunteers show up to do the work.
These volunteers don’t show up in your social media feeds, they don’t win awards and no one writes about them in the local newspapers. But they are heroes. And you can be too.
If everyone made a promise to volunteer once a month, or even once a quarter, I know that we could reduce some of the anxiety these organizations feel, as a more reliable volunteer network allows them to focus on helping people, not filling volunteer slots.
Here is a list of a few organizations who are doing critical work in Cambridge to address food insecurity. Offer your time to an organization, they will be deeply grateful—and I am going to bet that you will feel pretty good about yourself too.

A.The food safety worries the author.
B.Volunteers are needed all year round.
C.Donations can be made through the Internet.
D.People like getting together on Thanksgiving.
1、Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________.
A.the need for fresh food B.the duty of Food For Free

23.(8分)A bite from a tsetse fly is an extremely unpleasant experience. To make matters worse, several species of tsetse fly can transmit diseases. One of the most dangerous is a parasite(寄生虫) that causes "sleeping sickness".
After the initial bite, sleeping sickness symptoms often start with a fever, headaches and aching muscles. As the illness goes on, those infected become increasingly tired, which is where it gets its name.
It is worth noting that sleeping sickness is no longer as deadly as it once was. In the early 20th Century several hundred thousand people were infected each year. By the 1960s the disease was considered "under control" and had reached very low numbers, making its spread more difficult. But in the 1970s there was another major infection, which took 20 years to control. Since then, better screening programs and earlier treatments have reduced the number of cases dramatically. In 2000 this figure dropped to fewer than 3,000. The World Health Organization (WHO) hopes the disease will be completely removed by 2020. More problematically, a series of new studies have shown that the parasite is more complicated than previously believed.
Sleeping sickness has always been considered—and analyzed—as a blood disease, because the parasites can readily be discovered in the blood of its victims. However, in a recent study found that the parasite can stay in the skin and fat, as well as in the blood. There may even be a higher density(密度)of the parasite in the skin than in the blood. That means a person can have no symptoms but still both harbor the disease and spread it. The finding could explain the mysterious 1970s infection, and why the disease can spring up in areas that had previously been cleared.
1、What's the danger of a tsetse fly bite?
A.It makes people sleepy. B.It causes skin disease.
C.It brings about deaths. D.It transmits deadly parasites.
2、What can we infer about sleeping sickness from Paragraph 3?
A.It's still a threat to human health.
B.It's not that dangerous at present.
C.It's incurable in the early 20th century.
D.It's completely under control in the 1960s.
3、What does the underlined "harbor" most probably mean?
A.carry B.resist C.exchange D.hide
4、What does the latest research indicate according to the passage?
A.Sleeping sickness is a blood disease.
B.Skin is more suitable for the parasite to grow.
C.Sleeping sickness can be spread with no signs.
D.Parasites in the skin caused the 1970s infection.

Palp from Vancouver ★★★☆☆
Great one hour stop at the Suspension Bridge. The salmon bake in Liarsville was the best part! It was a buffet of UNLIMITED salmon that was being freshly cooked over an open fire. Overall good excursion, just a little too expensive for what it is.
Dragon from Los Angles ★★★★☆
Did this on May 1, 2019. Our guide, Glenn, was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable, keeping us entertained all the way by making jokes and explaining the history of the landmarks. There were only 12 people, so we all had window seats!! The views were GREAT! Took lots of pics.
Plutocrat from Edmonton ★★★★★
Enjoyed the drive, enjoyed the fees and enjoyed Liarsville, where the food was AMAZING. Can't believe how much we enjoyed walking across the suspension bridge.
Rod from Regina★★☆☆☆
“To the Summit” gives the impression you are going to the big summit. This was not the case. The summit in question was just a small hill. The views at the suspension bridge are ok but not incredible. The lunch at Liarsville was not bad, though, and that stop was best of the day.75、Which of the following shows the correct touring order in the excursion?
A.Skagway →Suspension Bridge → Klondike Gold Rush
B.Liarsville Trail Camp →Klondike Highway→Tutshi River
C.Klondike Summit →Suspension Bridge → Liarsville Trail Camp
D.Klondike Gold Rush →Liarsville Trail Camp → Suspension Bridge
1、After reading the four reviews, we learn that ______________.
A.Palp thought the price for the excursion is reasonable
B.Dragon thought highly of his humorous and learned guide
C.Plutocrat was not content with the food in Liarsville
D.Rod felt the view around the suspension bridge was great
