Here are some strategies for scoring a free upgrade. 1. Fly a lot. This is the most common way to earn a free upgrade. Most airlines reserve some space for travelers who fly at least 25,000 miles per year. Five years ago, this meant half or more of domestic (国内的) first class travelers sat up front for free. But now, airlines are selling more high price seats, so on popular routes it is not unusual for more than 40 travelers to compete for one or two upgrades. But on routes with fewer business travelers free upgrades remain more plentiful. 2. Use miles. If you’re not a frequent travelers but still have some miles banked, you may be able to use them for an upgrade. Be careful, though, as many airlines now ask not just for miles but also a cash co-pay. One example: On flights to Europe, American Airlines charges 25,000 miles, plus $350, for a one-way upgrade from discounted economy to business class. For most domestic upgrades, American wants 15,000 miles plus $75. 3. Get lucky. Sometimes airlines overbook coach, and a few travelers get no seats, only because no seats remain in back. Agents try to ensure the airline’s most loyal travelers get the nod. Sometimes Agents usually have some flexibility to make sure the plane is full and takes off on time. So it’s the easiest way for them to do it —they might upgrade someone else out of order. 4. Save a life. Flight attendants don’t usually upgrade passengers, even when empty seats remain. Doctors and nurses who answer an emergency call are sometimes an exception. If they comfort a passenger, flight attendants might allow them to sit in business or first class for the rest of the flight. 1、What might be the best topic for the passage? A.The best ways to get upgraded to first class. B.How to get on the flight safely and on time. C.The best ways to get free flight tickets. D.How to save a life on a plane quickly. 2、Who can have the chance to get a free upgrade? A.The person who always obeys the rules on the flight. B.The person who saves the plane immediately and safely. C.The person who is a friend of the flight attendants’. D.The person who travels for a long time and long distance by plane. 3、Why might medical personnel be allowed to sit in business or first class sometimes? A.Because they would like to talk with flight attendants kindly. B.Because they want to have a complete rest after a long journey. C.Because they need to treat passengers who are in emergent condition. D.Because they are tired of staying with common passengers. 4、Where can we find the passage? A.A life guide. B.A travel guide. C.A shopping guide. D.A pilot guide. 22.(8分)Welcome to the 2017 UK Festival Awards The UK Festival Awards & Conference is an opportunity to recognize the hard work, vision and creativity of the nation’s beloved festival industry. Throughout the day of the event, the Conference invites numerous industry insiders(行家) to discuss the issues most relative to the sector, reviewing its immediate past and portending to the future. The evening’s Awards present a wide range of honors across categories that are decided via a combination of public voting and professional judgments. Since launching in 2004 it has evolved into a major event at The Roundhouse in London, giving the industry a chance to collectively celebrate and fondly reflect upon the achievements of the past year. With a gourmet dinner, gala awards ceremony and after-show party, it attracts over 1,000 of the most influential people in the business. Along with its sister events, the UK Festival Conference and the European Festival Awards, The UK Festival Awards & Conference is owned and produced by Festival Awards Ltd, an independent company founded in the UK. Awards include Best Major, Medium-Sized and Small Festival, Best Family Festival, Best Overseas Festival, Best Use of New Technology, and of course – Best Toilets. As the festival season is approaching, we thought it’d be a good time to release our free UK Festival Market Report for 2015 / 2016. We gathered the data in our annual census(人口普查) undertaken in the preparation stage for last year’s UK Festival Awards. The latest UK Festival Market Report can be downloaded below. Included in the Report is a bunch of related information about festivalgoers: where they’re from, how they like to purchase music, what they eat, their attitudes towards ticket prices, how receptive they are to different forms of advertising, why they go to festivals in the first place, where they sleep, and much more. We hope you find the information useful. 1、Which phrase is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “portending” in paragraph 2? Merely bookish, I lacked a point of view when I read. Rather, I read in order to get a point of view. I searched books for good expressions and sayings, pieces of information, ideas, themes-anything to enrich my thought and make me feel educated. When one of my teachers suggested to his sleepy tenth-grade English class that a person could not have a "complicated idea" until he had read at least two thousand books, I heard the words without recognizing either its irony (嘲讽)or its very complicated truth. I merely determined to make a list of all the books I had ever read. Strict with myself, I included only once a title I might have read several times. (How, after all, could one read a book more than once?) And I included only those books over a hundred pages in length. (Could anything shorter be a book?) There was yet another high school list I made. One day I came across a newspaper article about an English professor at a nearby state college. The article had a list of the "hundred most important books of Western Civilization." "More than anything else in my life, "the professor told the reporter with finality," these books have made me all that I am." That was the kind of words I couldn't ignore. I kept the list for the several months it took me to read all of the titles. Most books, of course, I hardly understood. While reading Plato's The Republic, for example, I needed to keep looking at the introduction of the book to remind myself what the text was about. However, with the special patience and superstition (迷信)of a schoolboy, I looked at every word of the text. And by me time I reached the last word, pleased, I persuaded myself that I had read The Republic, and seriously crossed Plato off my list. 1、On heating the teacher's suggestion of reading, the writer thought . A.one must read as many books as possible B.a student should not have a complicated idea C.it was impossible for one to read two thousand books D.students ought to make a list of the books they had read 2、The underlined phrase "with finality" probably means . A.firmly B.clearly C.proudly D.pleasantly 3、The writer's purpose in mentioning The Republic is to . A.explain why it was included in the list B.describe why he seriously crossed it off the list C.show that he read the books blindly though they were hard to understand D.prove that he understood most of it because he had looked at every word 4、The writer provides two book lists to . A.show how he developed his point of view B.tell his reading experience at high school C.introduce the two persons' reading methods D.explain that he read many books at high school 24.(8分)Google announced new features to make devices smarter and more useful to open its yearly developers' conference. The announcements came at Google's I/O 2018 conference in Mountain View, California. Google Duplex "So what you're going to hear is the Google Assistant actually calling a real barber’s to schedule the appointment for you. Hello, how can I help you? Hi, I'm calling to book a woman's haircut for a client. I'm looking for something on May 3rd. Sure, give me one second. Mm-hmmm. That was a real call you just heard." Google Chief Pichai said the demonstration was the result of the company's research and development over many years in the areas of natural language, deep learning and text-to-speech. Google calls the technology Duplex. The idea is to create machines that sound and act more human-like in interactions with people. Continued Conversation Another new feature related to Assistant is called Continued Conversation. Until now, users have had to say "Hey Google" each time they asked a question or wanted help. But now, a user can issue more than one command – such as a follow-up question – for up to eight seconds, and Assistant will answer. Gmail Smart Compose The latest new tool for Gmail is an auto-complete feature called Smart Compose. It uses AI to suggest ways to finish sentences as they are written. For example, "I haven't seen you" might be auto-completed to "I haven't seen you in a while and I hope you're doing well." Digital Wellbeing Google says it recognizes many users are trying to find the right balance in life with technology. Sometimes they would like to break away from their devices to be able to spend time "on better things." New features with this in mind can help users prevent overuse of technology. A Dashboard will provide users detailed information about how much time they are spending on which parts of their device. When the device is placed face down, a new feature will put the device on hold and silence it so the user can center on other things. A Wind Down Mode feature can let users enter the time they want to go to bed. At that time, the device will again go silent and the front of the device will dim to help users disconnect before bed. 1、What does the small dialogue mean in Google Duplex? A.Google Chief Pichai calls his assistant to arrange an appointment for him. B.Google’s digital assistant sets a haircut appointment for someone all by itself. C.An assistant in Google sets a haircut appointment for a woman. D.That wasn’t a real call the receiver had heard. 2、What can we learn about Digital Wellbeing? A.It can find the right balance in work. B.It may automatically go silent while the screen is still bright. C.It can tell how much time is being spent on parts of the device. D.When one feature is operating long enough, a new one will disappear. 3、If you are poor in writing compositions, you probably like________. A.Continued Conversation B.Google Maps - Augmented Reality C.Google Duplex D.Gmail Smart Compose 25.(10分)New Way to Experience Dentistry Have you ever had your hand held during a dental procedure you feel uneasy about?
