The new app is called MyShake, which is the work of four researchers at the University of California. Berkeley. Smartphones are equipped with accelerometers(加速器). MyShake uses phone accelerometers to measure seismic (地震的) activity. It has been programmed to know the difference between normal activity and earthquake movement. The software developers say their app is right 93 percent of the time. A smartphone sends seismic information to the app developers. If the developers receive several warnings from one area, it recognizes that an earthquake may be taking place or will take place soon. Using information sent from the app, the network then judges the location and strength of the quake in real time. MyShake can record 5.0 earthquake at distances of 10 kilometers or less. MyShake uses very little power, according to its developers. Only when seismic activity is sensed by the app does it become active and sends data to the network. The app works best when your phone is resting on a flat surface, like a table. The developers hope that MyShake can add to information collected by the U.S Geological Survey. That U.S agency has created the Earthquake Early Warning System, also known as the EEW. The EEW has used sensors for measuring quakes in many areas. In places where no such equipment exists, MyShake may be the only method of early quake detection (发现). The app also shows ways to stay safer during an earthquake. The developers say it will become more effective as more people use it. The developers say they hope to add a feature that will warn people about possible tsunami after an earthquake. 1、The new app A.is a kind of accelerometer. B.feels earthquakes through smartphones. C.is developed by the U.S Geological Survey. D.predicts possible tsunami after an earthquake. 2、What is the second paragraph mainly talking about? A.How MyShake works. B.What seismic activity is. C.Why MyShake is developed. D.When accelerometers record earthquake. 3、We can infer that MyShake A.docs not work when the spartphone is in the pocket B.sleeps while there is no shaking of the earth’s surface. C.guides people how to survive when many people use it at the same time. D.recognizes an earthquake when it receive the information from other sensors. 4、The new app developers hope to A.use the information by the U.S Geological Survey to better MyShake. B.unite the U.S Geological Survey to combine the EEW and MyShake. C.help the EEW detect earthquakes somewhere. D.improve the EEW. 22.(8分) Food picked up just a few seconds after being dropped is less likely to contain bacteria than if it is left for longer periods of time, according to the findings of research carried out at Aston University's School of Life and Health Sciences. The findings suggest there may be some scientific basis of the "5-second rule"—the belief about it being fine to eat food that has only had contact with the floor for five seconds or less.Although people have long followed the "5-second rule",until now it was unclear whether it actually helped. The study, undertaken by final year Biology students and led by Anthony Hilton,Professor of Microbiology at Aston University, monitored the transfer of the common bacteria from a variety of indoor floor types as carpet, cement floor to toast, pasta, biscuit and a sticky sweet when contact was made from 3 to 30 seconds. The results showed that: time is a significant factor in the transfer of bacteria from a floor surface to a piece of food, and the type of flooring the food has been dropped on has an effect, with bacteria least likely to transfer from carpeted surfaces and most likely to transfer from cement flooring surfaces to moist foods making contact for more than 5 seconds. Professor Hilton said,"Consuming food dropped on the floor still carries an infection risk as it very much depends on which bacteria are present on the floor at the time." The Aston team also carried out a survey of the number of people who employ the “five-second rule”.The survey showed that: 87% of the people surveyed said they would eat food dropped on the floor,or already have done so.55% of those that would,or have eaten food dropped on the floor are women.81% of the women who would eat food from the floor would follow the "5-second rule".Professor Hilton added,"Our study showed that a surprisingly large majority of people are happy to consume dropped food, with women the most likely to do so.But they are also more likely to follow the "5-second rule",which our research has shown to be more than an old wives’ tale." 1、Which kind of food is not used in the study? A.Toast bread B.Italian noodles C.Chips D.Sticky candy 2、How did Professor Hilton feel after analyzing how many people chose to eat dropped food? A.Puzzled B.Upset C.Satisfied D.Astonished 3、According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE? A.Most men would follow the "5-second" rule. B.People who would eat food dropped on the floor are in the minority. C.Bacteria are easier to transfer from cement floors than carpeted surfaces. D.Food dropped on the cement floor is less likely to be polluted than that on the carpet. 4、What can be learned from the passage? A.The food which is dropped on the floor can be eaten safely. B.The research may provide some scientific evidence to the "5-second rule". C.The bacteria have no negative effect on the safety of food. D.People surveyed in the research are willing to accept the idea. 23.(8分)A business school in Paris will soon begin using artificial intelligence and facial analysis to determine whether students are paying attention in class. The software, called Nestor, is used in two online classes at the ESG business school beginning in September. The idea, according to LCA founder Marcel Saucet, is to use the data that Nestor collects to improve the performance of both students and professors. The software uses students webcams(网络摄像机)to analyze eye movements and facial expressions and determine whether students are paying attention to a video lecture. It then formulates quizzes based on the content covered during moments of inattentiveness. Professors would also be able to identify moments when students’ attention declined, which could help to improve their teaching, Saucet says. Advocates for AI in education say that the software is actually unable to teach a course, but the technology could be used as a digital tutor that would adapt to a student’s individual needs, and help develop more effective studying habits. Such software could also help teachers by providing feedback on the effectiveness of their teaching, advocates say. Saucet says Nestor won’t store any of the video footage it gets and that his company has no plans to sell any other data the software collects. In addition to facial recognition and analysis, the software can integrate(合并)with students’ calendars to suggest possible study times, and track their online behavior to pick up on patterns. Rose Luckin, a professor at the University College London Knowledge Lab, says AI could unlock the “black box of learning” by providing information on how and when learning happens. Luckin says a program like Nestor could be useful for students who take classes remotely, since “there isn’t a human there watching them.” And while some are concerned that AI may one day replace teachers, Luckin sees the technology more as an assistant, rather than a replacement. Saucet agrees. “Human contact is not going to go away,” he says. “There will always be professors.” 1、How does Nestor work to find out when students aren’t paying attention? A.By collecting the data of students’ performance in different classes. B.By collecting the students’ grades in the quizzes. C.By shooting and analyzing students’ eye movements and facial expressions.. D.By identifying moments when students’ attention declined. 2、Which is the benefit of AI education? A.It could be used exactly to replace a tutor. B.It helps student to develop more effective studying habits. C.The software is able to satisfy the requirement of a course. D.It could help teachers to give feedback on students performance.. 3、How does Nestor deal with the information collected from students? A.Nestor will use it to suggest possible study time to students’ schedule. B.It won’t store any video footage but facial expression. C.The company hasn’t expected to make profits by selling the data to other corporations.. D.Nestor will use it to keep track online of students’ behavior and punish them. 4、What is Rose Luckin’s attitude towards the replacement of teachers with AI? A.Objective. B.Approving. C.Indifferent. D.Opposed. 24.(8分) My favorite book, The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, talks about a formula called “SFF” which stands for “stopping finding faults”. I used to be a critical person and tried to find faults. I guess I somehow inherited this character from my father. Actually, many good qualities of my father are worth admiring except this. My father is the person who constantly looks for mistakes in other people and he thinks no one is perfect in the world. His character created a negative atmosphere in my family. I was the same as my father, so I often felt angry, disappointed, depressed, and lonely in school. After I had read my favorite book I began to seek “good things” in other people. It has completely changed my life. Now I feel happier, I have more friends, I have more trust in people, and I realize everyone has their own strength! Another important lesson I got from this book is that I should always behave myself in a positive manner. Let’s admit that we sometimes complain about our situation. That’s not good. “Believe it or not, people don’t like to listen to negative opinions.” One more valuable lesson I got from the book is that I should be a good listener. When I was younger, I only wanted people to pay whole attention to my words so that I could show them how important I was. I was very proud and would show off my achievements in school without considering others’ feeling. I had very few friends and most people considered me as an “arrogant” person. Now, I find it mush easier to make friends after making some changes! 1、Why does the author like the book The Secret? A.Because he’s found the secret of success from it. B.Because the book uncovers the secrets of happiness. C.Because he’s learnt his father’s characters from it. D.Because it helps him change his attitude towards life. 2、What do you know about the author’s father? A.He makes his son feel angry and disappointed. B.He likes finding faults with people around him. C.He seems a critical person but in fact easy-going. D.He can create a negative atmosphere when necessary. 3、The underlined word “arrogant” probably means “______”. A.self-important B.admirable C.troublesome D.cold-blooded 4、What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A.To persuade readers to be good listeners. B.To share his painful changing experience. C.To tell readers the influence of a book on him. D.To show the result of his father’s negative character. 25.(10分) Vehicles often come into conflict with other vehicles and pedestrians when their intended courses of travel intersect (交叉), and end up being in each other,s way. The general principle that establishes who has the right to go first is called “right of way”, or “priority”. It determines who has the right to use the conflicting part of the road and who has to wait. S
