21.(6分)It was a Friday morning, 7:30a.m. I felt too lazy to drive my car so I asked my son to book a taxi. In five minutes, the taxi reached the entrance gate, waiting for my arrival. I just saw the car number and entered inside the car. I was so busy that I didn’t pay any attention to the driver. I was searching for an important paper from my bag, so I said, “Please, go quick! I’m in a hurry!” The voice came, “Yes, Ma’ am!” I was surprised when I heard a female voice! I stopped my work for a second and looked at the drive. The driver was a young lady. Maybe, around thirty or thirty-two! For the first time, I saw a lady driving a taxi!
Hundred times, I had traveled in a taxi, but I never saw any lady driving a taxi, I didn’t know why I became so enthusiastic about knowing why she had chosen this profession. So I started the conversation, “If you don’t mind, can I ask you some questions?” “Yes, ma’am! No problem.” “I guess, you are well qualified!” “Yes, ma’am. I have completed my education. I have done my MBA course.” “Oh, my God! Why did you then choose this profession, instead of going for an academic career?”
She smiled and the way she expressed her views made me amazed! Very politely, she said “Driving was my passion (热情) from my childhood, ma’am! Of course I do respect each and every job. In this case, at least I fulfill my desire! I love driving! I don’t mind for a big or small job. I want a job where I can get satisfaction. I get offers from M.N.C but I prefer this one because I like it! I know, I can’t get enough money out of it, yet as I tell you ‘I love driving!’ That’s it.”

22.(8分) Our society is generally becoming one of giant enterprises directed by a bureaucratic management in which man becomes a small, well-oiled cog in the machinery. The oiling is done with higher wages, Nell-ventilated factories and piped music, and by psychologists and “human-relations” experts; yet all this oiling does not alter the fact that man has become powerless, that he is bored with it. In fact, the blue and the white-collar workers have become economic puppets who dance to the tune of automated machines and bureaucratic management.
The worker and employee are anxious, not only because they might find themselves out of a job; they are anxious also because they are unable to acquire any real satisfaction of interesting life. They live and die without ever having confronted the fundamental realities of human existence as emotionally and intellectually independent and productive human beings.
Those higher up on the social ladder are no less anxious. Their lives are no less empty than those of their subordinates. They are even more insecure in some respects. They are in a highly competitive race. To be promoted or to fall behind is not a matter of salary but even more a matter of self-respect. When they apply for their first job, they are tested for intelligence as well as for the right mixture of obedience and independence. From the moment on they are tested again and again – by the psychologists, for whom testing is a big business, and by their superiors, who judge their behavior, sociability, capacity to get along, etc. This constant need to prove that one is as good as or better than one’s fellow competitor creates constant anxiety and stress, the very causes of unhappiness and illness.
Am I suggesting that we should return to the preindustrial mode of production or to nineteenth-century “free enterprise” capitalism? Certainly not. Problems are never solved by returning to a stage which one has already outgrown. I suggest transforming our social system form a bureaucratically managed industrialism in which maximal production and consumption ends in a humanist industrialism in which man and full development of his potentialities – those of all love and of reason – are the aims of social arrangements. Production and consumption should serve only as means to this end, and should be prevented from ruling man.
1、By “a well-oiled cog in the machinery” the author intends to deliver the idea that man is ______.
A.a necessary part though the function of each is insignificant
B.working in complete harmony with the rest of society
C.an unimportant part in comparison with the rest of society
D.a irreplaceable component of society when working smoothly
2、The real cause of the anxiety of the workers and employees is that ________.
A.they are more likely to lose their present work
B.they have no real satisfaction or interest in life
C.they are confronted with the fundamental realities
D.they are deprived of individuality and independence
3、From the passage we can conclude that real happiness of life belongs to those _______.
A.who always live at the bottom of the society
B.who tend to be higher up in their social status
C.who prove better than their fellow competitors
D.who could dip far away from this competitive world
4、The author’s attitude towards industrialism might best be summarized as one of _______.
A.approval B.dissatisfaction C.suspicion D.sensibility
23.(8分)f cars had wings, they could fly and that just might happen, beginning in 2011.The company Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, says it plans to deliver its car-plane, the Transition, to customers by the end of 2011.
“It’s the next‘wow’vehicle,”said Terrafugia vice president Richard Gersh.“Anybody can buy a Ferrari, but as we say, Ferraris don’t fly.”
The car plane has wings that unfold for flying—a process the company says takes one minute—and fold back up for driving.A runway is still required to take off and land.
The Transition is being marketed more as a plane that drives than a car that flies, although it is both. The company has been working with FAA to meet aircraft regulations, and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to meet vehicle safety regulations.
The company is aiming to sell the Transition to private pilots as a more convenient and cheaper way to fly. They say it saves you the trouble from trying to find another mode of transportation to get to and from airports: You drive the car to the airport and then you’re good to go.When you land, you fold up the wings and hit the road. There are no expensive parking fees because you don’t have to store it at an airport—you park it in the garage at home.
The car-plane is designed to fly primarily under 10,000 feet.It has a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 pounds, including fuel and passengers.Terrafugia says the Transition reduces the potential for an accident by allowing pilots to drive under bad weather instead of flying into marginal(临界)conditions.
The Transition’s price tag: $194,000, But there may be additional charges for options like a radio, transponder or GPS.Another option is a full-plane parachute.
“If you get into a very awful situation, itis the necessary safety option,”Gersh said.
So far,the company has more than 70 orders with deposits.“We’re working very closely with them, but there are still some remaining steps,”Brown said.
