From climate change and gun violence to natural disasters, readers come across a story, learn about an issue and often feel compelled to help. However, without any guidance on how to make a difference, many abandon the attempt and move on with their day. Ideal Impact, a new Web-based app (应用程序), sees that as a lost opportunity. The app is designed to connect news stories with efficient ways to help make a difference in the real world. Let’s say, for example, you recently read an article, “The heartbreaking, world of captive (被抓的) exotic birds” and felt moved by the stories of the often sad lives those birds are forced to live. Once installed on your phone or browser, Ideal Impact would show you opportunities to volunteer, donate or get involved to help captive exotic birds. Founder, Olivier Kamanda, explains in the company’s video, “What would happen when you come across a story that makes you want to get involved in? That arouses a fundamental question, ‘How can I help?’ Unfortunately there is no platform that takes you from that moment of inspiration to a meaningful service opportunity. So every year 90 million people are inspired to get involved to do something with their time and they don’t know how. And that comes at a cost of 207 billion dollars in lost volunteer time and donations.” Kamanda said in an interview with the Smithsonian, “Our app bridges the gap between people who are inspired to make a difference and organizations that need support.” Once the app is installed as a browser plugin (插件) on a desktop or mobile device, you can read the news as you normally would. And then, when you come across a story that inspires you to take action, you can click on the Ideal Impact button that appears in the main menu of your browser. That will load the app and show you opportunities to get involved with non-profit organizations that are working to deal with the issue you just read about. 1、What is Ideal Impact? A.Its software. B.It’s a charity group. C.It’s a computer company. D.It’s a non-profit organization. 2、How does the author explain the function of Ideal Impact? A.By making comparisons. B.By giving figures. C.By giving quotations. D.By giving an example. 3、What can Ideal Impact do? A.It can help people make a contribution. B.It can help people search for exotic birds. C.It can help people read news stories more easily. D.It can help people make a difference to their career. 4、What will happen after you click on the Ideal Impact button? A.You will have fun news to read. B.You will find a solution to a problem. C.You may get access to a related charity. D.The main menu of your browser will appear. 22.(8分)It was Groundhog Day. A winter storm had hit overnight too. I tried to open my backdoor only to find six inches of wet, heavy snow piled up against it. I knew I had quite a job of shoveling out ahead of me, so I reached over to grab my snow shovel. It looked a lot more ready to work than I did. I sighed and pulled on my boots, gloves, and heavy coat. The wind chill was below zero and cut into my face as I slowly shoveled off my deck. After that I stayed my way over to my daughter’s house shoveling the path as I walked. It took a while to get her driveway clear and I knew I still had a lot to do. Next came the paths down the hill to my own cars covered in snow. I had grabbed the broom to sweep them off as well. I winced when the breeze blew the swept snow back into my face. Then I started to shovel out my driveways. My back was aching as I worked. I wished I could be building a snowman instead of shoveling. Winter sure had seemed a lot more fun when I was a boy. When I was done I examined my work. It didn’t look half bad. I smiled and looked at the woods covered in white. They were such a special sight. I leaned on my shovel and took it all in. Then I started up the hill with the snow shovel in one hand and the broom in the other. Suddenly, an urge came over me and I dropped them both. I spread my arms, fed back into the blanket of white and happily moved my arms and legs to make an angel in the snow. As you go through the seasons of this life take joy in your work. Take joy in your life. Remember that the course of your days rests in your own hands. 1、What’s the theme of the text? A.Enjoy winter work. B.Take things seriously. C.Take joy in your life. A.He was not satisfied with his work. B.He was absorbed in the snow sight. C.He was fond of making snowmen. D.He was in low spirits after work. 23.(8分) The secret to living longer could be as simple as picking up your walking pace, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Sydney found that walking at a brisk(快的) or fast pace was associated with a risk reduction of 24 percent for any cause of death. This effect was even more obvious in older age group, with fast walkers over the age of 60 reducing their risk of death by a surprising 53 percent. Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis, who led the study, explained, “A fast pace is generally five to six kilometers per hour, but it really depends on a walker’s fitness levels; an alternatives indicator is to walk at a pace that makes you slightly out of breath or sweaty.” In the study, the researchers looked at the results of 11 surveys from 134 to 2008, in which participants recorded their walking pace, as well as age, sex and BMI. The analysis showed that walking at an average pace was associated with a 20 percent risk reduction for all-cause mortality(死亡率) compared with walking at a slow pace, while walking at a brisk or fast pace was associated with a risk reduction of 24 percent. The researchers hope the findings will encourage the development of public health message about the benefits of walking pace. Professor Stamatakis added, “These analyses suggest that increasing walking pace may be a straightforward way for people to improve heart health and risk for premature mortality--- providing a simple message for public health campaigns to promote. “Especially in situations when walking more isn’t possible due to time pressures or a less walking-friendly environment, walking faster may be a good option to get the heart rate up--- one that most people can easily add to their lives.” 1、Who benefit most from walking fast? A.Cancer sufferers. B.The elderly. C.Those who have heart problems. D.Those who have high BMI. 2、What decides how fast a person can walk according to Professor Stamatakis? A.His/Her fitness levels. B.His/Her ages. C.His/Her will. D.His/Her BMI. 3、Why can walking fast reduce death rate? A.Most people like doing it. B.It benefits the heart. C.It reduces cancer mortality. D.Most people can do it easily. 4、What is the main idea of the text? A.Walking is easy exercise for people to do. B.Walking has received little attention until now. C.More and more people are walking fast for health. D.A fast walking pace can benefit people’s health. 24.(8分)There is no denying that some people live to be older than others. Followed arc the standard explanations: keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regular exercise, etc. But what effect does your personality have on your longevity (长寿)? Are there any kinds of personalities contributing to longer lives? A new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked at these questions by examining the personality characteristics of 246 children of people who had lived to be at least 100. According to the study, those who live the longest are more outgoing, more active and less neurotic(神经质的)than other people. Long-living women are also more likely to be sympathetic and cooperative than women with a normal life span. These findings are in agreement with what you I would expect from the evolutionary theory: those who like to make friends and help others can gather enough resources to make it through tough times. Interestingly, however, other characteristics that you might consider advantageous had no impact on whether study participants were likely to live longer. Those who were more self-disciplined, for instance, were no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open to new ideas had no relationship to Jong life, which might explain all those bad-tempered old people who are fixed in their way. Whether you can successfully change your personality as an adult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new paper suggests that if you want long life, you should strive to be as outgoing as possible. Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mother's personality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly 28,000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets. Patterns of childhood eating can be hard to break when we’re adults, which may mean that kids depressed moms end up dying younger. Personality isn’t destiny, and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But both studies show that long life isn’t just a matter of your physical health but of your mental health. 1、The purpose of the study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society is . A.to see whether people's personality affects their life span B.to find out if one’s lifestyle has any effect on their health C.to investigate the role of exercise in living a long life D.to examine all the factors contributing to longevity 2、What does the author imply about outgoing and sympathetic people? A.They have a good understanding of evolution. B.They are better at negotiating an agreement. C.They generally appear more resourceful. D.They are more likely to get over hardship. 3、What finding of the study might prove somewhat out of our expectation? A.Easy-going people can also live a relatively long life. B.Advantageous personality characteristics actually vary with times. C.Such characteristics as self-discipline have no effect on longevity. D.Readiness to accept new ideas helps one enjoy longevity. 4、What is the main idea of this passage? A.Anxiety and depression cut one's life span short. B.Longevity results from mental and physical health. C.Personality plays a decisive role in longevity. D.Health is in large part related to one's life style. 25.(10分)When was the last time you sent a postcard? The UK’s family-owned oldest postcard firm, which has been publishing postcards and calendars since 1880, will close this December. The reason? It says instead of penning a card, people are putting photos up on Facebook or Instagram or using WhatsApp to show friends arid family at home just how much fun they’re having. If you get a postcard from someone who’s away somewhere, it’s as much the thought that they’ve gone through the hassle(麻烦)of choosing a postcard, working out where to get a stamp from, finding a postbox and then the postcard making that journey through to you. That’s the value of the postcard. But that time has gone. Brothers Charles and Harry Salmon, the fifth generation of the family to run the firm, said the popularity of social media had had a huge impact on the business. People are also tending to take shorter holidays, meaning they are likely to have arrived home long before their postcards. As a result the business was no longer viable. “Increasingly challenging trading conditi
