As far back as the 11th century, “holidays”, especially the major feast days, were times of “celebration and amusement”, as the Oxford English Dictionary puts it. The number of holidays steadily increased during the Middle Ages, until a medieval Englishman would have had the luxury of 40 to 50 days a year off work, depending on where he lived, in addition to a free day on Sundays. During the Reformation, Henry VIII abolished most of the holidays partly because of the Protestant (新教徒的) suspicion of saints, but more practically, because, according to historian Eamon Duffy, “A large number of holidays were making the people poor by limiting agriculture.” The people took a different view and organized a protest march—the Pilgrimage of Grace—partly to protect their days off. Though at first the religious and festive senses of holiday were combined, the word gradually came to be used for any kind of relaxing break from work. As the word was drawing away from a religious society, the number of authorized holidays was reduced, until by 1834 most workers had only four official days off a year, in addition to Sundays. Many factory workers amplified this time by staying home on “Saint Monday” to recover from what they had gotten up to the day before. By the late 19th century, employers were compromising and offering half-day Saturdays, the beginning of the “weekend”, a term first used in 1879. In 1908, an innovative mill in New England gave its employees all of Saturday off, and the practice spread widely during the Great Depression as a way to keep employment up. It took 400 years, but finally workers could enjoy as many holidays as they had in the 15th century. 1、What was the word “holiday” originally intended for? A.Economy. B.Religion. C.Entertainment. D.Politics. 2、What’s the main reason for Henry VIII’s ending most holidays according to Eamon Duffy? A.His people required a thorough reformation. B.He didn’t believe in God and the saints. C.People took no interest in the agriculture due to them. D.Too many holidays stood in the way of the agriculture. 3、Which can best replace the underlined word “amplified” in paragraph 4? A.lengthened B.wasted C.shortened D.guaranteed 4、When did most employees get the whole Saturday off? A.In 1879. B.In 1908. C.During the Great Depression. D.In the 15th century. 22.(8分) Abraham Lincoln, a self-taught lawyer, was elected 16th president of the United States in November 1860, shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War. Lincoln proved to be a smart military strategist and a competent leader: His Emancipation Proclamation (解放宣言) paved the way for slavery’s abolition, while his Gettysburg Address stands as one of the most famous speeches in American history. In April 1865, with the Union on the brink of victory, Abraham Lincoln was killed; his untimely death made him a hero to the cause of liberty, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest presidents in U.S. history. On January 20, 1981, Reagan took office. Only 69 days later he was shot by a would-be killer, but quickly recovered and returned to duty. His grace and wit during the dangerous incident caused his popularity to soar. At the end of his two terms in office, Ronald Reagan viewed with satisfaction the achievements of his innovative program known as the Reagan Revolution, which aimed to motivate the American people and reduce their reliance upon Government. He felt he had fulfilled his campaign pledge of 1980 to restore “the great, confident roar of American progress and growth and optimism.” When George W. Bush, at the age of 54, became the 43rd president of the United States, it was only the second time in American history that a president’s son went on to the White House. John Quincy Adams, elected the sixth president in 1824, was the son of John Adams, the second president. While John Adams had brought up his son to be president. George Bush, the 41st president, insisted he was surprised when the eldest of his six children became interested in politics, became governor of Texas, and then went on to the white House. Barack Obama served as the 44th President of the United States. His story is the American story—values from the heartland, a middle-class upbringing in a strong family, hard work and education as the means of getting ahead, and the belief that a life so blessed should be lived in service to others. With a father from Kenva and a mother from Kansas, President Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. He was raised with help from his grandfather, who served in Patton’s army, and his grandmother, who worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle management at a bank. 1、Of the four presidents, who is regarded as an excellent public speaker? A.Abraham Lincoln. B.Ronald Reagan. C.George W. Bush. D.Barack Obama. 2、When Donald Reagan left the White House, he felt that ________. A.he regretted having been elected President B.he still had much to do for the country C.he had kept his promise to the people D.he was becoming more popular with the people 3、Which of the following presidents took office first? A.George W Bush. B.John Adams. C.John Quincy Adams. D.George Bush. 4、Of the four presidents, who successfully realized his American Dream? A.Abraham Lincoln. B.Ronald Reagan. C.George W. Bush. D.Barack Obama. 5、Of the four presidents, who was not able to finish his term of service? A.Abraham Lincoln. B.Ronald Reagan. C.George W. Bush. You can expect to experience a whole range of different conditions and scenery. This expedition is a total of 8. 27 km in distance and it actually enters the streams in the North of Ubin and exits in the South. Three and a half kilometers of pure mangroves(红树林), makes this the longest pure mangrove kayaking expedition in Singapore. The distance spent inside the mangrove gives you the maximum opportunity to witness wildlife within the mangrove ecosystem. Come experience the challenge of operating your kayak through the labyrinth(迷宫)of waterways and be amazed at the calm and quiet beauty of the wetlands. This last corner of natural wilderness in Singapore is so inaccessible, that very, very few have ever experienced it-which makes this a truly special program. Most Recent Traveler Reviews Traveler A: Traveled from bottom to top of Singapore in rush hour traffic in order to get to Ubin for a 9:30 start—only to find no guide there. Although, once he arrived, the guide was lovely—offering a very knowledgeable tour and lots of enthusiasm around a beautiful part of the world—our 6-hour kayaking trip was actually over before 2:30 pm, despite only hitting the water at 12 noon. Traveler B: The guides were nice, however the biggest disappointment was the timing. We thought we were going for a 4-hour kayak but were back in 2 hours and that included the prekayak safety talk. The mangroves are lovely but we were told that a storm was near. We felt that there had never been any intention of going out for longer. 1、What is special about the kayaking trip for travelers is that they ______. A.have a good relaxation by kayaking B.feel the challenge of kayaking C.enjoy the beauty of the wetlands D.experience the wonder of mangroves 2、Which of the following information is TRUE about the kayaking expedition? A.The time, distance and cost are referred to. B.The kayaking trip starts at 9:30 am and ends at noon. C.The distance spent inside the mangrove is 3.5 kilometres. D.The mangrove wetlands of Ubin lie in the south of Singapore. 3、Which is the common point referred to by the two travelers? A.The unpleasant weather. B.The shortened distance. C.The lovely wildlife. D.The guide’s service. 4、What can we learn from the passage? A.The safety of the kayaking travelers is not well guaranteed. B.The eco-system of Ubin nature reserve is well protected.
