A team of scientists announced on January 6, 2015 that they had identified eight planets beyond our solar system, three or four of which orbit in their stars’ “Goldilocks Zone” — the region where temperatures are not too hot or too cold for water, which is a necessary ingredient for life as we know it, to exist liquid form. This may be good news for people hoping that Earth is not the only inhabited world in the universe.
The scientists, led by Dr. Guilermo Torres of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, made the discoveries using data collected by the planet-seeking Kepler telescope.
NASA launched Kepler in 2009. Since then, the telescope has identified more than 1,000 planets outside of our solar system. Torres and his team analyzed the data about the eight newly discovered world to determine which ones are most likely to be similar to our Earth.
Among the new discoveries, the scientists say the planets called Kepler438b and 442b are the closest to Earth. Kepler 438b is just about 10% larger than our planet, and gets 40% more of its energy from its star than Earth receives from the Sun. Temperatures there would be about 140 degrees. Kepler 442b is about 33% larger than Earth, but receives 30% less energy from its star. That would make it a potentially chillier world than our own. Torres says it is possible for life to exist and survive in either of those temperatures, but for that to happen, these planets would need to have another key ingredient for life: a heat-trapping atmosphere like Earth’s.
While these findings add to the possibility that life exists beyond Earth, Torres cautions against drawing conclusions, “We are not claiming they are inhabited,” he says. In fact, these planets are so far away that the scientists cannot observe them directly, which can be explanation for why for now it remains unknown whether these planets contain life. But the discovery of planets in their stars’ habitable zones suggests that somewhere out there, some form of alien life may have taken hold.

22．（8分） Students should be able to show what they know. Many folks take this as an apparent truth. But I think it demands closer examination.
Possessing a skill or piece of knowledge is not the same thing as being able to show it. This is why many smart young people hate school. Understanding，figuring out，and getting a handle on a piece of knowledge is really exciting，but having to prove to somebody else that you understand is a pain in the neck.
Finding proof of student learning is a huge part of the teacher’s job，and whether it is done poorly or not makes all the difference in that teacher’s effectiveness. There is a huge difference between“how do I figure out if this student understands”and“how do I make this student prove to me he gets it”.The first is a valuable approach；the second is the first step on the road toward wasting everybody’s time.
And there’s the problem. If we start with the assumption that a student who knows must be able to show his knowledge to our satisfaction，we will be traveling down the wrong road. The more we demand that students prove to us that they know the stuff，the more we will design artificial tasks that demand a set of skills and knowledge entirely different from those we really want to measure.
As a classroom teacher，I have to remember that the burden（重担）is on me to find a way to see what my students know；the burden is not on them to put on whatever trained monkey show.
It may not be the worst thing ever to say，“Students should be able to show what they know.”But I think it’s far more useful to say，“Teachers should be able to discover what students know.”

Biologists at Tel Aviv University in Israel have found that flowers can act as a plant’s “ears” to help them detect the sound of approaching insects.
When the researchers played recordings of flying bees to evening primrose flowers, within three minutes the sugar concentrations in the nectar (花蜜) of its flowers increased. The fluid, produced to attract pollinating (授粉) insects, was on average 20 percent higher in flowers exposed to the buzz compared to those left in silence or exposed to higher pitched sounds. Professor Lilach Hadany, who led the study, said: “Our results document for the first time that plants can rapidly respond to pollinator sounds in an ecologically relevant way.”
However, Prof Hadany said a plant’s ability to respond to pollinators may be weakened in city environments or beside a busy road. While plants require water, sunlight and the right temperature to grow, it is widely believed they do not have senses in the way animals do.
But the study, published on the open-science website BioRxiv, suggests the efforts of gardeners who talk to their plants may not be in vain.“Plants’ ability to hear has implications well beyond pollination — plants could potentially hear and respond to herbivores, other animals, the elements, and possibly other plants,” Prof Hadany added.
A month-long experiment conducted by the Royal Horticultural Society in 2009 found female voices appear to speed up the growth of tomatoes. The research offers a possible explanation — women’s voices were at the right frequency for the plants to hear.
