And while that might seem obvious, there hasn’t been much research to prove the point until now. Some new studies by Rutgers University scientists support the idea strongly, and the experts go on to assume that flowers have flourished on this planet, with their beauty evolving in recent thousands of years, partly because humans are so attached to them. In a test, bunches of flowers were sent by florists to 113 men and women in a retirement community. All 113 got flowers and a notebook, but some got them earlier and received a second bunch when the others got theirs. By now you can guess the outcome. The more flowers, the more smiles. The results of the studies got the scientists to thinking about how the flower industry of today has evolved into growing things that serve no other purpose than emotional (情感上的) satisfaction. Nature won’t even pollinate (授粉) many of the domesticated flowers. Just among roses, there are so many types created by humans that, clearly, flowers aren’t what they used to be. But it’s likely our collective hand has played a role longer than you might think. Geneticist (遗传学家) Terry McGuire suggests that nature’s prettier flowers got to survive and develop well because people didn’t destroy them when they cleared for agriculture. Instead, they grew them and have been doing so for over 5,000 years. “Because they’re a source of pleasure, we take care of them. In that sense they’re like dogs. They are the pets of the plant world.” McGuire says. Here is one way that might have worked: Many species of flowers that are now planted used to grow only when the ground was disturbed, McGuire explains. “As humans moved into agricultural settings, these flowers would have been weeds.” “These flowers might have been tolerated because of their beauty. The seeds would have been preserved and replanted. Over time, the best of these flowers might have been selected and the seeds more carefully preserved.” 1、The underlined word “theirs” probably means ________. A.flowers B.notebooks C.flowers and notebooks D.a second bunch of flowers 2、Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE? A.We keep dogs because they make us happy. B.People grow flowers for thousands of years. C.The more flowers people get, the happier they are. She pulled off her quilt. “Ezra,” she said. “If I could just have some water,” she told him. He poured it from the water-pot. She heard no ice cubes clinking (叮当声); they must have melted. Yet it seemed just minutes ago that he’d brought in a whole new supply. He raised her head, rested it on his shoulder, and tipped the glass to her lips. Yes, half-heated —not that she minded. She drank gratefully, keeping her eyes closed. His shoulder felt steady and comforting. He laid her back down on the pillow. “DR. Vincent’s coming at ten,” he told her. “What time is it now?” “Eight-thirty.” “Eight-thirty in the morning?” “Yes.” “Have you been here all night?” she asked. “I slept a little.” “Sleep now. I won’t be needing you.” “Well, maybe after the doctor comes.” It was important to Pearl that she deceive the doctor. She didn’t want to go to the hospital. Her illness was pneumonia (肺炎), she was almost certain; she guessed it from a past experience. She recognized the way it settled into her back. If Dr. Vincent found out he would take her out of her own bed, her own house, and send her off to Union Memorial, tent her over with plastic. “Maybe you should cancel the doctor altogether,” she told Ezra. “I’m very much improved, I believe.” “Let him decide that.” “Well, I know how my own self feels, Ezra.” “We won’t argue about it just now,” he said. 1、(小题1)Where is Pearl in the passage above? A.In the hospital. B.Staying with Ezra at his house. C.At home. D.At a health clinic. 2、(小题2)Pearl has spent the night ________. It is the first time in over one hundred years that voters in this area of New Orleans elected a non-democratic Party lawmaker. And, Anh Cao is the first Vietnamese-American to be elected to the United States Congress (议会) . Anh Cao went through difficult times to get to where he is now. He was born in Saigon in nineteen sixty-seven during the war in Vietnam. In nineteen seventy-five, North Vietnamese troops took control of Saigon. He was separated from his family for many years. Anh Cao lived with his uncle in Indian, then later moved to Houston,Texas. He decided to work for social justice in a non-religious way. So, he worked as a lawyer in New Orleans. He joined the Republican Party and became active on local and state political committees. He decided to compete against his local representative in Congress, William Jefferson, who had been in office since nineteen ninety-one. Minister Jefferson's reelection campaign was not helped by federal corruption charges against him. Mister Cao won the election. That night he said that never in his life did he think he could be a congressman. He said the American dream is alive and well. 1、Which statement according to this news is true? A.Anh “Joseph” Cao was elected a Vietnamese-American Democratic party member. D.All the Candidates in New Orleans always supported William Jefferson 24.(8分)Here is a record of the discussion about AI (artificial intelligence) conducted by several scientists: Scientist A: I would say that we are quite a long way off developing the AI, though I do think it will happen within the next thirty or forty years. We will probably remain in control of technology and it will help us solve many of the world’s problems. However, no one really knows what will happen if machines become more intelligent than humans. They may help us, ignore us or destroy us. I tend to believe AI will have a positive influence on our future lives, but whether that is true will be partly up to us. Scientist B: I have to admit that the potential consequences of creating something that can match or go beyond human intelligence frighten me. Even now, scientists are teaching computers how to learn on their own. At some point in the near future, their intelligence may well take off and develop at an ever-increasing speed. Human beings evolve biologically very slowly and we would be quickly substituted. In the short term, there is the danger that robots will take over millions of human jobs, creating a large underclass of unemployed people. This could mean large-scale poverty and social unrest. In the long term machines might decide the world would be better without humans. Scientist C: I’m a member of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots. Forget the movie image of a terrifying Terminator stamping on human skulls and think of what’s happening right now: military machines like drones, gun turrets and sentry robots are already being used to kill with very little human input. The next step will be autonomous “murderbots” following orders but finally deciding who to kill on their own. It seems clear to me that this would be extremely dangerous for humans. We need to be very cautious indeed about what we ask machines to do. 1、What is Scientist B worried about? A.AI technology will destroy the earth. B.Robots will take the place of humans. C.Computers can’t think by themselves. D.Humans will be unhappy without machines. 2、What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to? A.I launched the campaign to Stop Killer Robots. B.We forget the movie image of a terrifying Terminator. C.“Murderbots” will be against humans’ orders. D.“Murderbots” can’t decide by themselves. 3、Which statement is CORRECT according to the record? A.The employment will be affected by AI technology in the future. B.Scientist A thinks AI technology will never develop. C.“Murderbots” will follow the orders of their manufacturers in the wars. D.All the three scientists agree that AI technology will benefit human beings. 4、Who agree(s) AI has more negative aspects than positive aspects? A.Scientist A. B.Scientists B & C. C.Scientist B. D.Scientists B & A. 25.(10分) Shark attacks not only disturb beach activities, but can affect associated tourist industries. Shark nets are a common solution to preventing shark attacks on beaches, but they cause dangers to sea ecosystems. Seeking a cost-effective way to monitor beach safety over large areas, we have developed a system called Shark Spotter. It combines artificial intelligence (AI), computing power, and drone (无人机) technology to identify and warn lifesavers to sharks near swimmers. The project is a cooperation between the University of Technology Sydney and The Ripper Group, which is pioneering the use of drones—called “Westpac Little Ripper Lifesavers”—in the search and rescue movement in Australia. SharkSpotter can detect sharks and other potential threats using real-time aerial imagery. The system analyses video from a camera attached to a drone to monitor beaches for sharks, send warnings, and conduct rescues. Developed with techniques known as “deep learning”, the Shark Spotter system receives imagery from the drone camera and attempts to identify all objects in the scene. Once certain objects are detected, they are put into one of 16 categories: shark, whale, dolphin, rays, different types of boats, surfers, and swimmers. If a shark is detected, Shark Spotter provides both a visual sign on the computer screen and an audible warning to the operator. Th
