21.(6分) A serious problem for today's society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their Lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a quashing of the system we want for our society.I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.
First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible, a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it may softer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs.
Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.
In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions.Furthermore, some institution should be created for senior daises, which can help provide a comfortable life for them.Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.
One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.
To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.

22.(8分)A new report comparing Australian high school students with those of 65 other countries show the nation is slipping further behind in maths and reading skills.
The 2017 Programme for International Student Assessment(PISA)measures the mathematics, reading and science skills of half a million 15-year-olds from around the world. It found Australian teens placed equal 17th in maths, equal 10th in reading and equal 8th in science. Asian countries like China, Singapore, Korea and Japan are pulling ahead of Australian students in maths and reading. The results show Australian students have slipped in maths performance by about a half a year of schooling compared to 10 years ago. The decline was stronger in girls than boys, with girls dropping to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD) average.
The report also found a wide gab between students in different parts of the country. Tasmania and the Northern Territory lagged well behind other states in all three areas. About 14,500 Australian students from 775 schools were measured in the assessment, which was conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER)for the OECD.
ACER’s director of educational monitoring and research, Dr. Sue Thomson, says gender, indigenous status and socio-economic status still divide student outcomes. Australian students from a wealthy background show a difference of about two-and-a-half years of schooling compared to a student from the lowest socio-economic group. Questionnaire responses have also found girls have a much more negative view about maths. Indigenous students are, on average, performing significantly worse than non-indigenous students, a difference of about two-and-a-half years of schooling or more in maths, science and reading.
Ms. Thomson also raised concerns that more than two-fifths of students failed to reach base proficiency levels in maths. “These are the levels which the Ministerial Council set as not really ambitious goals, but achievable goals for a country such as Australia, and a large proportion of students not to be achieving those results are quite a worry,” she said.
Twelve other countries also showed declines in maths literacy over 10 years, with the largest decline occurring in Sweden, then Finland, New Zealand, Iceland and then Australia.
1、According to the passage, the report _________.

3、What makes Dr. Sue Thomson so worried?
A.Two-fifths of students show no interest in maths in Australia

D.Nearly half of students cannot reach the achievable goals in maths

23.(8分)Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone.
The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences.
For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.
“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not robust under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration and substantial, relatively immobile setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.
“To mitigate the drawbacks…we created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn.”
The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate.
The sticker shows four grids of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.
Zhang’s research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May.(269)

24.(8分)I was in a taxi in Singapore last week and I couldn’t help but notice the sticker attached to the back of the driver’s seat. In English and Chinese it read, “We accept Alipay.” It was a reminder that e-commerce in China is no longer just about how great brands break into the Chinese market. It’s also about an important slice of China’s economy coming to you.
If you are a brand manager or a salesman, you’re increasingly likely to find yourself fighting with the push of Chinese e-commerce companies in your home market. That’s for two reasons: China’s leadership in electronic payments and the continued rise in Chinese tourism. The result of this is that Chinese consumers are an increasingly important factor in markets around the world.
On the electronic payment front, there are some strong reasons to introduce the electronic payment systems Chinese consumers are already using. In China, the traditional wallet has been replaced by an electronic wallet on a smartphone. It’s common to make all of your payments for daily needs through that smartphone, using one of the two main electronic payment providers: WeChat Pay or Alipay.
It’s not just easy to use. These two tech companies have the reach and customer base to push their payment systems beyond their original e-commerce mission. Noodle shops will take electronic payments, and even street musicians have QR for donations. Whether you are paying your electricity bill or seeing a doctor, your mobile phone can handle the payment.
As a result, China is today the most cash-free of any of the world’s major economies — and that trend will continue. Already, the numbers are staggering. According to a survey by Ipsos and Tencent, 14% of Chinese people do not carry any cash, while 26% hold less than RMB100 (less than $16) in their wallets, day to day. According to consulting firm iResearch, in 2016 China’s mobile payments hit $5.5 trillion, almost 50 times America’s $112 billion.

A.introduce the topic of the text
B.examine a problem in detail
C.offer some solutions to an issue
D.inform the finding of a new study
