U2 Heroes Lesson 1 Modern Heroes Teaching aims: To practise extensive reading in order to understand the main idea of each paragraph and guess the meaning of new words from the context. To get some detailed information about Shenzhou V and Yang Liwei. To talk about Yang Liwei and the space flight with the words learned. To learn from Yang Liwei’s spirit and understand the meaning of hero. Teaching difficult and important points: To find the main idea of each paragraph. To describe the movement of Shenzhou V. Teaching Aids: computer Teaching Methods: communicative approach, task-based reading, group discussion Teaching procedures: Ⅰ Lead-in 1. Show some pictures of different kinds of heroes and ask students to describe them with the key words learned in Warm-up. 2. Tell students that the above-mentioned are all heroes and then elicit another hero---Yang Liwei, the first Chinese to go to space. Then give a brief introduction of Yang Liwei and the series of Shenzhou spaceship. 3. Question: How do you feel about Yang Liwei and China’s first manned space flight? Ⅱ Pre-reading Learn some words about space flight: astronaut, spacesuit, capsule, rocket, launch, spaceship, helicopter, parachute Ⅲ While-reading 1 Fast-reading Task 1 Match the paragraphs with their headings. l Astronaut lands safely l Welcome home l International good wishes l An exciting lift-off l Introduction l During the flight Task 2 Circle some verbs about the spaceship’s movement in this article. Do you want to know more about the movement of our spaceship Shenzhou V? Let’s watch a short video about it. 2 Careful-reading Task 3 Fill in the blanks. Imagine one of you is Yang Liwei and the other is a reporter from CCTV. Make up an interview and ask as many questions as possible. 2 Free talk What should we learn from Yang Liwei? What's the significance of space exploration? Ⅵ Homework Now that you have known a lot about Yang Liwei and Shenzhou V. Do you admire him? What do you want to say to Yang Liwei?
