Lesson 1 Modern Heroes
Teaching aims:
To practise extensive reading in order to understand the main idea of each paragraph and guess the meaning of new words from the context.
To get some detailed information about Shenzhou V and Yang Liwei.
To talk about Yang Liwei and the space flight with the words learned.
To learn from Yang Liwei’s spirit and understand the meaning of hero.

Teaching procedures:
Ⅰ Lead-in
1. Show some pictures of different kinds of heroes and ask students to describe them with the key words learned in Warm-up.
2. Tell students that the above-mentioned are all heroes and then elicit another hero---Yang Liwei, the first Chinese to go to space. Then give a brief introduction of Yang Liwei and the series of Shenzhou spaceship.
3. Question: How do you feel about Yang Liwei and China’s first manned space flight?
