Firstly
The drought ended up being Yunnan's worst in a century, let’s see some digitals:
43.2%
In 2009, Kunming, rainfall is 571 millimeters, 435 millimeters than the historical average of less than normal, less than normal rate of 43.2% (provincial average rainfall rate of 29%), breaking the record of history, at least the same period.
84.7 thousand hectares
Since October 2009, the city's drought-hit crop area of 84.7 thousand hectares, 9.2 million hectares of dry paddy field, dry land lack of moisture in 16.2 million hectares, reaching the maximum for the same period since 2003.
410 million yuan
It is estimated that the current crop Yinhan causing direct economic losses of 272 million, vegetable crops Yinhan causing direct economic losses of 138 million yuan of direct economic losses totaling 410 million yuan.
530,000 people
According to statistics, there are 53 million people, 27 thousand head of livestock do not have sufficient access to drinking water.
Secondly
We all agree with that Water Splashing Festival a very important traditional celebration for Dai, Blang and Palaung ethnic minority groups. However, it is well-known that economic foundation determines superstructure, special cases should be dealt with in special ways. The urgent thing is to survive, if we don’t have enough water to maintain life, how can we splash water like this. Actually, they celebrate the festival to pray for a favorable weather in the coming year, they wish it could relieve the drought. If we still splash water without any scruples, we just violate its original intention. We have no right to deprive the right of other people to survive. At present, we should do our best to save water to get through this difficult period.
Thirdly
If you have seen the astonishing photographs taked in Yunnan province. your heart may bleeds for the people suffered from lack of water. Young children barely reaching the age of 10 carrying a piece of wooden bar on their shoulder, which was hung with a pair of pails of water; small kids cupping a bowl of squalid fluid and their face looked so innocent. The water in there was neither pure nor clean. It would be considered undrinkable by urban dwellers. The color was so dark and terrifying.
Some are trying their best to search for the water resource while someone else are trying their best to waste it. So why don’t we just keep this priceless water for saving lives? The right to live is more significant than any feast.
Finally
We oppose any actions of wasting water, however, we could celebrate the water splashing festival in other forms. In this special period, we could sprinkle little water instead of splashing water, we could wish each other the New Year's greetings in this way, blessing everybody with a happy life, good health and longevity. Splashing water is not all that the festival embraces as the celebrations, as there is also a fireworks display, the highly unusual drum-treading dance by elephants, peacock dancing and funfairs for people to enjoy. When we enjoy the fun of the Water Splashing Festival, we also save water.
