Flowers, ocean waves, animals, totem (图腾): Sitting in his northeast Beijing studio, Cai Honghao hammers
on a piece of cow leather, bringing to life a new design. Cai, 41, is one of China’s few leather crafters.
He began crafting leather six years ago when he was the creative director of an advertising company. Fed up
with the stress of his job, Cai declined to renew his contract last year. He is now devoted to leather crafting. “It’s
great fun as I try new designs and make it more challenging.”
Each work undergoes many stages, from drawing pictures on paper to coloring the crafted leather. He does it
all himself, but sometimes his wife helps. The back of the leather should be pasted on paper to prevent changing the
shape, and then covered with tape to seal it during coloring. Cai also sprays water on the surface to make the leather
easier to work. His 70-square-meter studio is filled with leather and tools. Pens are used to carve the outline of the
pattern, while different machines create the shallow holes on the leather. The patterns become vivid under Cai’s
hammers and shaping tools. For a bag or belt, he also sews pieces of leather together, and a work can take a week
to several months, with the prices up to tens of thousands of yuan.

“
It is an extremely complicated and time-consuming process,” he says. His shoulders can ache after bending
over his worktop day and night. “But I enjoy it, and my family are keen on my art. Otherwise, they would not let
me do this fulltime.” Cai hopes to realize the beauty of ancient Chinese paintings that are full of Chinese flavor.
“
Now my dream is realized,” he says. His next project is an exhibition of his work.

As Earth’s climate continues to change, a plant’s ability to adapt to its shifting environment is critical to its
survival. Often, to stay alive a plant must move locations by releasing its seeds, but plants are rooted in the ground
and cannot move themselves. Instead, they are dependent on animals or the wind to carry their seeds to a new location.
To better understand how plants can survive in the face of challenges like climate change, a team of researchers
at the University of-Missouri (MU) and Michigan State University recently cooperated to develop an innovative
mathematical model that can provide fast and reliable predictions of how far wind can carry a plant's seeds.
"Once seeds are released from a plant, we wanted to know how far they can go because as wind conditions vary
the seeds will be moved around differently as a result of various weights, sizes and shapes," said Binbin Wang, an
assistant professor at the MU College of Engineering. One advantage of the model is its ability to predict the
probability of where seeds might eventually land on the ground when winds are wild. “This model gives us an insight
into the probability of where a seed will land on the ground in different conditions depending on the seed type, the
plant type and the wind speed,” adds Wang.

“
Understanding how plants move as seeds year-round is critical for us to analyze how they’ll be able to handle
climate change. Besides, this movement is also important for how we can increase diversity in the ecosystem.” Lauren
Sullivan, a biologist and professor at Michigan State University, explained.
Instead of only making assumptions about how plants move, biologists are now able to partner with researchers
who can factor in aspects like aerodynamics and micro-meteorology (微观气象学). This innovative approach will
help them develop accurate models that are simple enough to make good predictions in just a short amount of time
in the future.
8
. What’s the function of paragraph 1?
A. To attract readers’ interest.
B. To bring up the topic of the text.
C. To introduce plants’ survival conditions.
D. To tell the author's views about climate changes.
9
. What is the mathematical model aimed for?
A. Monitoring plants’ growing process.
C. Solving the survival crisis of plants.
B. Predicting how wind conditions change.
D. Calculating how far wind can carry seeds.
1
0. What does Lauren Sullivan think of the movement?
A. It mainly depends on the wind speed.
B. It contributes to the protection of ecosystem.
D. It helps researchers evaluate the wind condition.
C. It plays a vital role in dealing with climate change.
1
1. What can we infer about the models in the future from the last paragraph?
A. They will be used in weather forecast.
B. They will be applied to analyzing plant types.
D. They will speed up the plants' movement.
C They will be simplified and work more efficiently.
D
The field of anti-ageing medicine has exploded in recent years due to discoveries about the fundamental
biology of ageing which are translated into experimental therapies (疗法) . The latest fountain of youth to pour
from the lab comes in the form of vaccines (疫苗) against age-related conditions— cancer, heart disease, dementia
and more. The first of these could be available by the end of the decade. All-purpose anti-ageing injections are also
in development.
The upsides of such vaccines are clear. Anything that limits the impact of age-related conditions on people
who live into old age—not to mention on the loved ones who often end up caring for them—has to be welcomed.
They also promise to lessen effect on the increasingly societal and economic costs of these diseases.
But as with all anti-ageing interventions, there are potential downsides too. If millions of people live
significantly longer, we risk a population explosion on a planet whose resources are already overstretched. If the
第 6 页/共 12 页
vaccines merely delay the beginning of age-related conditions, they will only postpone the burden on people and
society. And as Nobel prizewinner Venki Ramakrishnan told us earlier this year. a long-lived society is likely to be
an unmoving one. These are familiar fears. The common answer is that the goal is increased healthspan. That
means people living for longer, free from the diseases of old age, then suddenly declining and dying.
We won’t know the-outcome until: the therapies have been widely used, at which point it will be too late to
put the genie back in the bottle. But there is really no turning back anyway. If vaccines and other anti-ageing
therapies work and are affordable, they will be used. Besides, nobody would argue that innovations like antibiotics,
vaccines and advanced diagnostics were a bad idea even though they marked the beginning of our era of age-
related diseases. Similarly, we shouldn’t fear life-saving medical advances on the basis of unintended
consequences. If we can make lies longer and less painful, the downsides are a price worth paying.
1
2. Why is the field of anti-ageing medicine growing rapidly?
A. The biology of ageing is better applied.
C. The demand for longer life is increasing.
B. The trend of healthy lifestyle is rising.
D. The number of elderly is rising globally.
1
3. How do anti-ageing vaccines benefit society?
A. By increasing the workforce.
C. By boosting economic growth.
B. By curing people of diseases.
D. By reducing healthcare expense.
1
4. What does the underlined phrase “put the genie back in the bottle” mean?
A. To stop the process of ageing.
B. To erase the impact of the therapies.
C. To create a new medical breakthrough.
D. To delay the development of technology.
1
5. What is the best title for this article?
A. Can Anti-Ageing Medicine Really Work?
B. What Is the Risk of Anti-Ageing Medicine?
C. How to Stay Young with Anti-Ageing Medicine?
D. Is It Worthwhile Using Anti-Ageing Medicine?

A simple sheet of paper holds endless possibilities. ___16___ But if you learn a few basic folding techniques,
you could be making a variety of interesting objects. There’s a good chance that an expert folder somewhere has
made an origami version of almost anything you can imagine.
第 7 页/共 12 页
Origami is the art of folding paper into three-dimensional figures. They can be people, animals, and objects. The
word origami is Japanese. ___17___ Some historians believe that it was first practiced in China while others think it
was begun in Japan.
One of the most fascinating aspects of origami is how a simple sheet of paper can be transformed into something
beautiful and complex. Origami begins with sheets of special paper, usually six inches on each side. The paper is
generally white on one side and colored on the other side. ___18___
Beginners are often taught several folds and bases which are the starting shapes for other more complicated
figures. Some basic folds are the valley fold, mountain fold, petal fold, and reverse fold. ___19___ Once a folder has
learned these basic elements, he or she can progress to more complex figures.
