Well, a movie about this type of giant is coming to the big screen. Based on the beloved children’s story by Roald Dahl, Disney’s The BFG “tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and dangers of Giant Country”, according to Disney. The tall tale hits movie theaters in the US on July 1. The BFG begins when the over 7-meter tall Big Friendly Giant (BFG), played by Mark Rylance, takes little girl Sophie, played by Ruby Barnhill, from her London bed in the middle of the night. However, he does this for a good reason—he says that if Sophie told anyone that giants existed, armies would take him away for giving away the secret. The BFG certainly lives up to his “friendly” name—he refuses to eat humans like other giants do, and instead he stays alive by eating a bad-tasting vegetable known as a snozzcumber. The nine other giants in the movie, with names like Fleshlumpeater, Bonecruncher and Meatdripper, are twice as big as the BFG, “with teeth the size of tombstones”, as Variety magazine put it. Although the actors have been praised, the special effects may be the real star of the movie. Director Steven Spielberg wanted to make the movie when he made 1991’s Hook, his version of the Peter Pan story, but back then it would have been difficult to make giants look big enough. Now, however, “technology has finally caught up to the project’s ambition (宏伟目标)”, according to Variety. The We Got This Covered website was very impressed with the effects: “When you have the man who brought dinosaurs back to life 23 years ago in Jurassic Park and the incredible performance from Mark Rylance, you get something that feels believable and human.” All that’s left is for audiences to get to know the friendliest giant in all of literature when Disney’s movie finally makes it onto the big screen. 56. Why does the BFG certainly live up to his “friendly” name? A. Because he does what other giants do. B. Because his teeth are as big as tombstones. C. Because he is loved by children worldwide. D. Because he eats snozzcumbers instead of humans. 57. Spielberg didn’t make the BFG many years ago because at that time __________. A. he could spare no time B. he couldn’t find good actors C. it was hard to produce satisfying special effects D. he had no ambition for the project 58. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Dinosaurs appeared in the Big Friendly Giant again. B. Mark Rylance plays a role in Jurassic Park many years ago. C. The We Got This Covered website was set up by Spielberg. D. Audiences may have the chance to know the friendliest giant in literature. B Thirteen years ago, my brother died. I was living in Los Angeles, US, at the time. Before his death, I shot 14 episodes (集) of a TV series. I had saved a bit of money—enough for me to live for the next two years if there was no work. After my brother died, I was in pretty severe grief (悲伤). I remember putting one foot in front of the other—things needed to get done, tasks needed to be completed—but feeling terribly empty inside. Four years later, I had still not gotten a job. My savings had run out. In 2010, I began to think about rebuilding my life. The world seemed new and different. I wanted to start fresh. I was out walking my dog, Macarena, whom I had bought a year after my brother’s death. I had the feeling that if I could get control over my hair, I could get control over my life. My hair has annoyed me for most of my life. It’s huge, it’s curly and it has a life all its own. I have countless hair stories that could easily be horror stories! For example, once my young mother took me to get our hair done at a beauty school and the student stylist (发型师) gave me a cut that looked like a Mohawk (莫霍克族人). Now, you can see why mastering my hair was so important to me. It was something that seemed to have a life all its own. I immersed (使沉浸) myself in the world of all things about hair: I watched countless YouTube videos from a community of women who shared hairstyles and the best ingredients (成分) for hair. Theirs was a do-it-yourself community I was inspired by. I felt I had a unique voice to add. As I started to build a more loving relationship with my hair, I realized those curly coils (卷发) on my head were teaching me a lot about patience. That shedding (脱落) is an important part of the “letting go” process to make a way for the new. Our hair is the only part we can cut off, grow back, tease, color, curl and straighten. The one thing we can change at will to tell the world who we are. And I would never have known that if it were not for my hair. Now I am the captain of my ship; I am the master of my fate. 59. We can learn from the first two paragraphs that the author __________. A. was very sad about her brother’s death B. had no money left when her brother died C. saved a sum of money 4 years after her brother’s death D. shot 14 episodes of a TV series after her brother’s death 60. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that __________. A. the student stylist is good at cutting hair B. it’s fashionable to have a haircut like a Mohawk C. it’s hard for the author to control her hair D. the author and her mother both have curly hair 61. What does the author mainly want to tell readers? A. We can change our hair by following You Tube. B. A do-it-yourself community tells us who we are. C. The shedding of hair is the only way to show who we are. D. She knows she is the master of her fate after dealing with her hair. 62. Which is the best title of the passage? A. Fixing my hair first B. Adding a unique voice C. Feeling empty inside D. Living in Los Angeles C COLD-WATER SWIMMING The promise It will boost your immune system (免疫系统), burn calories and leave you with an all-natural high. Does it deliver? There’s no doubt swimming boosts aerobic fitness, reduces fat and increases muscle. Add icy water though, the risks may start to outweigh
