A recent report found 46% of parents agreed that their child knew more about the Internet than they did. And now new research shows parents are turning to their children for lessons in technology.
The new study of around 1,000 parents showed that 67% of parents have asked their teenager children for technology-related advice. 44% have asked their teenager for help using the Internet, and 41% have received teen advice about how to use the TV or home entertainment system.
Ahad Surooprajally, a father of five children, says his children help him with technology in the home. “They’ve grown up surrounded by technology,” he explains. “We have four computers and four iPads in our house. If I want to know something technical they're the ones I go to.”
He says his nine-year-old son Habeeb is the only person in the house who really understands the TV. So he tells Habeeb which film he wants to watch and Habeeb connects his mobile phone to the TV. “You teach your kids everyday life lessons, but the tables are turned when it comes to technology,” says Ahad.
As well as learning how to use technology properly, there is another advantage of parents asking their children to help them understand the digital world, They may be able to get a better understanding of what their kids are doing online.
Will Gardner of the charity Childnet International says, “We have to continuously encourage parents to find out more about what their children are doing on line. If the kids are using a social networking site, get them to show you around it if you are not using it already.”

On the Spanish island of La Gomera, kids are allowed to whistle (吹口哨)in class. In fact, whistling is required. The students are learning an ancient language called Silbo Gomero that uses whistles instead of spoken words. It's used only on La Gomera, which is one of the Canary Islands.
The people of La Gomera have used Silbo Gomero for centuries. For a long time, it was the best way to communicate across the island's rocky hills and valleys. An islander’s whistles can be heard from about 2 miles away.
But in the late 20th century, Silbo Gomero was in danger of dying out. Many of its speakers had moved from the island, and Spanish had become the main language. Cell phones had made it easier for islanders to communicate over long distances. A valuable piece of the island's culture was in danger of being lost forever.
In 1999, to keep the language alive, the local government made it a mandatory subject (必修学科)in schools. Now nearly all of the island's 22,000 inhabitants use Silbo Gomero as well as Spanish.
Though Silbo Gomero has been brought back into use, many other little-known languages around the world face a different situation.
There are more than 7,100 languages in the world. About half of them are in danger of disappearing within the next century. A language disappears when the last person to speak it dies. Many languages disappear because most children learn only the most important one. This is true even in the U.S., where Native American languages are dying because most kids are taught only English.
Many dying languages have never been written down. Some researchers are travelling the globe to record people speaking these languages in the hope of saving them from going silent.

Thomas Sterns Eliot was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 26, 1888. He was raised in a family that had distinguished(区别) Americans since colonial days. At 18 years old, T. S. Eliot entered Harvard, and after graduating he went abroad. Then he taught in a boys' school briefly before spending eight years in Lioyds Bank in London.
T. S. Eliot inspired the musical Cats in the 1980s from his well-known book Old Possum's Book of Cats. He also wrote The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufock in 1915. After 1915, T. S. Eliot wrote such poems as Portrait of a Lady.
The Waste Land appeared in 1922. It was considered by many to be his most challenging work. In 1927 Thomas Stems Eliot became a British subject(国民)and was confirmed in the Church of England.
His essays. For Lancelot Andrew(1928) and his poetry, Four Quarters (1943) increasingly reflected this association with a traditional culture. The Rock (1934), his first drama, was a pageant play. This was followed by Murder in the Cathedral (1935), a play dealing with the assassination of Archbishop(主教)Thomas a Becket, who was later praised.
