Are you a dog? Don’t be surprised. I don’t really mean that you really are the animal---dog. Here, it means,“Are you born in the year of dog?” Among twelve Chinese Zodiac(十二生肖)animals, dog is one of them. And 2018 is the year of dog. With the coming of the year of dog, I want to share some idioms (习语) about dogs.
Do you lead a dog’s life? I hope not. If we say someone is leading a dog’s life, we mean this person is very poor. Maybe he lives in a dog-eat-dog world, so it’s too competitive to make a living. If he wants to be successful or rich, he has to work like a dog. But if he works too hard, he will be dog-tired or even sick as a dog. However, hewill never give up, because he thinks every dog has its day. He believes that he will make it one day.
Have you experienced the hot weather in Chongqing during summer time? You may hope it rains cats and dogs.
The list of dog idioms goes on. These are only small part of it. Some of them have good meanings, while some have bad ones. Whatever they mean, always remember, dog is man’s good friend who can understand the human’s spirit. It follows its master, whether he is wealthy or not. We should treat it as our friend and family.

It is a sunny afternoon and 30 students, aged 9 to 18, have met at beekeeper Fuge’s home in Virginia Beach,US. Activities like this are a monthly event for the students, because they take part in the Beekeeping Club. They hear about the decline of the population of the honey bees, so they want to do something to help increase the number of them.
At the youth beekeeping club, Fuge, the owner, introduces the information of bees to children and their hives(蜂箱). “This is honeycomb (蜂巢). This is where they put eggs or honey,” he says. He also explains that one large female in the hive is the queen and produces some worker bees. These worker bees will make honey.
Next, it’s time to put on special suits to cover body and head, and the students help each other wear rubber gloves to prevent themselves from getting stung (叮咬). Then the group walks around white hives on the ground to have a close look at the bees.
All the students agree that this experience in the club is very meaningful. It helps them better understand how the bees work, so they may do more to save the bees in the future. There is a pair of ladies’ gloves at the bottom of my drawer. They are very old, even older than me, and they tell many life stories.
They belonged to my grandmother. When my cousin found several pairs of Grandma’s gloves, she sent me a pair. When the gloves arrived, they looked very new. It seemed that someone had carefully looked after them. They’re small, but so was my grandma, small but strong.
My grandma was a woman who needed strong hands to prepare bread dough (面团), cook dinner and clean wooden floors. And raising nine children and feeding those hungry workers from her farm field weren’t easy work. The hands that wore those gloves had looked after the sick, weeded (除草) gardens and washed countless dirty dishes.
When my grandma was young, women usually wore gloves when they went out. Wearing gloves was part of the dress code (着装标准). We can see the gloves everywhere in our old black and white photos. The gloves in my drawer put a lovely cover on the hands. These same hands fed the homeless people who sometimes knocked on my grandma’s kitchen door during the Depression (美国经济大萧条时期). They were also the same hands that sadly waved goodbye to her two sons going to war.
Grandma was a mighty(强有力的)woman. The story goes that she chased away a young man with nothing but her hands and a broom (扫帚). Because she thought the man was not good enough for one of her daughters. I remember myself being a little girl and seeing those small hands driving a big car. And when she played the piano, her hands could move up and down faster than your eyes could see them. She could play any song she heard, from classical to jazz.
These are my grandma’s gloves. Although they aren’t worth a lot of money, they’re certainly priceless to me.
