“He was a nightmare (噩梦),” his mother, Mary said as I talked with her and her son Jamie. “I was sure he was going to end up in prison, or worse”. Seeing Jamie so full of life with his new friends, there was no room for imagination that he was ever a rebellious (叛逆的) kid.
Jamie was raised by his mother after his father left ten years ago. They lived in a small flat with little money. Most of their neighbors were alcoholics, so crime was very common. At middle school, he quickly got in with the wrong crowd and began to steal everything from shoes to phones.
Mary didn’t realize the consequence of the trouble Jamie made until he told her he had been stopped from going to school for three weeks. Mary was very angry, but now she has realized that it was the best thing that had happened to both of them.
During the three weeks, Mary made him volunteer at the local community centre where he saw the street dancers for the first time. “They were so cool and able to express themselves in a way I had never seen before. I asked to join them and they agreed. Because of them I am who I am now.” Jamie told me, tears in his eyes.
Back at school, his whole attitude and behavior improved. “I realized the boys I was hanging out with weren’t cool, stealing wasn’t cool and getting out of school wasn’t cool either. It made me find something I love and have a goal in life.” he said.
Yes, street dance makes him happy. This kind of dance speaks to people, and gives them a purpose.

Certain animals know without analysis the difference between a number of objects and a smaller number. In his book The Natural History of Selbourne (1786), the naturalist Gilbert White tells how he surreptitiously removed one egg a day from a kind of bird Plover’s nest, and how the mother laid another egg each day to make up for the missing one. He notes that other kinds of birds ignore the loss of a single egg, but if more than one egg has been removed, they will give up their nests. It has also been noted that a certain type of bees always provides five—never four, never six—caterpillars (毛虫) for each of their eggs so that their young have something to eat when the eggs have hatched out. Research has also shown that both mice and pigeons can be taught to distinguish between odd (奇数) and even (偶数) numbers of food pieces.
These have led some people to think that creatures can actually count. They also point to dogs that have been taught to respond to questions about numbers with the correct number of barks.
Animals respond to quantities only when they are connected to survive as in the case of the eggs, or survive as in the case of food. They can “count” only when the objects are present and only when the numbers involved are small—no more than seven or eight. In lab experiments, animals which are trained to count one kind of objects were unable to count any other type. What interests them are the objects, not the numbers. Animals’ achievements simply are not equal to evidence of counting. They only show the results of clever, careful training.
25.The author refers to Gilbert’s book in paragraph 1 in order to_______.
A.support the idea that animals can count
B.show attitudes have changed since 1786

Blind imitation (模仿) is self-destruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth. Imitation appears attractive: to those who know their strength. Imitation is unacceptable.
In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first learned to cook, I used recipes (菜谱) and turned out some tasty dishes. But soon I grew bored. Why follow someone else's way of cooking when I could create my own? Imitating role models is like using training wheels on a child's bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them.
In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously (下意识地) hold poor role models. If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others.
In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors.
Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is not running out of material; it is what to do with the material knocking at the door of imagination.
Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not server. Then you can say, "I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors" tragedies and stories, and know that they are cheering on.
29. To avoid the bad result of imitation, we should _____.
A. forget daily fear and pain
B. choose the right example
C. ask others for decisions
D. stay away from stars
30. According to the author, the world moves on because of those who are _____.
A. desperate to insurance others with their knowledge
B. ready to turn their original ideas into reality
C. eager to discover what their ancestors did
D. willing to accept others' ideas
31. The trouble a creator faces is _____.
A. the lack of strong motivation
B. the absence of practical ideas
C. how to search for more materials
D. how to use imagination creatively
32. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?
A. To highlight the importance of creatively.
B. To criticize the characters of role models.
C. To compare imitation with creation.
D. To explain the meaning of success.

The college search doesn't have to begin and end with the Ivies and the name brand schools. 36 Here's some advice for trying to find the school that works for you.
Start with who you are and why you are going.
You need to examine yourself and your reasons for going to college before you start your search. Why, really, are you going? 37 What are your weaknesses? What do you want out of life? Talk with your family, friends and high-school counselors as you ask these questions. The people who know you best can help you the most with these important issues.
Your college does not have to be bigger than your high school.
College is a time to explore. 38 It is not the number of people, but the people themselves and the kind of community in which you will learn that really matters. Many large universities have established honors colleges within the larger university for these same reasons.
39
Think about the people in your life who are happy and successful and find out where they went to college. You will likely find that success in life has less to do with the choice of college than with the experiences and opportunities encountered while in college. So employers are looking for outstanding skills and experience, not college background.
You don’t need to pick a major to pick a college.
Very few high-school students have enough information or experience to choose a major. Most college students change their minds two or three times before they settle on a major, and they can still graduate in four years! 40
A. Being undecided will leave you open to more choices.
B. What are your abilities and strengths?
C. And a smaller community is more beneficial to exploration.
D. Do you need warm, familial support?
E. There are many schools to choose from, all worth your attention.
F. A brand-name college will not necessarily bring your success.
G. The most important factor in choosing a college is interest.
