Cars are lots of fun, but they could also be dangerous. We have to be careful when we drive them or ride in them.
It's always a good idea to put on your seat belt when you're in a car. Why? Think about this example: You put an egg on a skateboard and give it a push. If the skateboard hits a stone, it will stop, but the egg won't. It will fly through the air, hit the ground and break.
Now, think what would happen if you tied the egg to the skateboard. When the skateboard hits a stone, the egg won't go flying, it will stay safely on the skateboard.
Volvo, a famous Swedish car maker, was the first to use seat belts in 1849.
Air bags are also very important for car safety, because sometimes a seat belt isn't enough. If the car is going really fast and runs into something, seat belts could even hurt the people who wear them.
Most newer cars have air bags in front of and next to the seats. When a car hits something, its air bags will come out quickly – in less than one second – to keep the people inside safe.

A. they are made of strong materials B.they can stop us from hitting other cars

54. Air bags are also important for cars because they ________.
A. are made of plastic B. work together with seat belts to keep us safe
C. are put in front of and next to the seats D. can stop cars hitting each other
55. The best title for this passage is ________.
A. Useful Seat Belts B. Make Yourself Safe in Cars
C. Air Bags Work Well D. Egg on Skateboard

Xiong Jun is a Junior 2 student at Nanjing's Ninghai Middle School. On Saturday, Xiong didn't stay at home and watch TV. He was out in the rain near Nanhu Lake. He had some sticks and rope (绳).
Xiong tried hard to make the sticks stand up in the ground. He tied the rope to the sticks. Then he measured (测量) the rope between the sticks. His friend Liu Mengyi was with him.
"This part is 3.45 metres," Xiong said. Liu wrote it down. Xiong cleaned the mud from his pants, and they went to measure the next part. At each place, they got some lake water in a bottle.
Nine other students have also spent some free time taking bottles of water from Nanhu Lake.
They are all juniors, and they live near the lake. But their leader, Xu Dekun, is 72 years old!
"We do this to help make the lake beautiful and clean," Xu said.
Many years ago, Nanhu Lake was a nice place. But now it is very dirty. People throw lots of things into the water.
Xu's team started its work in August. After they take bottles of water from the lake, they test the water. They remember where each bottle came from. This way, they can find out which parts of the lake are the dirtiest.
They will finish their work in September. Now they are writing a report.
In the report, they tell how to keep the lake clean: Stop letting dirty water run into the lake, and put new plants into the lake.
Their testing is hard work. Sometimes, they even climb up high to take pictures of the lake. But 16-year-old Yin Jun thinks their work will be good for the lake.
"If you want to make things better, you just have to work hard," he said.
Lots of people are happy about their work. Lots of other students want to help them. Nanjing's government (政府) just gave them 8,000 yuan for their work.
"We'll use the money to buy some new tools," Yin said. "That will help us to do better work."

For years, it was the same old "one, two, three, four" during group exercises for students at Zhenguang Middle School in Guangzhou.
Students used to think their exercises were boring. But now, the school's 700 juniors have a fun, new way to do them.
To get students more interested in exercise, the school asked students to create (创造) a set of group exercises for themselves.
"The old ones were too slow and out of date (过时的)," said Wang Yi, a 14-year-old Junior 1 girl at the school.
Can you guess what kinds of moves Zhenguang students chose for their new group exercise? Some parts are like aerobics (健美操), and others are like the Para Para dance (芭啦芭啦舞)!
"The new moves are more lively than the old ones. They are better for juniors," said Li Yanbin, a teacher at Zhenguang.
During breaks or after class, students sometimes talk with their P.E. teachers about their exercise moves. If the students have good ideas, teachers might even make changes to the moves.
One student, Wang Yi, thought one of the body-turning exercise moves was too difficult, so she told her teachers. Teachers and students practised the move together after class, and finally they found an easier way to do it.
"Now it's a lot more relaxing," Wang Yi said.
Students don't just get to choose their moves now - they also decide what music to use during exercises. In the past, the music they used was always the same kind. But now, each exercise uses a different song. Students can take their favourite music to school and ask their teachers to use it for exercises.
"The music is so strong, you just can't help but dance to it," said Xiao Xiao, a 13-year-old girl in Junior 1.
