Lonely Planet’s Top Places to Go in 2024
Are you looking for inspiration for your next travel destination? Lonely Planet has published its
yearly list of top places to go. Whether you’re looking for adventure, culture, or value, there’s
something for every type of traveler. Let’s explore the top picks for travel destinations in 2024.
Top City: Nairobi
Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, was chosen for its unique music and dance culture, and impressive
local restaurants. Nairobi National Park, just a short drive out of the city’s central business district, is a
must see, where visitors can see over 400 species wandering the open grass plains while skyscrapers
twinkle on the horizon.
Top Sustainable Travel Destination: Spain
The publisher also recommended Spain for the country’s efforts to expand renewable energy, to
develop off-season travel, and to bring tourism to new destinations, such as the port city of Valencia,
easing pressures on hot spots such as Barcelona.
Top Best-Value Location: The American Midwest
The American Midwest, including the cities of Chicago and Detroit, is also on the list, as it
offers a high-quality travel experience at a reasonable cost. Visitors can enjoy excellent services and
facilities, such as old warehouses transformed into art studios, new eco-design hotels, and
Michelin-starred restaurants, without having to spend too much money.
Top Beach Destination: Donegal
Donegal, Ireland’s most northwestern county, has the country’s longest coastline and over100
beaches, where visitors can enjoy the highest sea cliffs in Europe and miles of beautiful coastal hiking
trails.

Influenced by factors like school funding, sports facilities, teacher resources and safety
concerns, traditional physical education was limited to static (静态的) scenes and closed gyms and

playgrounds, which lacked interaction and feedback functions. P. E. curriculum was also restricted to
basic sports like ball games, track and field and gymnastics. However, the emergence and application
of new technologies like virtual reality (VR), and 3D technology, greatly expand and innovate sports
scenes, providing possibilities for the construction of a flexible “on-site, on-campus, online” integrated
new sports world.
IT can build online virtual learning environments for students, creating teaching scenes hard to
achieve in the physical world. Many schools have already partnered with technology companies to
create different teaching scenes using digital sports products. The University of South Florida has
cooperated with the VR sports training company Sense Arena, allowing students to practice tennis on
its globally pioneering VR tennis training platform. Students use the Meta Quest 2 headset and VR
touching racket which imitates the weight and feel of a real tennis racket. The platform features 35
training modes imitating various scenes in real-life tennis matches, including crowd noise, dazzling
sunlight, shadows and wind. Athletes can engage in various forms of training, such as skill practice,
technical analysis and match imitation. Such a virtual sports teaching space further enhances the
experience of P. E. learning.
Technology-based physical education not only serves ordinary students’ physical health but also
addresses the needs of special groups in sports, especially students who cannot participate in regular P.
E. classes due to physical, psychological or social adaptation issues. Many schools offer specialized
sports programs to disabled students, like the “Pathways to Inclusion” program launched by the
University of Queensland, which tailors various sports activities to different disabilities, such as blind
football and wheelchair hockey. This is made possible with the support of sports technology, as
different symptoms require the use of different sports equipment.
Through scientific, healthy and joyful educational concepts, technology-empowered P. E.
classes convey the values of creating and enjoying a personalized experience, developing a sports
education where everyone participates and benefits.

Be honest: how often does your social media scrolling lead to shopping? And how many of
those things that TikTok made you buy did you actually need? Enter de-influencing, the TikTok trend
aiming to save our bank balances in the process.
De-influencing is the TikTok trend with hundreds of millions of views that’s challenging the
promotion around so-called popular products by telling you what you shouldn’t buy, instead of what
you should. It’s a response to a few different things, including a general feeling of over-consumption
and the cost of living crisis.
“
People are experiencing a general social media fatigue (厌倦) at the moment,” says makeup
artist and beauty content creator Rose Gallagher. “Originally, user-generated content was so popular
because people tended to share thoughts on things that they had purchased themselves with no real
connection to the brand. Now, with so much to be gained from giving a positive review, it has become
harder to tell the genuine reviews from those influenced by the potential for earning.”
How is de-influencing different from influencing? It sounds progressive, but once you scratch
the surface, there isn’t a huge difference between influencing and de-influencing. “It’s still influencing
but it’s telling people what not to buy,” says Kendall. While TikTokers may be warning consumers
away from expensive or well-known products, some continue to influence by telling consumers what
they should buy instead.
Being honest and authentic has the potential to pay off, too. While criticizing big brands may
reduce an influencer’s chances of landing a new deal in the short term, it also may increase their
long-term reach as they gain a reputation for being trustworthy. Sparking debates over whether a
product works or not can also drive sales for brands, as consumers respond by wanting to try it for
themselves.
What is different about de-influencing is encouraging consumers to take a moment to think
about whether they need a product and whether it’s right for them versus whether they’re simply being
influenced because it’s new, popular, or exciting. This is part of a bigger movement in beauty.

8.Why does the author pose the two questions in paragraph1?
A.To test readers’ honesty.
B.To present people’s doubts.
D.To give a warning against social media.
C.To introduce the topic of the passage.
2
9.According to the passage, which is NOT a factor that causes de-influencing?
A.An overall feeling of over-consumption.

B.The high cost of the tough modern life.
C.The increasing number of genuine reviews.
D.People’s behaviour of buying more than needed.
0.In what way is de-influencing similar to influencing according to the author?
A.Staying honest and authentic in face of profits.
B.Guiding consumers’ decisions on purchasing.

C.Warning consumers away from expensive products.
D.Leading customers to try products by sparking debates.
1.What does the passage mainly talk about ?
A. De-influencing is totally different from influencing.
B. De-influencing facilitates over-consumption and the cost of living crisis.
C. Don’t be influenced by new and popular products to save our bank balances.
D. De-influencing helps customers be honest and authentic to their purchases.

Although Sir Isaac Newton did not employ his reflecting telescope to uncover novel
astronomical phenomena, he did use it to completely transform how we view the world we live in and
the universe as a whole.
Reflecting telescopes use mirrors to bend light and enlarge images, distinguishing them from
refractors (折射望远镜) that rely on lenses. Their simplicity in construction and ability to achieve
much greater sizes than refractors have led to a transformation in our astronomical knowledge and our
comprehension of the universe.
As light passes through glass, various colors or bands are refracted at varying angles, leading to
chromatic aberration (色差) and consequently, distorted images when viewed through a lens. In the
time of Newton, the technology for producing glass and lenses was still very primitive, and the
challenges associated with chromatic aberration had not been adequately addressed. Today we can
make lenses that have almost no chromatic aberration but we can’t make them very large. As the size
of a lens increases significantly, it becomes extremely heavy, causing its own weight to distort the lens
and consequently ruin the image quality.
Newton’s telescope solved these problems. A mirror doesn’t allow light to pass. It simply
bounces all the light off the surface. This means there’s no chromatic aberration. Plus, because we
only need to bounce light off the surface, we can support the entire mirror on a base, reducing its
weight. This allows us to build much larger mirrors without any distortion.
While Galileo is credited with the discovery of moons around Jupiter and Halley with predicting
the comet’s orbit, what Newton did do was tie in mathematics, astronomy and our comprehension of
the universe through the use of his telescope and his universal gravitation theory.
The original telescope constructed by Newton is preserved and maintained by the Royal Society
of London. It is showcased in London and occasionally embarks on international tours as an element
of exhibitions.
