The beautiful harbour and world-famous icons are Sydney's appeal. Uncover the fascinating and unexpected side of Sydney's character, and learn more about her history with this guide. What's in a Name? It's hard to imagine now, but the city was originally going to be called Albion until Sydney, named after British Lord Sydney, was a more appropriate option. However, the name“ Albion” was not forgotten. Sydney’ s Albion Street, stretching from Elizabeth Street to Flinders, showcases an impressive number of historic buildings along its humble one-kilometer length. Wikipedia (维基百科全书) has a great list to plan architectural exploration in Sydney. Sydney Opera House's Design In 1973, the Harbour Bridge finally met its match with the opening of the Sydney Opera House. Its design reminds people of ship sails on the harbour and its building scale is quite huge. At 185 metres long, 120 metres wide, it has roof sections weighing up to 15 tons and over a million tiles on its extraordinary roof. It was completed ten years behind schedule on account of the budget blowout —— it exceeded (超出) its projected budget by over fourteen times. Sydney Harbour Bridge's Nickname “ The Coat Hanger” is the nickname for the landmark famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. It officially opened in March 1932, when many events were held to celebrate the completion of the bridge. Standing 134 metres above the world's deepest natural harbour, it is the largest —— but not longest —— steel arch bridge you can climb to enjoy the beauty of the whole harbour. Surprisingly, the top of the arch changes its height by about 180 millimetres due to temperature changes! 2 1. What can be learned about Sydney? A. It was called Albion in the past. B. It was named by British Lord Sydney. C. Its original name was more popular. D. It may attract visitors fond of architecture. 2 2. What led to Sydney Opera House being completed behind schedule? A. The loss of labor. B. The complex design of the roof. D. The grand scale of occupied land. C. The shortage of fund. 2 3. What can visitors do when visiting Sydney Harbour Bridge? A. They can be involved in many events. B. They can see the changes of the arch. C. They can reach high to overlook the harbour. D. They can climb to have a beautiful view of Sydney. B Jo Land, a 53-year-old teacher, was shocked when she realised how much her youngest son’s school uniform was going to cost. She said, “My husband and I are professionals, so we are not or the breadline. If it's hard for us, it must be harder for other families.” Land bought a plastic dustbin and put it outside her house, with a sign reading “School uniform drop-off”. She set up a Facebook group, Herefordshire Free School Uniform, and asked people to drop good-quality used uniforms into the bin. A pair of grey trousers appeared a few days later. The operation started to grow almost immediately. Some weeks she gives out up to 48 pieces of uniform. People drive up and drop the clothing in her bin. She sorts through it, keeps it in her spare bedroom and posts details about donations on the Facebook group. Recipients (接受者) can come and collect them. “They go without interaction with me, let alone financial hardship proof.” Land has also helped children living in social care and women's shelters. She estimates that she spends at least an hour a day processing requests and bagging up orders. Sometimes, she will respond to 30 Facebook messages in one day. Land has noticed that people rarely take without also giving. Sometimes people leave flowers on the bin, or they drop off some outgrown clothes as well, even if it's just a polo shirt or a few jumpers. She has never received soiled uniform. Everything is always really clean. She says, “I received so many messages from people who are absolutely desperate, because they can't afford uniforms for their children.” Her determination to ensure children can access the uniforms they deserve grows even stronger. 2 4. Why did Jo Land start Herefordshire Free School Uniform? A. To reduce the cost of schooling. B. To meet the needs of people in need. C. To promote people's awareness of recycling. D. To enhance the relationship in the community. 5. How can people get the school uniforms they need? 2 A. By fetching them by themselves. C. By posting an application online. B. By contacting Jo Land in person. D. By presenting proof of economic need. 2 6. What can we infer from paragraph 5? A. People donated brand-new clothes. B. Jo Land will continue her way to offer help. C. Jo Land will voice for those on the breadline. D. People are discontent with the quality of uniform. 2 7. What might be a suitable title of the text? A. Care for the Family on the Breadline C. Facebook Group Brightens People's Life B. A School Uniform Achieves a Dream D. A Single Dustbin Makes a Big Difference C It's a debatable composition in countless foods as well as beauty products, but what is the problem with palm oil(棕榈油) and can it be avoided? Despite being so commonly seen and highly demanded, palm oil is facing increasing rejection from environmentalists. As a vegetable oil made from palm trees, palm oil has long been considered a healthy oil. In spite of its higher price than others, time has seen its number grow rapidly and seen rainforests swept away in order to grow palm trees. It is estimated that an area equal to 300 football fields of rainforest is gone each hour to plant the palm trees. The destruction of rainforest brings about a series of horrible consequences. Greenhouse gases are produced when clearing forests. The lack of forest then also results in less carbon dioxide being removed from the atmosphere, making the practice doubly problematic. People and animals native to the forest are also displaced and many animals will not survive outside of their natural habitat. Worse still, plantation workers in Indonesia consider orangutans(红 毛猩猩) a harm and as many as 1,500 orangutans are killed in a single year. Having seen the first-hand effects of palm oil production, some environmentalists felt an urge to find substitutes(替代品). They tend to use products with no palm oil. However, some people still argue that palm oil is necessary as it has substantial production. They don't seem to understand that no crop can yield (产出) enough to justify such widespread deforestation and species wipe-out. Crops with lower production planted in less ecologically sensitive regions would be far more preferable. As the global demand for palm oil is increasing, more rainforests will be wiped out. There's no doubt that substitutes to palm oil are a necessary part of the sustainability issue. 8. Why do some environmentalists resist palm oil? 2 A. Because it is unaffordable to most families. B. Because it is much unhealthier than others. C. Because many rainforests were cleared to plant palm trees. D. Because the palm trees destroy the ecosystem of rainforests. 2 9. Why is orangutans in Indonesia mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To make a comparison. B. To support an argument. C. To arouse readers' interest. D. To illustrate an assumption. 3 0. Why are some people for palm oil? A. Because it is highly profitable. C. Because it can't be replaced. B. Because it has a wide range of uses. D. Because it bears a high output. 3 1. What is the suggestion offered in the text? A. Raising the price of palm oil. B. Advocating palm oil-free alternatives. C. Cutting down the demand of palm oil. D. Preventing palm tree planting on a large scale. D We already harvested energy from nature, like solar power and wind energy. But these green forms of power generation have limitations. The plants of power generation take up lots of space on land and are limited by the availability of light and wind. For example, solar farms don't collect energy at night and gather less of it in winter and on cloudy days. At present, scientists have found one approach to addressing it. The idea of space-based solar power(SBSP) —— using satellites to collect energy from the sun and “beam” it to collection points on Earth —— has been around since the late 1960s. Despite its huge potential, the concept has not gained sufficient concern due to cost and technological challenges. To be specific, SBSP enables us to acquire energy in orbit, which won't be limited by the onset of night. A satellite in geostationary orbit(地球同步轨道) is exposed to the sun for more than 99% of the time during a whole year. This allows it to produce green energy without a break. Besides, the ground station needed is smaller than the areas of land needed to produce the same amount of power using solar or wind energy. One study conducted by the European Space Agency found that SBSP could generate up to 10 GW of electricity by2050, one-quarter of the UK's current demand. 15 other countries have recently announced the intention to beam power to Earth by 2025, moving to larger systems within the next two decades. While an SBSP mission seems promising, Rand Maclain, head of the European Energy Agency think otherwise. He mentioned that while the electricity produced is fully green, the massive impact of the pollution from hundreds of launches is difficult to predict. Additionally, controlling such facilities in space will require substantial amounts of fuel. Servicing and refueling could also be extremely demanding. 3 2. What can we know about energy from nature? A. It needs enough space to store. C. It may be available constantly. B. It can be obtained universally. D. Its harvesting is influenced by climate. 3 3. Which does the underlined word “beam” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Transfer. B. Switch. C. Employ. D. Export. 4. What is the main idea of paragraph 3? 3 A. The challenge of SBSP. B. The application of SBSP. D. The great impact of SBSP. C. The great potential of SBSP. 3 5. What is Rand Maclain's attitude to space-based solar power? A. Negative. B. Indifferent. C. Favorable. D. Ambiguous. 第二节 (共 5 小题; 每小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 As the end of the year approaches, for many people, so do the holiday blues. Traditionally joyful and restful time of year can somehow produce the perfect storm of stress that can leave us feeling sad, disconnected and alone. 3 6 Many people do not feel part of the traditions. Those experiencing cold relationships from family members may struggle with the loss of connection and a strong sense of sadness during the holiday season. 37 . And there are still people struggling with painful memories from their childhood. Unrealistic expectations. Many people feel overburdened by expectations owing to endless media holiday advertisements. The over-commercialization and consumerism of the holidays leave many people feeling hard to meet unrealistic expectations of luxurious gift-giving and big family dinner. 38 Many people find themselves going into debt to meet unrealistic expectations . 3 9 . j If you struggle at this time of the year, consider approaching the holiday season in a new and positive way Set the intention to enjoy yourself and those you love in a way that suits who you are right now, like planning a special outing or getting together with friends. Realize that you can define how you spend your time. You can start by being kind to yourself, as well as to others. 40 Feeling being needed is a good way to lessen personal blues. If you celebrate the holidays, set reasonable limits on your spending and manage your time and efforts wisely. If you feel exhausted by
