一.阅读理解(共 25 小题)
1 .(2024•坪山区校级模拟) We travelled in Thailand. The staff at the hotels we stayed in went out of their way to make us feel welcome. You may say that they were just doing their jobs ,but this is not how it felt to us.At the iuDia Hotel in Ayutthaya the staff went above and beyond what we would have expected. The dining room was not open in the evening and when we asked where we could get a takeaway meal the front desk girl walked us to the nearby restaurant. She explained that the hotel staff would provide us with plates and dishes once we returned. Not only did they provide what we needed, but they also put our food in servicing bowls and took care of the clean - up while we slept. We were grateful and deeply touched by their kindness and care.
For the rest of our visit to Thailand we stayed at the Novotel in Rangsit.Since we were there for a long period of time we became familiar with a few of the staff. They paid attention to our needs and did their best to ensure our stay was a pleasant one. They were also happy to stop and chat with us ,asking questions about our stay ,what we had done that day ,recommending things for us to do and sharing parts of their personal lives with us.Again ,it may be said that their friendliness was part of their job but somehow,I did not feel that was the case.It felt natural, open and honest and I would like to think that they enjoyed our conversations as much as we enjoyed theirs.
On one of our walks my brother and I were offered bottles of fresh water by one of the locals. She felt that we needed it and did not want to take payment for the two bottles she offered. She finally agreed to take 10 Thai bahts (泰铢).Instead we gave her 20.

3 .(2024•雁塔区校级模拟)Dear Mr.Bran - son,
I truly love Virgin Atlantic ,which is why I continue to choose your flights despite a series of unfortunate incidents over the last few years. This latest incident takes the biscuit,though.Mr.Bran - son, look at the mustard. It was intended to accompany mashed potato. However ,here was more mustard than any person could handle in a mouthful. The potato masher had obviously broken , so it was decided the next best thing to do was pass the potatoes through the digestive system of a bird and blend it with "a bit" of mustard.Of course ,Mr.Bran - son , everybody likes "a bit" of mustard.
By then ,I felt a little sick ,and I needed a sugar hit.Luckily ,a small cookie was provided ,but it appeared to be some sort of backstreet underground cookie.Imagine biting into a piece of metal ,Mr.Bran - son. That would be softer on the teeth than this one.
Exhausted and starving ,I decided to resort to your world - famous onboard entertainment ,so I switched on the screen.Guess what ?It was incredibly hard to capture Boris Johnson's face through the flickering white lines running up and down the screen.I'd had enough ,but my only option was to simply stare at the seat and wait for

either food or sleep.Neither came for an incredibly long time.

4 .(2024•重庆一模) In July 1915 ,severely tortured by his poor health ,James Murray ,one of the early editors of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED),defined one final word. After his 36 years' dedication to the dictionary ,his hard labour had taken a toll , knowing he would not see the project complete.
The poetic quality of Murray's final days is one of the many memorable tales in The Dictionary People.Beginning in 1857 ,the OED was a huge crowdsourcing project - "the Wikipedia of the 19th century"
- comprising 3 , 000 people. The idea was to create a "descriptive" dictionary that tracked words' use and
4
meaning over time ,unlike its "prescriptive" 18th 一century predecessor by Samuel Johnson ,which told readers how to say and use words.Volunteers read widely ,mailing in examples of how "rare ,old 一fashioned ,new , strange" words were used. What is surprising about this fairly random method is that it worked.
The origin story of Sarah Ogilvie's book is almost as improbable as that of the dictionary itself.Ms Ogilvie,a former scholar who served as an editor for the OED ,went into the documents of Oxford University Press and came across an old notebook. It had belonged to Murray and contained the names and details of the dictionary volunteers , most of whom had previously been unknown. The Dictionary People is her work of detective scholarship ,bringing the lives behind the names to readers.
Ms Ogilvie's book is full of intriguing stories. The presentation of the book is unconventional, too, taking its structure from the work it describes. There are 26 alphabetical chapters ,each celebrating a group of contributors ( memorably , "K" is for "kleptomaniac" people who desire to steal). This is a clever arrangement ,though it sometimes means that broader issues emerge only in pieces.
Essentially, this is a story about ordinary people. It is concrete proof of those who,to cite dictionary 一helper George Eliot , "lived faithfully a hidden life ,and rest in unvisited tombs".

6 .(2024•诸暨市模拟) Whales are celebrated for being the largest and most intelligent creatures in the ocean. Now ,biologists have discovered that they also capture (捕获) tons of carbon from the atmosphere, a service with an economic value of US $ 1 trillion for all the great whales , according to a new study published by the International Monetary Fund. The study points out that protecting whales, normally viewed as a human good ,also has a monetary motivation.
"The carbon capture potential of whales is truly incredible ," said the report. "Our conservative estimates put the value of the average great whale at more than US $2 million ,and easily over US$1 trillion for the current stock of great whales." Whales absorb carbon in their bodies during their long lives ,some of which stretch to 200 years. When they die ,they sink to the bottom of the ocean ,taking the carbon with them.According to the study, each great whale traps around 33 tons of carbon dioxide on average.A tree during the same period only contributes to 3 percent of the carbon absorption of the whale.
Whale populations are today a smidgen of what they once were.It is estimated that there are slightly more
7
than 1.3 million whales in the ocean ,a quarter of their pre ﹣whaling number of 4 to 5 million. Some species in particular ,like the blue whale ,are only 3 percent of what they used to be. "We can create financial methods to promote the restoration of the world's whale populations ," said the report's authors. "Rewards could help those who pay significant costs as a result of whale protection."
With the Paris Agreement coming into force next year and the effects of climate change ever more widespread ,we must prevent the harm to whales.Researchers analyzed that unless new methods are put forward, it would take over 30 years to double the number of current whales, and several generations to return them to their pre﹣whaling numbers. "Society and our own survival can't afford to wait this long ," they said.
(1)What does the new study reveal about whales?
A .They are money﹣makers for good.
B .Their intelligence is unquestionable.
C .They are a natural climate solution.
D .Their survival is threatened by carbon.
(2)Why is a whale compared with a tree in paragraph 2?
A .To indi
