8. basics the most important part of something from which other things or ideas, etc can
develop 最基本的东西；基本要求
e.g. Reading is one of the basics of education.
If you really want to learn this, we’ll have to go back to basics.

1. awful
a. adj. used in order to emphasize how much of something is, or how good, bad, etc something is
极好的；极坏的；非常的；极……的
e.g. He took an awful chance. 他利用了这一绝佳机会。
I have an awful lot (=a very large amount) of work to do.
The room was an awful mess.
b. adj. very bad or terrible; unpleasant 讨厌的；不好的
e.g. an awful movie
This soap tastes awful.
c. adj. look/feel awful to look or feel sick
d. adv. very 非常
e.g. She is awful cute.
awfully adv. very 非常
e.g. He looks awfully sick.
I’m awfully sorry to wake you up.
You look awfully well this morning.

2. efficient adj. working well, quickly, and without wasting time, energy or effort 效率高的；有能力的
e.g. a very efficient secretary/organization
efficiency n. (uncountable) efficiently adv.

11. quite used together with a few, a bit, a little or a while, etc to show that an amount or number is large
e.g. She went away and was gone quite a little while.
We are not finished; quite a bit is left to do.
Quite a few people are waiting outside your office.

12. data n. (uncountable) information or fact 数据；资料
e.g. He is collecting data for his report.
The data is ready for processing.

13. academic
a. adj. relating to teaching or studying subjects such as science , English, etc, especially in a college university or institute 学院的；学术的
e.g. the academic year 学年 academic freedom 学术自由
b. n. teacher or student in a college or university; researcher in an institute 大学生；学者

14. comprehend vt. understand 理解
e.g. It’s difficult to comprehend what he meant.
comprehensible adj. able to understand 可被理解的
e.g. A book like that is not comprehensible to average students.
comprehension n. (uncountable) the ability to understand 理解力
e.g. You have no real comprehension of what it is like to be poor.

15. The less anxious and more relaxed the learner, the better their language acquisition. 学习者越不紧张， 越能放松自己， 学习习得的效果就越好。

The +(比较级)……, the +(比较级) 越……, 就越……。前者为比较状语从句， 后者为主句。
e.g. The more you think about it, the angrier you will grow.
The more, the better.
The small the computer (is), the faster it can work.

16. translator n. someone who change words or speech into a different language 译者
interpreter n. someone who changes the spoken words of a language into another 口译者

17. everyday adj. (attribute) used or happening daily
every day (adverbial for time)

18. patience n. (uncountable) ability to accept delay, annoyance or suffering without complaining 忍耐；耐心
e.g. I’m becoming to lose (my) patience with you.
After three hours of waiting for the train, our patience was finally exhausted.
patient adj. patiently

19. adopt
a. vt. formally approve and accept sth 采纳
e.g. a no-smoking policy has recently been adopted at work.
b. vt. begin to have or use 采用;接受并使用
e,g. They’ve been forced to adopt stricter rules.
c. legally have someone else’s child become a part of your family 领养
e.g. Susan was adopted when she was only two
