Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi moves into office

Emerging from decades of persecution, Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood saw one of its own seated Monday as president in the very office once used by the group's adversary former dictator Hosni Mubarak.

President Mohammed Morsi moved into the office while Mubarak remained in a hospital, having fallen ill since being convicted of failing to prevent deaths of protesters during last year's revolution that ousted him from power.

Morsi was officially declared Egypt's leader Sunday by the presidential election commission after a run-off against former Mubarak prime minister Ahmed Shafiq. On Monday, calm prevailed in Cairo and the Egyptian stock market surged.

"Today's (market) rally was driven by a sense of relief following almost a week of extreme tension ahead of election results," said Hany Genena, head of research at Cairo's Pharos Securities Brokerage.

Morsi met with the leader of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, whose military has been running Egypt and may continue to demand authority over many parts of the government.

For those waiting to see what the president will do first, Morsi has said his campaign will be based on the Renaissance Project of the Muslim Brotherhood. The project seeks to end corruption, restructure education, develop the private sector, and restore "Egypt's leading role in the region," according to the website of the Freedom and Justice Party, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The project also calls for Egypt to strengthen international accords "that will protect the interests of Egyptians internally and externally." The group supports Islamic law, but has yet to specify what that entails.

Iran's Fars News Agency reported Monday that Morsi told the organization he seeks to expand ties with Iran, which will "create a strategic balance in the region," and that Morsi will "revise" the Camp David peace treaty with Israel.

Morsi's camp, however, denied he gave the interview, and the new president said in a televised speech Sunday that he would respect international agreements.

"The controversy surrounding this interview has made an already difficult relationship between Iran and Egypt even more challenging," said Meir Javedanfar, Iranian politics lecturer at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya. "This is terrible news for the relationship because whomever is not telling the truth, be it Morsi or Fars News, it shows that there is a great deal of animosity."

The presidential powers of the 60-year-old, U.S.-trained engineer are limited at the moment. In a sign of a possible coming clash, the military council issued an addendum to the nation's constitutional declaration at the close of the run-off vote that gives itself control over matters that include the constitution and military affairs. Parliament was also dissolved.

Demonstrators protested Monday in Tahrir Square against the military's moves.

"His priority is the stability on the political scene," said Yasser Ali, a Morsi spokesman. He said the president was in his office to consult on forming a new government and choosing his team.
