The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the United States.It was a small coffee shop that roasted its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well, and by 1981 there were three more Starbucks stores in Seattle.
Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran（经营）Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. Between 1987 and 1992, Starbucks opened 150 new stores—and that was only the beginning. In fact, by the year 2000, three new Starbucks stores opened somewhere around the world every day!
Today, Starbucks has thousands of stores, including stores in twenty-six countries. One thing that helps make Starbucks succeed in cities outside the United States is the way Starbucks works with local stores and restaurants. By working together with a store already in the city, Starbucks gets an understanding of customers in the city. My favorite place was where my father was—prison. I know, how could it be anyone’s favorite place? But it was because my father was there. It would no longer be my favorite place once he got out, though—home will be.

He thought it would be good for the people in Fort Wayne to hear about this special third grader and her unusual wish.
The next day, a picture of Amy and her letter to Santa made the front page of the “News Sentinel.” All across the country, newspapers and radio and television stations reported the story of the little girl in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
During that unforgettable Christmas season, over two thousand people from all over the world sent Amy letters of friendship and support. Some of the writers were disabled; some had been bullied as children. Through the cards and letters from strangers, Amy felt a world full of people who truly cared about each other. She realized that being laughed at would no longer make her feel lonely again.
Many people thanked Amy for being brave enough to speak up. That year, that Fort Wayne mayor officially named December 21st as Amy Hagadorn Day throughout the city. The major explained that by being brave to make such a simple but unusual wish, Amy taught us a lesson.

One day a student was taking a walk with his teacher. As they went along, they saw a pair of old shoes lying in the path. They were a poor farmer’s, who was working in the nearby field.

“My young friend,” answered the teacher, “we should never make fun of the poor. His surprise was doubled on finding the other coin.
He couldn’t control his feelings and fell to his knees, looked up to the sky and expressed his thanks. Then he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread. He said the help would save them from dying.
The student stood there deeply moved, and his eyes filled with tears. “Now,” said the teacher, “are you not much happier than if you had hidden the shoes?”
