You can probably all ride a bike well. I’m an exception (例外).
I started riding a bike when I was three. It was a tiny toy bike with four wheels. I loved it very much and rode it every day.
When I was 5, my cousin gave me a pink bike. It was a true bicycle with just two wheels! At the time, my parents were too busy to teach me how to ride it. So I had to learn to ride by myself. I practiced hard on weekends and during vacations, although I still didn’t know how to make turns.
One summer vacation, I borrowed an old bike and rode it with my friends on a country road. We sang and practiced our riding skills. Suddenly, a small boy ran into the road. I was shocked and couldn’t control the bike at all. My bike ran into the boy and he fell. He didn’t get very seriously hurt, but his grandma was too angry to accept my apology. My cousin appeared five minutes later and saved me from the mess. But the experience frightened me: I no longer dared to ride a bike.
Then, last year, free bikes were offered to children. My mother tried to teach me how to ride. But the traffic made me so nervous that I had to ride really slowly. But I’m not going to give up. One day, believe me; you’d see me riding a bike in a big street.

51. What is the best title of the passage?
A. My experience of riding bikes. B. The bike I love best.

Dear Disney,
Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic Kingdom - Disneyland. And one event made our visit seem truly magical. We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldn't take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride.
Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff(员工) members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, "Promise?" Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride.
Sure enough, as we walked out the exit, there was Gloria's new friend with "her" ice-cream. Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won't last twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew' what time we would get off the ride; she went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out the exit. Gloria said, "Thank you," but I'm sure she thought it was the same ice-cream.
We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much for going above and beyond!
Your fan,
Carmen Rivera

The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the United States. It was a small coffee shop that roasted its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well, and by 1981 there were three more Starbucks stores in Seattle.
Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran(经营)Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, and he was curious about the company. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did, and he liked what he saw. He wanted to become part of the company. In 1982, the original(原先的)Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company’s head of marketing.
In 1983,Schultz travelled to Italy. The unique atmosphere of the coffee bars there caught his eye. To Schultz, it seemed that Italians spent their daily lives in three places: home, work, and coffee bars. His experience in Italy gave Schultz a new idea for Starbucks back in Seattle.
Schultz created an atmosphere for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Today, Starbucks has thousands of stores, including stores in twenty-six countries. One thing that helps make Starbucks succeed in cities outside the United States is the way Starbucks works with local stores and restaurants. I stop when I get to a garage-like place and walk to the metal door with brown paint. I turn the knob(把手)and walk in. A thousand eyes look at me as I take my place at the end of the long line. When I finally get up to the window, I hand the officer my ID. “I’m here to visit Mr C. Yes, I’m his daughter.”
The officer handed me a piece of paper with my name as the visitor and my father’s as the prisoner. It told me which floor to go to. As I get on the lift, a rush of excitement ran through me. Then I went to the eighth floor, looked around and saw the faces I saw here every Sunday and Thursday.
There he was. I stood on tiptoe(脚尖)to get a better view since I could hardly see him. He didn’t look like my father. He’d got a beard(胡子) now and he looked weaker. He was the dad that I saw through a window. My dad was separated from the world. The only place he now knew was his room in the prison. When I looked deep into his eyes, I see emptiness and pain.
It was difficult to hear him through the thick glass and over everyone else who was trying to talk. We tried to carry on a normal conversation about simple things including my day and what I was doing in school, but we mostly talked about how we couldn’t wait until he got out.
My favorite place was where my father was—prison. I know, how could it be anyone’s favorite place? But it was because my father was there. It would no longer be my favorite place once he got out, though—home will be.

One day, Amy was quiet at the dinner table. Her mother knew that things were not going well at school. That’s why Patti Hagadorn was happy to have some exciting news to share with her daughter.

Amy smiled. The contest sounded fun. She started thinking about what she wanted most for Christmas.
After dinner, she went to work on her letter. And the rest of the family tried to guess what she might ask from Santa. Amy’s sister, Jamie, and Amy’s mom both thought a 3-foot Barbie Doll would top Amy’s wish list. Amy’s dad guessed a picture book. But Amy wasn’t ready to make a wish like those.

One day a student was taking a walk with his teacher. As they went along, they saw a pair of old shoes lying in the path. They were a poor farmer’s, who was working in the nearby field.
The student turned to the teacher, saying: “we will hide his shoes, and hide ourselves behind those trees, and wait to see what he will do.”
“My young friend,” answered the teacher, “we should never make fun of the poor. Why not put a coin in each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch?” The student did so and they both hid themselves behind the trees. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes.
After putting on his coat, he put his foot into one of his shoes, and felt something hard. Then he bent (弯腰) down to feel what it was, and found the coin. Surprised, he looked at the coin, turned it around and looked at it again. He then looked around, but no person was seen. He put the money into his pocket, and continued to put on the other shoe. His surprise was doubled on finding the other coin.
He couldn’t control his feelings and fell to his knees, looked up to the sky and expressed his thanks. Then he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread. He said the help would save them from dying.
The student stood there deeply moved, and his eyes filled with tears. “Now,” said the teacher, “are you not much happier than if you had hidden the shoes?”
