Maybe it's because it was our first purchase as homeowners. The salesman must have spotted just how green we were, so he began persuading us. And soon he led us to a classic leather chair. All these years later, I remember he used words like rich and handsome, the thing every living room needed.
So we bought that chair—just less than $100, a great deal in the 1970s for a young couple!
How we loved that chair! It always occupied a place of honour in our various living rooms, moving with us from our first tiny house to our beloved new house.
Somehow, conversations were better on that chair, and life was more fun around it. Three daughters spilled their secrets on it. Old friends seemed to be attracted by it on those wonderful occasions. Crazy as it sounds, that leather chair seemed to have—well, powers. All for good.
At first, we didn't really care that the leather was showing signs of wear or that it had lost its sheen(光泽). But in our most recent move, when the chair was moved in our new living room, it suddenly looked terribly lonely sitting close to newly painted walls and a couple of shiny new tables.
My husband and I tried but still we couldn't ignore the rough spots. Our chair had a skin disease. Even our adult kids raised eyebrows, urging us to at least move the chair to some dark corner of the room. Neither of us could imagine such a retirement for it.
So we had an inspired idea. We'd call in an upholsterer(工匠) to give our old chair a whole new life. Our friend Joe studied the chair and then took out a simple leather conditioner. He explained that although it wouldn't work miracles, it would definitely get our weary chair looking younger again. It certainly doesn't look new, but its seat and back are shining.
Best of all, it's back in the living room, looking like a wise old friend to the furniture around it. And, yes, there it will stay.

All eyes were on Jack Ma. The chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. left his position on Teachers’ Day from leading the e-commerce (电子商务) giant he founded 20 years ago.
“I still have lots of dreams to go after.” Ma wrote in an open letter last year to announce his parting. “The world is big, and I am still young so I want to try new things.”
The 55-year-old businessman showed that he was ready for new things by arriving at his farewell party dressed up like a rock star.
In fact, his rags-to-riches (白手起家的) story is a good example of doing something different. Visiting the United States in 1995, Ma saw the internet and had the idea of setting up his own trading website. In 1999, he founded Alibaba with a group of friends in a shared apartment, struggling for years to get it off the ground. With all the challenges, the company slowly brought e-commerce to China.
Although his success has inspired a number of Chinese tech businessmen, Ma pointed out that the key is having a dream. “It’s the dreams that keep us full of confidence and never afraid of setbacks (挫折).” Ma said in a video posted on Sept 9.
Now the experienced businessman is looking to focus on education. What can he offer? I’m not going to teach English; I’m not going to teach business. But I’m going to teach young people how to face challenges.” he told Bloomberg News.

New South Wales, Australia, is setting up cameras as part of an effort to reduce the number of people preoccupied（全神贯注的） with wireless devices while they drive. It will be the first area in the world to use the technology to punish drivers distracted (分心) with telephone calls, social media or text messages.
Road Safety experts are concerned about the growing number of accidents involving drivers using smart phones on the state's roads. They say drivers who use phones while driving greatly increase their chances of being involved in an accident.
The New South Wales government plans to place 45 Mobile Phone Detection Cameras across the state by December. Each phone detection unit contains two cameras. One camera takes pictures of a vehicle's registration plate (牌照). A second camera looks through the front window of a car or truck to see what drivers are doing with their hands.
The units（装置） use artificial intelligence to set aside（排除） drivers who are not touching their phones. Human beings then confirm if the pictures show illegal behavior before notice is sent to the vehicle's registered owner. A violation (违反) carries fine of $232. Some cameras will be permanently set up on roadsides. Others will be moved, from time to time, around the state.
Two fixed cameras took photographs of 8.5 million vehicles as part of a six-month test earlier this year. The cameras took photos of more than 100,000 drivers with their hands on phones. One driver was using a phone and another electronic device, an Apple iPad, at the same time. Another driver had a passenger guide the vehicle while they both held phones, the state government said.
