Daphne Soares makes an amazing discovery about crocodiles（鳄鱼）based on curiosity. The investigation of the sensory dots of crocodiles began when she was at university. Now she holds a research position at the University of Maryland.
Daphne Soares has always been curious about how animals interact with the environment since she was a child. She keeps the interest all the time. She put more effort into her study, which made her finally receive a Ph. D. in biology from the University of Maryland. The first time she got really close to a crocodile was when she was helping to hold down an eight-foot American crocodile. When she got really close to the crocodile, she noticed that its face was covered with little black spots. This led to the discovery of the little black dots.
She started her study of the black dots when she went to the library. When she read the books and the scientific journals, she learned that people noticed the dots. People thought that the dots were some kind of sense organ. However, no one really knew what the dots were used for.
It was a complete accident when she found out what the dots were used for. She placed electrode（电极）on nerves coming from some of the sensory dots. When the nerves were fired, they sent a message to the brain and created a tiny electric current. When it happened, she heard a buzzing sound over an audio speaker. She tried to see if the dots acted like eyes and temperature sensors, but nothing worked. One day she accidentally dropped a tool into a crocodile’s tank. When she put her hand in the tank to get the tool out, she made ripples（波）in the water. When the ripples reached the crocodile’s face, she heard a buzz on the speaker. If you have spent any time reading blogs or papers on teaching strategies in the past few years, you have probably noticed a strong backlash against rote memory（机械记忆）, in favor of constructivist（建构主义的）activities and “project-based learning”.
The actual memorizing of facts, many agree, is an outdated educational practice, since anyone could search information on the Internet nowadays. They think that schools should focus constructivist activities on getting skills and knowledge.
However, learning by rote memory is more important than you think. There are many cases in which having knowledge immediately at the tip of your tongue can have great social and professional value. For example, last night at a networking event, when I casually asked a Nigerian businessman how much of his business was conducted in English against in his native Yoruba he immediately became more engaged in our conversation. It was a simple fact that speaking Yoruba in Nigeria seemed to increase my social trust, and therefore our relationship.
The same goes for professional settings. If I am a medicine salesman talking to a doctor about a specific digestion drug, and he asks if it has any effect on the process of peristalsis（肠蠕动）, it will look quite unprofessional if I have to pull out my medical dictionary to look up the word. Those facts need to be remembered in my brain so I can access them immediately!
Most situations need more personalized learning. Of course, most constructivist educators will argue that real-life simulations, on-the-job training, and project-based learning are more effective at learning new concepts than rote memory. The problem is that no single cost-effective constructivist activity will guarantee that you will be exposed to all the concepts you need or that you will fully remember the facts that you are exposed to. If you actually want to acquire a full range of knowledge about a given topic, the most guaranteed and efficient way to do so is to study by rote memory and practice time and again.

The two astronauts that were launched in the first private space vehicle to take people to the International Space Station are about to return to Earth—by splashing down in the waters around Florida. This will be the first planned splashdown for space travelers though a Russian Soyuz capsule did have to do an emergency lake landing in 1976.

The current plan for the Dragon “Endeavour” capsule to undock from the International Space Station is on Saturday at 7:34 pm, with scheduled splashdown on Sunday at 2:42 pm. There are potential splashdown zones both in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. However, with a hurricane heading towards Florida, it’s unclear whether the weather will cooperate with the plan. “We have confidence that the teams on the ground are, of course, watching that much more closely than we are,” said Behnken, “and we won’t leave the space station without some good landing opportunities in front of us and good splashdown weather in front of us.”
He said the astronauts could stay on the space station longer. “There’s more food and I know the space station program’s got more work that we can do,” said Behnken.
After the astronauts set off from the station, they can remain in the capsule for 24 to 48 hours before splashing down.
