21．（6分）Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.
A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart.
Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. When you sit with your legs crossed, your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic (骨盆的) bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck.
You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time, your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other, it causes pressure on the veins (血管) and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet.

A study found going without sleep for just one night causes changes in the brain similar to those that happen after a blow to the head. The researchers said the healthy young men examined in the study showed a sudden rise in the same chemicals which indicate(表明) brain damage. Professor Christian Benedict, of Uppsala University, Sweden, explained that the chemicals NSE and S-100B are biomarkers(生物指标) for brain damage, such as concussion(脑震荡). He said, “What we found was their levels in the blood rose in the group that went without sleep for a night. This was not to the degree that would happen after a head injury, for example, but it was still worth paying attention to. Professor Benedict also said his study could support previous studies which linked a lack of sleep with increased risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. The rise of the chemicals in the blood after sleep loss may suggest not getting enough sleep leads to a loss of brain tissue, he explained. Professor Benedict, whose study is published in the journal Sleep, added, “In conclusion, the findings of our trial indicate a good night’s sleep may be very important for keeping brain health.”
A third of the UK population suffer from sleep-related problems, while the average person now sleeps for only seven hours a night, compared with almost nine a few decades ago. Seventeen-year-old Maggie Mejia said that while she had no engineering experience, the girls figured out as a team how to create the prototype (雏形), using how-to videos and books that taught them how to code. But the most important lesson she's learned over the course of the project isn't technical. “I've learned a lot about helping others, helping the community and showing a better world to other people,” she said.
The girls have been invited to MIT to show their invention. Mardirosian says all the participating students have expressed interest in going into STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields and that students from lower grades are already expressing interest in being involved next year. She says, “Many of them didn't think about engineering before. They thought maybe they're not made out to be an engineer. But working together, now they realize they're all needed in this field. Everyone has found their importance in this picture.”
