Many schools have established successful home visit programs. Home visits by teachers let parents and children know how much teachers care. Also, it is a way for teachers to learn more about their students , get the parents to pay more attention to their children’s education and bridge cultural gaps that might exist between students and teachers. Most teachers report that their home visits have a lasting effect on the child, the parents and on parent—teacher communication.
The Head Start program has used home visits for many years. Head Start teachers are required to make at least two home visits for each student, regardless of their ability, during each school year in addition to regular parent-teacher conferences at school. Many U.S. kindergartens also require home visits by teachers before school starts.
The visit approach varies from school to school and usually depends on the funding the source. In some schools, teachers prefer to visit in pairs. They feel more comfortable that way and sometimes need a translator in order to communicate with a child’s parents. Other teachers visit one-on-one with parents. Some interact with both the child and the parent. Many teachers may bring along learning activities for the child that also involve the parents participation. Normally, visits can last from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the teacher and the activities.
When teachers get to know their students and their students’ families, the parents become more active in their children’s education. Home visits, not unnecessary as some people think, can give teachers the ideas they need to help all students succeed.

Family life is being disrupted because parents and children are overwhelmed by the huge volumes of emails and social messaging updates they are handling each day, according to a new study．As a result one in three of us are now desperate to cut down our use of Twitter and Face book as well as emails．
Surprisingly the study, by Cambridge University, found children as well as adults preferred to communicate face to face．More than half of all families said a "technology-free" time is important and a third of parents said technology had disrupted family life．The findings led family groups to warn that if parents end up spending more time checking emails and social networks than with their children, it could have a detrimental effect on the home．
Amongst children aged 10 to 18, who have grown up with new technology, 38% admitted feeling overwhelmed by the volume of messages．Similar numbers of adults felt the same way, with 34 per cent of 25 to 34 year olds agreeing．
Justine Roberts, founder of parenting website Mums net, warned: "Social media is something we have to keep a watch on because it can eat into your life．"
"We encourage our members to switch off because otherwise you can't give your kids and husband the time they need．" She added: "Websites like Face book and Twitter can be enjoyable and addictive but, like with everything, it needs to be taken in moderation．"
The survey also discovered that 43 percent of children and 33 percent of adults are taking steps to reduce their reliance on messaging, text and networking．But only one in five said they would be reducing the number of text messages they are sending and even less said they will be writing fewer emails．Nearly 43 percent said they have had a cull of their Face book "friends" and followers on Twitter in an attempt to cut down on the amount of time spent on the websites．
As part of the research, 63 families were asked to keep a diary of their use of communications technology．More than 1,250 adults were questioned in the research which was paid for by BT – the biggest broadband provider in the country．

A few cups of green tea each day may help prevent heart disease, Greek researchers said on Wednesday. A study published in the European Journal of Cardiovascular (心血管的) Prevention showed further evidence of the potential health benefits from tea already linked to a reduced risk of a range of cancers and other conditions.
The study showed that green tea improves blood flow and the ability of arteries (动脉) to relax, said Charalambos Vlachopoulos, an expert at the Athens Medical School in Greece who worked on the study.
Other studies have shown that black tea also has benefits for cardiovascular health.
The Greek team said they believed green tea might be even better because it had higher quantities of beneficial substances called flavonoids (类黄酮)-some of which are lost in the oxidation (氧化) process that black tea undergoes.
Flavonoids are also found in cocoa, tomatoes and grapes. "A couple of cups a day would probably be good for people," Vlachopoulos said. "This is the first study to show these effects for green tea."
The researchers gave 14 healthy volunteers either green tea, coffee or hot water and then measured the function of endothelial cells (内皮细胞)．These cells help relax arteries and ease blood flow. "What is important is these effects are evident within 30 minutes, "Vlachopoulos said.
The measurements taken 30, 90 and 120 minutes following consumption showed an almost immediate benefit among people who had drunk green tea, he said. While the researchers looked only at a short-term effect, Vlachopoulos said the team's studies suggest the protection is long-lasting.
"Green tea is consumed less in the Western world than black tea, but it could be more beneficial," he said.
