四、Reading Comprehension(共 4 道试题,共 40 分。)
1. A: What was your very first job?
B: When I left school, I sold double-glazing and I hated it. Finally, one of my customers lost her job
because her child was very sick and she couldn't go to work. The family had no money, so they
wanted to cancel the contract. My boss sued the customer. I thought it was awful that the company
only cared about money, so I resigned.
A: Why did you become a journalist?
B: I went to a local newspaper and asked for a job. The editor said, "Go and get me a story now". I
walked out of the office and by chance saw three police cars and an ambulance racing down the
road. I followed them and saw a big accident. At that moment another car raced round the corner,
ran over the two casualties and hit the police car which was stopping the traffic. I wrote the story
"Horror at Death Bend" and I got the job.
As a journalist the worst thing was that you were always looking for terrible things so that you could
report them.
A: Why did you give up journalism to sail full-time?
B: When I was in Moscow before the fall of Gorbachev, I listened to journalists who were excited about
the changes in Russia, and I knew it was time to give up. What I hated most was their excitement – I
was bored.
Anyway, shortly before that, I had started going out with another keen sailor. I was 45 years old. She
was much younger and we decided to sail off into the sunset.
A: Why did you start child minding?
B: After many long sea adventures and after our first child was born, I didn't want to go back to a proper
job. What I like most is that I am with our children all day, so I started looking after other children
whose parents went out to work.
A: Is it hard work?
B: Not too hard. The best thing is that the children usually amuse each other. Sometimes it's as chaotic
as war reporting! What I enjoy most is at 7.30 in the evening, the children go to bed and my wife and
I have a large glass of wine.
It doesn't matter that we hardly ever leave the village now. The most important thing for me is that I
am with my family and that I can watch my children grow up.
1). Why did he (the second speaker) give up his first job?

对的答案:A 满分:2 得分:2
3). Why did he give up journalism to sail full-time?
A. Because he thought it was toiling to travel to different places to seek news.
B. Because was bored with the fact that journalists took delight in reporting terrible things.

D. Because he had worked as a journalist for so long a time.

2. Benjamin Disraeli, the famous nineteenth century prime minister, said, "London is not a city, - it is a
nation." Today this is an understatement; London, with its vast range of different ethnic groups, is a
world.
Certainly, London is the most culturally diverse city in the world. The city was founded by the Romans
and since then new arrivals have constantly added to its character and prosperity.
Within 10 years 40% of Londoners will be from ethnic minority groups, including the growing number of
Londoners of mixed ethnic origin, but most of them will have been born in Britain. Children of
Caribbean-Chinese marriages will go to school with children of Russian-Irish couples. None of them will
be English but all of them will be Londoners.
Most of Britain's ethnic minority residents live in the capital, speaking over 300 languages. Nearly all of
the African population and many of the Caribbean population of Britain live in London (83% and 58%
respectively); 39% of the Chinese population of Britain and 36% of the Asian population of Britain live
in London. The largest migrant community is from the Irish Republic with 256,000 people, 3.8% of the
total population of London.
There are an estimated 330,000 refugees and asylum seekers living in London, with most recent arrivals
coming from Eastern Europe, North Africa and Kurdistan.
Young people, in particular, are skilled at dealing with a large number of different and hybrid cultures.
They themselves often have several different ethnic identities since their parents and grandparents may
come from several different backgrounds and their friends and partners do also. They are "skilled
cross-cultural travellers" without leaving their home-town.
1). Why does the writer think that Benjamin Disraeli's statement is an understatement? Because he

thinks London is _________.
A. part of the world
B. even larger than some countries in the world
C. not a nation at all
D. a miniature world thanks to its great cultural diversity
对的答案:D 满分:2 得分:2
2). Why does the writer think new arrivals are an advantage to London?
A. Because they have regularly increased its character and prosperity.
B. Because they speak different languages.
C. Because they are superior to Londoners in many aspects.
D. Because they are unique ethnic minority groups.
对的答案:A 满分:2 得分:2
3). London is regarded as the most culturally diverse city in the world due to the following facts

EXCEPT that _________.
A. within 10 years 40% Londoners will be from ethnic minority groups
B. most of Britain's ethnic minority residents live in London, speaking over 300 languages
C. London accommodates about 330,000 refugees and asylum seekers from many other countries
D. many young people are immigrants from different backgrounds
对的答案:D 满分:2 得分:2
4). The last paragraph mainly tells us in London _________.
A. young people are from different backgrounds
B. young people are raised in a multicultural environment
C. young people find it hard to adapt themselves to hybrid cultures
D. young people feel at ease with a large number of diversified cultures
对的答案:D 满分:2 得分:2
5). The passage mainly deals with _________.
A. the advantage of hybrid cultures in London
B. the composition of the population in London
C. the cultural diversity in London
D. the contribution made by the new arrivals to London
对的答案:C 满分:2 得分:2
3. The entertainment profession, or "show business", attracts many young people. Unfortunately, only very
few can hope to become famous and rich. Talent is not enough, because show business is as
competitive as any other business. Without a good manager, a performer can never hope to succeed.
Fashion is important in this business, too. The best tailor in this world will never be a success if he
makes old-fashioned clothes. In exactly the same way, a performer must change his act in order to follow
the taste of the moment. This is true for all performers: actors, dancers and perhaps most of all, for
singers.
"Pop" stands for "popular", and a pop singer has to work very hard to become popular. He must either
give the public what they already want, or he must find a new way of singing that will attract their
attention. Even when he has succeeded, and his CDs are sold everywhere, he cannot relax. Then he
must work harder than ever to stay popular, because there are always younger singers trying to become
famous and to steal some of the popularity.
The life of a successful pop singer is not at all easy. He can only relax when he is alone, because
everything he does is watched and reported in a special newspaper written for the fans. The fans are
the most important people in the world for the singer. They buy his CDs or VCDs. They go to his
concerts, and watch his MTV. And it is they who make the singer rich and famous. But they can be very
annoying too. Sometimes their enthusiasm gets so wild and mad that they do anything to attract
attention and their behavior is as uncontrolled as possible. They shout and cry very loudly during the
performance. In order t
