Part 1 Understanding of this lesson
The analysis of the teaching material:
The material is a reading passage about the city of the future. It mainly tells what will the city be like in the future and how to run a city in 2025.
Analysis of the students:
The students have the basic abilities of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, but they still need more opportunities to practice, and they also need more reading skills to help them learn a reading material.
Teaching aims:
1. Knowledge aims:
(1)To help students understand the words and some useful expressions
(2)To get the students have a better understanding of the text
2. Ability aims:
(1)To train the students’ reading ability
(2)To train the students’ ability of guess words’ meaning by read the sentence.

To let the students look forward to the future.

Part 3. Teaching procedures 45’
Lead-in and preparation for reading, Fast reading(scanning), Listening, Intensive reading, Language points , Discussion, Homework
Step 1. Lead-in and preparation for reading 5’
Show the students some beautiful pictures about our present cities. And then let them close their eyes and imagine what our future city will be like:
1. How do they go to work?
2. What building materials do they use?
3. If you are living in the future, which aspect of life do you care about most?
Methods: self-dependent learning method, Question-and-answer method, task-based language teaching
Purpose: To train the students’ self-dependent learning ability and have a brief understanding of the passage.
Step 2. Fast reading 12’
In this step, the students will have a brief understanding of the text, and they have to finish two tasks.
Task 1 General idea 2’
The students will be asked to just look at the title and the pictures of the passage, and then guess what the text is talking about. And finish exercise1 on page2.
Task 2 Main idea of each part 10’
Ask students to read the passage as quickly as they can, then ask them find out topic sentence, divide the passage into two parts, and summarize the main idea of each part.
Topic sentence: What will the city of the future look like?
Part1 (para1): What will the city of the future look like?
Part2 (para2-11): How will the students run a city in the future?
Methods: self-dependent learning method, task-based language teaching
Purpose: To train the students’ self-dependent learning ability and have a brief understanding of the passage.
Step 3. Listening(book closed)5’
Listen to the tape carefully.
Purpose: To train the students listening ability and prepare for later exercises.
Step 4.Intensive reading 10’
Read the passage carefully again ,and answer some detailed questions in excercise6 on page 4.
Then finish the exerisies3,4 and5 on page 3.
Divide the students into 2 groups, and ask them to finish the tasks by competition and cooperation. If anyone answers the question correctly, his or her group will get 1 point, and the group which gets the most points is the winner.
Methods: cooperative learning method, competition, task-based language teaching
Purpose: To train the students to grasp the key words and the detailed information, and have a better understanding of the text. Through cooperation and competitions, the students get the joy of success which makes the students become more interested in learning English, at the same time; it can help the students improve the cooperative learning ability.
Step5. Language points 8’
1…no matter where they live.
No matter+ where, when, what, how, lead an adverbial clause of concession, means wherever, whenever, whatever, however.
2…with each city having its own telesurgery outpatient clinic.
With+ noun/pronoun+ Present participial phrase is an absolute construction
3. Senior citizens and people with disabilities will be able to go anywhere in the world using high-tech cameras attached to their head.
Attached to their head: Past Participial Phrase used as attributive, equivalent to an attributive clause: which/ that are attached to their head.
4. run out/run out of: to use up or finish completely
5. rely on: to need or dependent on sb/sth
6. get rid of: remove
7. free of charge: you don’t have to pay for something
8. use up: to use all of sth so that there is none left
9. attach to:: to fasten or join one thing to another
Purpose: To train the Ss’ ability of understanding and using language, and increase their vocabulary.
Step6. Discussion 4’
Get the students to have a discussion in groups about the following questions:
Which prediction…
1. is the strangest? And why?
2. is the most useful? And why?
3. will come true first? And why?
4. will come true last? And why?
Methods: cooperative learning method, task-based language teaching
Purpose: By doing this, the students can train their thinking, speaking and communication abilities.
Step7. Homework 1’
Write yourself an email. Imagine your life in the future with the beginning sentence: Dear future me:
Purpose: To improve the ability of their writing. At the same time, train the ability of do-it-yourself and looking up the information by themselves.
