Love Him as You Were Once Loved
One day, an 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa with his highly educated son. Suddenly a crow rested on their window.
The old man asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow. ” After a few minutes, the father asked his son the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “I have just told you ‘It ’s a crow’. ” After a little while, the old father again asked his son, “What is this?” This time the son said to his father impatiently. “It ’s a crow, a crow. ” A little later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this?” The son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again? Everybody knows Amadeus Mozart, the world's most famous child piano prodigy （天才）. He was a composer, pianist, and performer （表演家）— a musician. He was born in Austria, but his real name is not popular. People know him as Amadeus, but not many people know he was born John Chrysostom Wolfgang Theophilus Mozart, and his father called him Woferl.
As a child, Mozart was very popular. That was because he was doing things unusual for little children. While everyone else was having fun playing, Mozart was already composing, performing and touring for concerts. His father was always behind him.
Here are some stories about his gift. When he heard an "oink" of a pig, he recognized （辨认）it as a G-sharp. And he was only two years old at the time!
He also took part in piano lessons at the age of three and he could already learn a minuet in thirty minutes when he was four years old! Who wouldn't be amazed?
At the age of six, while performing, he found people getting bored, so he thought of performing a trick （花招）, but nobody knew he had the keyboard covered（遮盖）with a cloth and still played the music perfectly. He was still a child having fun at that time.

In the Internet age, speed reading is a necessary and important skill. We skim over articles and e-mails to try to get key words and the main idea of the text. With so much information through our electronic devices（设备）, it would be impossible to get through everything if we read word by word, line by line. However, a new trend calls on people to enjoy reading slowly.
A recent story from The Wall Street Journal reported on a book club in Wellington, New Zealand, where members meet in a café and turn off their smart phones. They sit back in comfortable chairs and read in silence for an hour.
Unlike typical book clubs, the point of the slow reading club isn't to exchange ideas about certain books, but to get away from electronic devices and read in a quiet, relaxing environment. According to the story, the Wellington book club is just one example of a movement started by book lovers who miss the traditional way of reading.
Traditional readers, like Maura Kelly, say a regular （经常的，定期的）reading habit sharpens the mind, improves concentration, reduces stress levels and deepens the ability to understand others. Some of these benefits have been backed up by science. For example, a study of 300 elderly people published by the journal Neurology last year showed that adults who take part in activities that use their brain, such as reading, suffer less memory loss as they get older. Another study published last year in Science showed that reading novels helps people understand others ’ mental states and beliefs — a key skill in building relationships.
Yet technology has made us less careful readers. Computer and phone screens have changed our reading patterns from the top-to-bottom, left-to-right reading order we traditionally used, to a wild skimming pattern as we hunt for important words and information. Reading text online that has many links to other web pages also leads to weaker comprehension（理解）than reading plain text. The Internet may have made us stupider, says British journalist Patrick Kingsley, only half joking. Because of the Internet, he says we have become very good at collecting a wide range of factual tidbits（趣闻）, but we are also gradually forgetting how to sit back, think and connect all these facts with each other.

Small talk
Americans often have short conversations, called small talk, about unimportant things with strangers or people they know but not very well. They may have small talk at parties, while waiting in line at the store, at family events or work. It ’s a way to say hi and express friendliness.
Small talk is very useful. It can avoid uncomfortable silences and build stronger relationships. For example, when you fir st meet someone or talk to someone you don’t know well, you can break the ice by making small talk.
In 2013, researchers from the University of Essex asked some people to make small talk in a study. They found small talk can make people happier. People who talked briefly（短暂地）with a waiter in a coffee shop felt happier than those who simply went in, ordered and left.
However, some people are not good at small talk. Here are some tips to improve your small-talking ability.
Firstly, find common ground. When you have something similar with your speaking partner, that means you have something to talk about.
S econdly, ask open-ended questions. They are suitable （合适的）for small talk. For example, if you ask visitors whether they like your city, they may simply say “ Yes”. But if you ask “What do you think of our city”, they will have more freedom in how they answer.
