In the morning the weather is warm just like in spring. An hour later black clouds come and then it rains hard. The weather gets a little cold. In the late afternoon the sky will be sunny, and the sun will begin to shine. It will be summer at this time of a day. In England, people can also have summer in winter, or have winter in summer. So in winter they can swim sometimes, and in summer sometimes they should take warm clothes. When you go to England, you will see that some English people usually take an umbrella(雨伞)or a raincoat with them in a sunny morning, but you should not laugh at them. If you don’t take an umbrella or a raincoat, you will regret (后悔) later in the day. 39. Why do people in England often talk about weather? A. Because they can experience four seasons in one day. B. Shirley shouted, “Jodie’s daddy is a garbage man(垃圾清理工)!” Everybody in the class laughed out loud, except Jodie. She felt her face turn red. “Silence!” Mr. Swales said, “Being a garbage man is a difficult and useful job. We should all be grateful to Jodie’s father.” Jodie’s father came to walk her home from school as usual, but she didn’t run up to him the way she always did. When they got back home, Jodie went to her room and cried for a long time. Her father came into her room, “What happened, Jodie? Why are you so sad?” Jodie told her father what had happened and looked at him. He didn’t seem angry or hurt. “Well,” he said, “they are right. Being a garbage man is a dirty job. Tomorrow is Saturday. Come to work with me, Jodie.” The place really smelt too bad. Jodie wrinkled her nose. “Don’t worry, kid. In five minutes you won’t smell a thing.” said her father. Everybody there was working hard, and they seemed to have a good time. Jodie’s father handed her a pair of gloves and told her to get the little plastic bags and throw them into the truck. It was fun, but also hard work. Jodie’s arms soon got tired. At last, no more garbage was left and Jodie felt very happy. “Garbage is disgusting(令人厌恶的), but when we clear it away, everything’s nice and clean. You can make yourself happy only by making other happy. That’s why I like being a garbage man so much.” Jodie gave her dirty, smelly garbage man daddy a big kiss(吻). She said, “When I grow up, I will be a garbage-girl!” Now whenever someone asks Jodie what her daddy does, she says, “He’s a garbage man! Everybody makes garbage, but my daddy takes it away!” 42. Proud C The teacher stood before his class of 30 students and was going to hand out the final exam papers. “I know how hard you have all worked to get ready for this test.” he said. “And because I know you are all able to understand these questions. I am ready to offer a B to anyone who would prefer not to take the test.” A number of students jumped up to thank the teacher and left the classroom. The teacher looked at the rest students and said. “Does anyone else want to get a B? This is your last chance. ”Two more students decided to go. Seven students stayed. The teacher then handed out the papers. There were only three sentences on the paper: Congratulations! You have received an A in this class. Keep believing in yourself. I never had a teacher who gave a test like that, but I think that it is a test that any teacher could and should give. Students who do not have confidence in what they have learned are B students at most. The same is true for students in real life. The A students are those who believe in what they are doing because they have learned from both successes and failures. They have learned life’s lessons whether from school education or from events in their lives, and have become better people. Scientists say that by the age of eight, 80% of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed. You are a big kid now and you realize that you have some limits(局限). However, there is nothing you can’t do or learn to be. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰)said, “We do not conquer the mountain, but ourselves.” 45.Some students left the classroom because_____ . D.To1earn from B students. D If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language? According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase(增加) in your brain power. Researchers(研究人员) found that learning other languages changes grey matter--- the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect(影响) is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans(扫描) showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before learning a new language, the smaller the difference. "Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones has researched the link(联系) between bilingualism and math skills. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),"he said. "You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas." Therefore, the results showed that the younger one started to learn a second language, the better. Studying a language means you get an entrance(入口) to another world. 49. In the second paragraph, the writer mentions "exercise" in order to ______. A. say language is also a kind of physical work. B. say that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language C. show the importance of using the language when you learn the language D. make people understand language learning helps grey matter work well 50. The underlined word "bilingual'' probably means ______. A. a researcher on language learning B. a person who is good at learning foreign languages C. a person who can speak two languages D. an active language learner 51. This passage is mainly about ______. A. science on learning a second language B. man's ability of learning a second language C. language can help brain power D. language learning and math study 四.阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题.(每题2分,共10分) My favorite great book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.
