Every day Icheck my e-mail. Most of the time I am simply doing finger
exercises, another form of piano practices without the beautiful notes. Sometimes, however, I receive a gift, reminding me of the gifts in my life. The following passage is one of those gifts.
Peter Jones is a 92-year-old,short,calm and proud man. Every morning he is fully dressed by eight o’clock, with his hair fashionably combed and face perfectly shaved, even though he is unable to see. He would move to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.
After hours of waiting patiently in the entrance hall of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. As he moved his walker skillfully to the elevator, the nurse provided a visual description of his tiny room. “I love it,” he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new pet dog.
“Mr. Jones, you haven’t been to the room,” said the nurse.
“That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” he replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged... it’s how I arrange my mind. I have already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice: I can spend the day in bed complaining of difficulty I have with parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as I am alive, I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away.”
May each of our days continue to be a gift.

B. Each day is a gift
C. Arranging your mind every day
D. We’ re always grateful

The Panama Canal opened almost 100 years ago. It connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and reduces by about 13,000 kilometers and avoids the need for ships to sail around Cape Horn at the bottom of South America.
Built from 1904 to 1914, the canal has seen annual traffic rise from about 1,000 ships early on to 14,702 ships in 2008. In total, over 815,000 ships have passed through the canal. It has been named one of the seven mordern wonders of the world. More than forty shipa pass though the canal each day.
Now, a major expansion project will permit more ships and bigger ships to pass though the canal. Jorge Quijano, the Panama Canal’s executive vice president of engineering, says, “The predent canal has a total capacity(容量) of about 340 million tons a years. With the expansion we expect to double that.”
For years, shipbuiders limited the size of many ships so that they could pass through the Panama Canal. But now many ship companies use bigger ships to transport more goods as a way to reduce costs. Mr. Quijano says the expansion project will allow many of these large ships to use the canal.
Workers are building the new locks(船闸)alongside the old ones, which will remain in use. The existing locks are 305 meters long and 33.5 metera wide. The new ones will be 427 meters long and 55 metera wide. They will be able to handle ships with drafts(吃水量)of more than 15 meters. At presen, ships can ride only 12 meters deep in the cannal.
Engineers coud not make the new loks too big. Mr . Quijano says the plan have to balance the size of the locks with the cost for ships to ues the canal.
The cost of the expansion is estimated at more than five billion dollars. The new locks are set to open in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Panama Canal.
63. What can we learn fom the first two paragraphs?
A. The Panama Canal now sees a daily traffic of about 400 shipa.
B. The Panama Canal is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
C. The Panama Canal took a decade to be completed.
D. The Panama Canal was built close to Cape Horn.
64. After the expansion of the Panama Canal, ________ .
A. The cost of transporting goods will be relatively low
B. The charge of using the canal will be reduced
C. There will be no limitation to the size of ships though it
D. It will have a total capacity of 500 million tons a year
65. What do we know about the new locks?
A. Their length will be double that of the old ones.
B. They will be put to use in 2014.
C. Ships with drafts of 50 meters can pass thyough them.
D. They will take the palace of the old ones. To 47 her own expenses, Ivy had the dream of achieving fame and fortune.
