Here we found 38 snow, as most of it seemed 39 blown off the mountain. We could see 40 mountains in the distance because 41 were forming all round us.
About one o’clock a storm 42 suddenly. We should have noticed its coming but we were concentrating on cutting steps and before we had time to do anything, we were 43 by snow. We could not move up or down and had to wait motionless, getting colder and colder. 44 my hood (兜帽), my nose and cheeks were nearly frozen but I dared not 45 a hand out of my glove to 46 them.
After two hours of this, I realized we would have to do something to 47 being frozen to death. We stood from time to time through the snow. I had 48 the outline of a butterss (扶垛) just above us. If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise – and as a result, we are aging unnecessarily soon.
Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why quite healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a rather early age, and how the speed of getting old could be slowed down.
With a team of researchers at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages with different jobs.
Computer technology helped the researchers to get most exact measurements of the volume of the front and side part of the brain, which have something to do with intellect and feelings, and decide the human character.(The rear section of the brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual or emotional faculties or functions.)
Contraction(缩小)of front and side parts—as cells die off—was seen in some subjects in their thirties but it was still not found in some sixty and seventy-year-olds.
Matsuzawa concluded from his test that there is a simple way to prevent the contraction using the head.
The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those with least possibility, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White-collar workers doing the same work day after day in government offices are, however, as possible to have contraction brains as the farm workers, bus drivers and shop assistants.
Matsuzawa’s findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need. “The best way to maintain good blood circulation is through using the brain,” he says. “Think hard and engage in conversation. Don’t rely on pocket calculators.”
