Text 6
W: I'm having a hard time getting the information for my report.
M:That's easy. ⑥You only have to search the Internet to get what you want.
W:Really? But how?
M: ⑥So click here, then up to the top. Then open that window. Yeah, that one.
W:Er…Hum…Got it.
M:And that's it. You're done.
W: ⑦I see. That is pretty easy after all. Now I can get what I need in my room!
Text 7
M:Hi, Alma. Where have you been?
W:Oh, hi, Colin.⑧I was just at the library.I have to hand in my biology paper tomorrow.
M:Tomorrow? Oh, no! I thought it wasn't due till Monday.
W:Oh, don't worry. It is due on Monday. But I'm going away for the weekend and won't be back till Monday night.
M:Oh, where are you going?
W:California. We're having a family party. It's my grandfather's ninetieth birthday, so all the relatives are going. He planned the whole thing himself.
M:Wow! That's great. How many people will be there?
W:Around sixty. ⑨My family is big and spread out but we're pretty close. Have you started working on your biology paper?
M:Yeah. I'm busy with it now.
Text 8
W:What are you reading, Tom? You look so attentive.
M: I am reading the Entertainment Section of the newspaper. Oh, ⑩do you believe that nearly half of the section is taken up by some stars' affairs? I wasted money to buy such rubbish news.
W: In almost every form of media, a great deal of attention is paid to the personal lives of the stars. It seems that the public cannot get enough of this kind of news.
M: The practice leads people to pay more attention to these matters than they otherwise would.
W: The media should respect the privacy of every individual, including public figures. They may have chosen to be in the public eye, but that does not give the public the right to know everything about them.
M: Yes, you are right. ⑪And many stories about famous stars are untrue. They are only gossip reported to increase the sales of magazines and other media.
W:They are unfair to the famous and mislead the public.
M: ⑫I believe that the media should focus on matters other than the private lives of public figures.
W: In this way, they can appeal to a wider audience and encourage people to develop other interests.
M:I completely agree with you.
Text 9
W:Where can you look if you want to know how tall the tallest person in the world is, or who the oldest person in the world is? There is only one place where you'll find all these information, and that's in the Guinness Book of World Records. ⑬This morning we have someone from the Guinness Company that produced that famous book, Thomas Manning. Welcome to the program, Thomas!
M:Thanks, Sue. It's a pleasure to be here.
W:⑭Perhaps you could start by telling us where the idea for the book came from.
M:Well, it was first suggested in the early 1950s. ⑭Sir Hugh Beaver, the managing director of Guinness, was out shooting birds with some friends. A bird flew away so quickly that no one was able to shoot it. Sir Hugh wondered whether this bird was the fastest bird in Europe, and if it wasn't the fastest, he wondered what was.
W:So I suppose he went to the nearest library to look for the information and he couldn't find it?
M:Yes, that's exactly what happened. And this made Sir Hugh think there must be other people in the same situation who wanted this kind of information. He thought that, like himself, people would be interested in finding facts of all records to satisfy their curiosity.
W:So the idea for a book of records was born. ⑮And when did the first book come out?
M:⑮A few years later, in 1955. So, to answer your first question: the tallest person in the world is 231.7cm tall. And the oldest person is Jeanne. L. Calment, who was born in February, 1875.
W:⑯There are also some rather strange records, aren't there, Thomas?
M:Yes, that's right. Did you know, Sue, that the shortest time it is taken…

Annie Oakley was a woman who ⑰became famous for her ability to shoot a gun and hit very small objects. There are hundreds of stories about her. Many of the stories involve her adventures in the American Wild West.Others tell about her travels with native Americans. However, most of the stories are not true.⑱She did not grow up in the Wild West, nor did she fight in any battles.Annie Oakley was a performer in a traveling Wild West show. 第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)
第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。
A
Where do you find out about the world's longest walk? The world's tallest man? The world's oldest woman? You know the answer. It is the Guinness Book of World Records. How would people find unusual facts without this book?
The Guinness Book did not exist until 1951. Here is what happened. The managing director of Guinness Brewery was a curious man. He wanted answers to some questions about records. For example, he wanted to know what was the fastest flying game bird in Europe. But he was frustrated. There was no book to answer questions like this.
The director, Sir Hugh Beaver, contacted the McWhirter twins. They were brothers who owned a research agency. He asked them to put together a new reference book. It would include all kinds of unusual records. The brothers quickly accepted. The first edition of their book was published in 1955. Soon the Guinness Book of World Records was a best seller. It has sold more copies than any book except the Bible. A new edition is published every year.
Where do all the book's records come from? They are a combination of things like natural wonders, sports records, and stunts (How many people would push an egg with their noses if they weren't trying to get to the book?). But the editors try to keep things honest. All records must be verified_by an investigator. Only then are they printed.
The Guinness Book is a big business. It is published in dozens of languages. There are TV shows and museums. It is proof of how interested people are in strange pieces of information.

Eat less and exercise more—it has long been a magic word for reducing those extra weight. But now it seems that all the hard work may have been in vain.
Scientists say there are ten other reasons why people just keep getting bigger. They say that sleeping habits, central heating, medicines and even some pollutants(污染物质) can play a role in weight gain.
Traditionally, people have focused on diet and exercise to solve the problem. However, the scientists from top U.S. and Canadian universities say that other things must be considered.
Lack of sleep could be partly the reason. In recent years, the average night's sleep has dropped from nine hours to just seven.Sleep shortage changes levels of the hormones that control food intake and body fat and increase hunger and appetite.
If it is too hot or too cold, we burn calories to cool down or heat up.But if the temperature is just right, the calories may be turned into body fat instead.
Those who take medicine to control their blood pressure can often put on weight.Similarly, studies have shown that going on the pill can add to a woman's weight.
Mother nature may also be the reason, with our body shape being partly inherited(遗传的). The overweight are also more likely to settle with partners of a similar size. And their children are more likely to be obese(肥胖的).
And the use of pollutants is on the rise, say the researchers. The manmade chemicals in pesticides(杀虫剂) and plastics can lead to weight gain.
Your mother's age and your weight at birth are also important, with older woman more likely to have obese children and underweight babies having a bigger chance of being obese in later life.
We also tend to put on weight as we get older. Finally, giving up smoking can also help pile on the pounds.
The scientists from Yale, Cornell and Johns Hopkins said there was some evidence supporting poor diet and lack of exercise as the main causes of obesity.
