Teaching procedures and ways 教学过程与方式 Step I Revision and lead-in Ask Ss to think of people who need help and write some ideas. Then discuss with their partners. T: Oh, dear boys and girls, what do you think of your life? Do you feel happy? Ss: Yes, of course. T: What can you do in your everyday life? S1: We can study. S2: We can have delicious food. S3: Our home is very warm and comfortable. S4: After class, we can do many things in our free time. T: Yes, you are right. But not all people in the world live a happy life. There are some people need help. Who are they? Ss: Disabled people, old people, people with AIDS, poor people ... T: If some of these people are around you, what can you do to help them? Discuss with your partners and fill in the chart on page 32. After students complete the chart. T: Now tell me your ideas using “We can ...” Sample answers: We can read newspapers for blind people. We can give money to poor people. We can talk with old people. We can ... Step II While you read Help students learn how to understand the meaning of a word from the context. First ask a student to read the Reading strategy on page 32. Then give them some instructions on how to understand new words in a text. T: While we are reading a text, first we just read for the main idea. And then read it again for some detail information. If there are some words in the text that you don’t know, what will you do? … Yes, use the context. Context means “the words that come just before and after a word or sentence”. It helps you understand the meaning of the word. Are you clear? Let students read the text for general idea. Then let them go through the words in the box, read the text again detail by detail and put the words into the correct space. T: The words in the box are missing from the reading. Put them in their correct places according to the context. After you finish, read the sentences and see if they make sense. Step III After you read Activities 3a and 3b check students’ understanding of some details. In 3a, students will be asked to find out some information about Yang Lei’s students on hometown, food, teachers, time to get up and time to finish studying. Then they will be asked to write down their own information on these aspects. T: The text describes Yang Lei’s experience in a mountain village. It also descries the life of students there. Look at the chart in 3a. Can you use information from the text to fill in the chart about Yang Lei’s students? Write down key words, not sentences. After students finish, check the answers. Ask them to complete the information under “you”, saying what is true for their own lives. Then have students discuss their answers with their partners and find out the similarities and differences. Then let students work in pairs, ask and answer the questions in 3b. Sample answers: 1. Her mother thought it was a good idea. She said young people today need to experience different things. 2. They love having the volunteer teachers and they say they are like big brothers or sisters. 3. Yang Lei said she could open up her students’ eyes to the outside world and give them a good start in life. 4. Yang Lei enjoyed her time as a volunteer very much. T: What do you think of volunteer teachers? Will you volunteer to teach in a poor mountain village when you grow up? (...) How many kinds of volunteer work do you know? Language tips: danger n. 危险in danger 处于危险状态 out of danger 脱离危险 People in the village are all in danger because the flood is coming. The patient is now out of danger. Volunteer n. someone who does a job willingly without being paid志愿者 Yang Lei has been a volunteer in this small village many years. v. volunteer to do something志愿做... Helen volunteered to help the old man find his home. decision n. (decide, v.) 决定 I will think about it. It is a big decision. What’s your decision on this matter? make decision 做决定 As the monitor, you need to make right decision. care for take care of 关心、照顾 care for sb./sth. The nurse cared for him while he was sick. Mother always asks me to care for the environment. Step V Go for it Have a class discussion about the work each organization does. Help students learn something about volunteer work. Then ask some students to say which organization they would like to work for and why. T: Besides volunteer work as teachers in mountain villages, there are many other volunteer work in the world. Can you name some? (...) Here are some names of volunteer groups in the chart. They help people and animals all around the world. Have you heard of them? Read the chart carefully and learn what each group does. After reading. T: Since there are so many organizations, which one would you like to work for? S1: Greenpeace. T: Why?
